Please ignore my post #233. This discussion has gotten sufficiently muddled for me to have become confused by it.

Maybe they can call it "Craigslist Of The Air".
Who in the world would not use Craigslist but, instead, do a listing on a little AM that requires listeners to tune in at a specific time of the day and wait through a bunch of baby cribs for sale to hear about the starter for the '57 Chevy they want to buy?

Ain't no Internet on the farm.? Tradio shows still air all over the country. Nostalgia? 1972 Chevy Impala for sale. No engine or wheels, but only $50...😑
You obviously have not seen the John Deere tractors and machines with on-board internet and all the fancy stuff.

Yes, there are some trade-it shows left. About two decades back, I did it for an hour on a 50 kw Los Angeles station. But we called it “Chistes y Chacharas” which means “Junk and a Joke” where a listener had tell a joke to be allowed to sell or buy something. People listened for the terrible jokes, and that hour was in the. Top 10 in the LA market.

I had the "privilege" of hosting one of those shows for a bit. I used to have a buzzer in case someone called and offered a forbidden item and, if someone called and said, "I have this item in perfect condition," I'd respond with something like, "Yeah, sure, you do. How much do you want for that piece of junk?"

Don't know how the numbers did during that run, but, with two months of me leaving, the long running "Trading Post" program was canceled. I was working part-time for the competition when the Trading Post was canceled and suggested they bring it back on their talk station. I even offered to host it at first, but they passed on the idea.

Tradio is code word for “ we need to get revenue since we can’t sell spots, and we can put junk on the air and try to make $3 that way”

Also known as Swap Shop.

"Tradio" (or as John Gallagher mentions, "Swap Shop") or "Trading Post" or some other name was not usually a paid service. In other words, folks just called in to buy and sell. If the host was personable enough, he or she did a bit of chatter along with selling the old washing machine.

I'm sure there were some stations that sold the classified ads, but I never heard of one.

Anything is possible, of course.

In one of my markets a station did very well selling "Saint Day" greetings, personal messages to people with no phone service and birth and death notices and the like. They did not even try to sell to businesses or agencies, and showed up in the top 10 in the lower income group.

K-ADS/103.5 in Los Angeles. A 1965 idea from Gordon McLendon that failed.

Finally started in 1967 after numerous FCC hearings on giving McLendon a waiver.

By September he had thrown in the towel and gone Beautiful Music as KOST, moving those calls from his Houston FM. In March 1968, he got a waiver to exclude news from 103.5's programming.

Of course, we know nothing ever became of KOST after that, right? 😅

Granted it's more birthdays and anniversaries in hopes of being the winner but we do have buy sell and trade (since 1973) in small market Texas. We have about 1,200 that watch the video on Facebook (Hometown Radio KGAF | Gainesville TX) but best of all, instead of $9 a spot, our rate is $23 and we are sold out. Coming out of Houston after over 25 years it seemed a bit hokey but I'm always amazed how many listen. And yes, there's all the groups that let you sell your items on Facebook and such but this area uses radio too. Granted, we might be the last station where this happens but it's still working for us.

There's a station I like to stream now and then that always promoting and giving out the phone number for their 'Weather Phone'.. yep, picking up the phone and dialing in for a recorded weather forecast. And its actually sponsored! It's WJEJ in Hagerstown, MD. I would love to know how many people actually call it!! They also do a half hour show called 'The Phone Party'. Any one can call in and talk about ANYTHiNG under the sun. A regular caller is a 101 year old war veteran.

I do a kick out of the whole retro time warp this station is in, whenever I listen.

Tradio (or whatever name you give it), local high school sports, farm reports, obituaries, and a host of other "hokey" format elements that would never fly in the city work surprisingly well at small market stations. As far as internet coverage is concerned, it's really not great in many rural areas. Streaming via cell phone is very limited, and people aren't going to pony up the money for Starlink or other satellite services that are inherently slow and expensive. Tractors do use GPS, not so much Wi-Fi out in the field. If they do use a cell connection, it's for data only and is a minor impact on your cell bill. Tether a computer, and the price goes up in a hurry, often for a limited connection anyway.
