Best/Worst/Most Interesting TV Station Logos

Here is an interesting one. Whenever we talk about 20th Century Fox owning local TV stations we think about the 1985-1986 deal with Metromedia selling their stations to Fox such as when KTTV Los Angeles and WNYW New York as the date Fox started owning local TV Stations. Or the 1994-1995 deal when New World Communications had an affiliation and convert into Fox Owned stations deal that included WAGA Atlanta, KTBC Austin, KDFW Dallas, WJBK Detroita and KSAZ Phoenix. Or the 2018-2019 deal when Fox Inc sold the now 20th Century Studios label to Disney and we think of 20th Century Studios as having ties to ABC owned stations like KABC-TV Los Angeles and KGO San Francisco plus in the 2018-2019 deal Fox kept KTTV and KTVU in terms of them having separate ownership from their former division.

Here is one of the earliest examples of Fox buying local TV stations as in they owned KMSP as far back as the the late 1950/early 1960's time frame.


Since 2002 KMSP-TV is owned by Fox Inc this time as a Fox O&O in Minneapolis.

Yes this was before Fox merged with 20th Century Pictures in 1935. It was part of the Fox Movietone news at that time. I didn't realize that the movetone news name ended in 1986 in the UK and Fox Movietone News ended in 1963 in the United States.
 
Was KTVK in Phoenix a bit miffed that it had lost its ABC affiliation in the mid-'90s affiliation reshuffle? Was the newly independent hungry for some payback? Well, this 1996 promo had the KTVK logo crushing a "NETWORK" sign:



 
It could well be that strong, news-heavy independents are going to become a thing. They can snag all sorts of syndicated stuff to fill out their schedules, and the only thing they don't have, pretty much, is two or three hours of network programming in prime time that fewer and fewer people are watching anyway. They'd rather watch streaming and on-demand stuff.

It's a "video killed the radio star" situation.

However Fox ordered their O&O’s and affiliates to include their OTA numbers or city because of the Cable Network Fox News Channel premiered in 1996. KTTV is one of the stations that had to rebrand their newscasts as Fox 11 News for the Los Angeles area. There are other entities within Fox that also get recognized as Fox News to the public besides the one Fox Nation viewers watch. There’s Live Now on Fox and Local Fox O&O’s.

The plain, channel-less Fox News branding did survive that mandate on O&O WFLD in Chicago, however (perhaps because most cable systems placed WFLD on a channel lower than 32, the station's fairly high UHF allocation):

 
But perhaps as a nod to the wishes of the corporate office, the logos and other visual references referred to Fox Chicago.

This is in contrast to the early to mid-1990s, when Fox News was used everywhere on WFLD:

It would be nice to have a web page with all of these ads on it, rather than having to sit through a 16-minute video (I just hopscotched around to get a sampling).

Peter Stoner (unfortunate name) of WLEX Lexington KY has a very severe look on his face in that ad at 15:20. I remember him. (And John Evenson of WTVQ in the same city was the voice of doom if ever there were such a thing.)
 

Here is Stu Tracy in an ad that aired at KPHO-TV in the 1980’s.



Here is a clip at the 1 minute mark circa mid-1990’s KPWB Sacramento (then WB affiliate at the time of the clip/ now Independent and secondary CBS affiliate) Paramount owned KMAX Sacramento. Here is a rare clip where Ernie Anderson does voiceovers outside of ABC and their affiliates as in this clip.

WGAL 8 "Your Place" Promo (1989)

Here are some interesting ones where 4 TV stations happened to use the "Welcome to Your Place" promo jingle from the late 1980's to early 1990's. The Earliest example of this jingle was used WKBD Detroit in 1988, and was later used at WGAL 1989, KDFW 1990 and KOFY-TV 20 from the early 1990's up to the time KOFY became a WB affiliate in the mid-1990's.
