Well, let's see how much credit I have built up here over 20+ years.

Seriously, Lance? The entire damn thread has been about broadcast media coverage of what's going on in Los Angeles, including the televised shooting (with a less-lethal round) of a television journalist while on live TV.

SRG said something dumb (sorry, SRG, but honest to God, when you "don't know" you don't say "maybe", you go with the facts), CT made a dopey joke and K.M. doubled down on it.

And while I think SRG's post was off-target, it was at least on-topic. The only two posts that didn't have to do with broadcasting were the last two, which could easily have been dumped and a verbal warning, if necessary, issued.

Yeah, you're within your power to close the thread as the owner of the board. But "What about this thread has to do with broadcasting?"

C'mon.

I could see parts of that thread that could be leaning in a political direction, but the comment made by the Chief Op could've been worded different, like "This thread is derailing, I will close it now" or something, which I think will happen to this thread. Maybe he was having a bad day, but the current political climate is putting many on edge.

True and always the owner has the final say where things go here.

He does, but this creates the risk of regular participants saying "f--- it" and leaving. I completely agree with what Mike said.

Including that Lance could have deleted my bad joke post that ended the thread and I wouldn't have complained.

Moved this thread to the relevant board...

Unfortunately you missed quite a few of the comments in that thread I had to delete for attacking others for their political opinions and the multiple threads that have been derailed lately as I mentioned here this morning: https://radiodiscussions.com/threads/personal-politics.776766/#post-6819107

It may have started broadcasting related but like others it has become derailed. Last week I had two of the other admins get into it and one quitting the site.

I know everything is politically charged right now, but political flamewars lead to nothing being solved here and there are thousands of places on the internet to discuss personal political opinions. All I want is this site to stick to how everything affects broadcasting.

I've had about 10 emails today from readers and posters fed up because of the political posts. Damned when you do, damned when you don't. We're here to discuss broadcasting. There's a way to discuss these very important topics while keeping them focused on how they affect broadcasting.

Yes, I should have. But I've done that every other time and nothing changes and am getting overwhelmed having to babysit a handful of adults ruining the enjoyment for hundreds of others.

While trying to self manage a news publication, handle multiple consulting clients, and do advertising sales for said businesses means I'm not sitting here 24/7 watching every post. We shouldn't need to babysit people who cannot discuss things without making political attacks.

For most of the past year it has been a joy to manage the site. Over the past few weeks that has changed and it has become overwhelming. The amount of content I've had to manage reports on and emails and messages from pissed off readers and posters from the political attacks has been too much.

I understand that everything is politically charged right now. But there should be islands to escape from and share the passions of why we're all here regardless of political belief. That was the maybe too idealistic goal for the site.

The final line of post #47 of the now-closed thread:

This isn't about party or personal politics. This is about the rule of law and the Constitution.

Well, that's not terribly ****ing relevant for a story about broadcast media coverage of the biggest story in America---which just happens to be in Los Angeles--- now, is it?

Not relevant for the original thread, but now we are discussing Lance's decision to close that thread, in a thread separate from the original.

Ask The Moderators is about as relevant a place for this discussion as I can think of.

I agree. There are other forums on the web that deal with the political stuff. We need to be able to hop over here and talk radio or television and stuff and not deal with that stuff.

I help on another forum and the political stuff was getting out of hand too, that the admin posted a link to a board he found on the net for those to talk politics.

One more time:

It is also about the role of the First Amendment and broadcasting in a free society.

The vast majority of professionals on this board are qualified and capable of rational discussion about it.

If the board doesn’t want to host that sort of conversation about an issue central to broadcasting’s reason for existing and its future, that’s its choice.

But the subtext to that decision is that broadcast journalists are getting hurt by people sworn to protect them, and RadioDiscussions doesn’t respect those broadcasters and what they do enough to discuss it responsibly.

Personally, I think there are enough places for dopey repetitive posts about oldies stations not playing enough records or the overnight jock on W-who cares in 1968, but, sure.

And to think that less than a year ago, Lance was having to chase down people who posted fantasy scenarios all over the place ...

Those weren’t the days.

I hope this board keeps going.

Hey Lance, can we have more game threads, please? It would be fun and you probably wouldn’t have to moderate those threads.

On a board I used to read, there was a 100+ page thread of a game where someone makes up a sentence, writes it in a spoiler tag & then someone else draws it badly. The next person makes up a sentence based only on the previous drawing and so on. The moderator never had to moderate it because everyone was having fun and nobody was getting upset. Plus the bad drawings were hilarious.

True I saw that with when my thread about Terry Moran which was suspended at the time it was made and was trying to position this as more of how is Disney doing this and what role FCC and Disney has on those decisions. Yes it became more obvious where its going once Terry Moran was terminated from ABC News.

I think my drawings would either give Lance more white hair or wreck the server! lol:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
