latest Greenville/Spartanburg ratinbgs

  • WYRD-FM is down slightly, but still a BIG powerhouse of crazy talk.
  • But I also see that SC Public Radio is up again, continuing a nice trend. It could be: 1) people are getting tired of the same old conservative BS on WORD and/or 2) with so much talk about the administration planning (and then carrying out) cuts to NPR/PBS, that it sparked some renewed interest in public radio.
  • Nice to see B93.7 up slightly and beating Hot for a change. I haven't been listening. Have they made any musical changes?
  • Has anyone been listening to Magic on WFBC-HD4 (or WYRD-HD2?) It actually sounds pretty good and near zero commercials, which is great! Much hipper than Magic ever was. But I find it odd that there are zero liners between songs. ??? Only the top of the hour ID. It's almost annoying. But, that HD station on a few minor translators, is actually climbing! 0.3, but still, it's showing.

BTW, in nearby Asheville, the public radio station there, WCQS is owning that town. While they pretty much always did well, they are the clear #1 and that could relate to my observation that there is a renewed interest in NPR. Even WNCW, which is rather bizarre in their music at times, has also had a pretty huge increase. Could it be their relation to NPR? (They run Morning Edition IIRC)

It hasn’t updated on RadioInsight, but looking at the numbers on the “other” site, it looks like pretty much everyone was up except for WYRD’s drop and a smallish drop at WJMZ.

I honestly can’t stand WFBC to listen, but it seems like some CHR’s are trending upward a bit. The morning and afternoon shows on there are just unbearable to me.

WYRD may finally be cooling off or the listeners are getting tired of crazy Tara and Frady along with goofball Gallagher.

I can’t recall when WEPR has been in the 3’s. I still contend it would do better with a full time news/talk format heard on many other SCPR stations.

X-98.5 seems to be holding steady in a higher range than they were last year. Is Star 99.5 a dud? That translator has gotten at least a 1 share before so there’s potential there as far as audience if they want to hear AC.

Lots of straggling religious stations at the bottom. 91.9 WHRT aka “Classic His Radio” is one of the corniest radio stations I’ve ever heard as far as the imaging goes. Looks like a few more people are listening to Air1 on 95.5 than 103.3.

I have to admit, those numbers for WFBC-HD4 (Magic) are indeed impressive considering it’s on those two translators, the 101.5 one is city grade across Anderson. Just now saw what you were talking about on the RadioInsight numbers. They finally fixed the sound quality, I enjoyed listening to it when I was over there several weeks ago.

The whole downfall of Magic is just a shame. I miss it. Goes to show there’s still an audience for it in its leftover state. I’m sure there were reasons we’ll never know, but I wish WORD had gone to 93.3 and Magic had been left at 98.9. If Audacy hadn’t been forced to sell 106.3, I think Magic would have continued to catch on there along with the 95.1 and 101.5 translators for Pickens/Anderson/Oconee counties. Or The Planet at 106.3.

I listen to Magic in the car ALL the time on WYRD's HD-2. (It sounds a little better than WFBC's HD-4.) Almost no commercials (other than some kind of Humane Society thing and Big Dave Eats... maybe once an hour, which I actually appreciate. Big Dave has given me a few restaurant ideas.) The music has been great, too, so either Supa Dave or corporate (whomever is programming it these days) is really hipping it up.

Although iHeart did the same, WCQS became the only information source for some people when they were without TV, Internet or cell phones after Helene.

Not going to happen. That ship sailed long, long ago, and HISRadio isn’t about to give up a cheap signal.

Actually; 91.9/89.7 are technically oldies — CCM oldies 🤣
I don't know what those sound like, but I'm sure secular rock and roll oldies are much better. When I go to the beach I listen to one of the stations in the network the 91.9 frequency used to belong to. I lose the signal when I get close to the beach because of another station on the next frequency.

91.9 WHRT in Cokesbury was Oldies as WKRI many years ago, With Programming From Richburg's WRBK.

Now There's a WUBK on 88.1 Nearby in Enoree - Featuring a Full Simulcast of WRBK -
Though it's Not Quite As Powerful As 91.9 ...
They Extend WRBK Westard into Upstate SC
With Decent Coverage From Woodruff to Laurens and Gray Court, and a Fringe Signal Reaching Fountain Inn.

The Station Recently Upgraded, Moving To A Much Taller Tower - But With Only 97 Watts ... (?) .. It Doesn't Reach As Far As It Could. Still No Stream Available.

Here's Some Recent Pix of the New WUBK Site.

I’m surprised His hasn’t tried to expand that format to their other signals. It’s only an Upstate weak signal and online while Z and Praise are region-wide on HD

Latest ratings show a continue slide by WYRD-FM. (Maybe people are getting tired of their slant?)
I'm surprised just how much Planet has been climbing. Why all of a sudden?
Lake continues a slow climb. (I don't listen. Do they have any "real" people on the air yet or is it still just canned liners?)
I get sad every time I see a big signal station like 94.5 getting such tiny numbers. But with HIS radio so entrenched in this market, I can totally understand why. (Plus, most "Christian/religious" stations don't worry about ratings.) But a translator, The Block, gets almost the same overall numbers. Sad.
And as I've said before, I'd love to see the breakout for WEPR. Is it classical or News/Talk blocks that are pulling in the ratings?

WMYI is all canned/automated. They’ve definitely put WROQ in check as we don’t see them hitting some of the highs they used to since a lot of times 102.5 sounds like what could pass as a classic rock station for long sets vs. its sister station WLKO in Charlotte which is more pop leaning.

I was wondering the same thing about WEPR. I can’t see people all of a sudden wanting to hear classical. I’d argue I’ve never seen them do this well - the SCPR stations in Columbia and Charleston haven’t done as well, which is a bit of a reversal for sure.

Re: 94.5 - the sad thing is, more or less, that poor signal has always been a waste since it signed on. WMUU was “unique” for sure, but it was still a waste of a signal that could have been a major commercial player. I didn’t care for WGTK, but that seemed to be the most successful format that was ever on there. K-LOVE will never displace the HIS Radio empire.

I’m sure Tara will blame “signal issues” on 98.9’s downward trend. 🤣

Also - it’s interesting to see X-98.5 holding at that .9 share. They were much lower for most of last year but seem to be hanging on to the slightly higher listenership. Star 99.5 seems to be languishing despite no AC or adult pop station in the market. I had to get a magnifying glass to see The Fan’s 0.1 share. 🤣 Magic’s remnants are even beating it - I know Audacy won’t do it, since Fan probably sells well with WORD, Planet, and ROQ, but they could probably do decently bringing Magic back on 97.1/97.7 along with the 101.5 and 95.1 translators to the west. Similar setup to The Block.

iHeart is doing it right on Lake, then. Stealing from WROQ is the right thing to do. Although I hate canned radio with no live jocks, (even if from out of the market ) there are zero expenses. I'm actually surprised that they didn't try to go more AC with Magic gone -- but hey, it's working! BTW, I've said it before on this board, Magic, on two of the HD channels, has never had a better music mix!

I want to think that people are getting tired of being hit over the head with national political talk, so WORD is slipping and some are turning to NPR. At least in drive times, they are straight down the middle news. I highly doubt in a market this size (in terms of placement of diaries,) the outlying signal problems can really make that much of a difference.

Would love to see a bunch of changes, seems more like a wish than future expectations.

Block to 93.3
Planet to 101.1
Magic to 97.1/7
Fan to Bye Bye
WROO to Bye Felicia
WYRD to WORD (AM)

😂
This Market has become Terrible lately,
like its all on a downhill trend / spiral (stale).

What would be the point in moving The Planet to another full power signal?

Also, where would WROQ go?

Seems like moving The Planet to the WROO frequency would be best. Asheville has WQNQ.

I would never call NPR middle of the road and while WYRD is right wing at least they honest. Mainstream never admits they are biased but Im sure Tara and Charlie would admit they are.

Long Shot, but I think they should commit to bring Magic (or something like it or better) back. The fact that they've kept its remants on a translator and HD is alarming, while None of Audacy's music stations are beating The Lake.

Unless they ever pull off something spectacular, like Combine The Planet and Rock 101 into one single station, I think we're stuck with these options.

Different Yet Similar Format with WROQ w/ some crossover hits, WMYI has somewhat of a classic rock lean, but that means nothing for 80/90s/00s hits anywhere ... (not counting weak Star).

Vice Versa for iShart ... 😜 WMYI gets away with its format because no one else challages it directly so they can be the cookie cutter they wanna be with very little effort. ... But Why not combine the rock operations onto 104.9 Upstate to complement 105.1 in Asheville
