Las Vegas KMZQ 670 general discussion

Definitely not. I found a working stream and it's playing music.

According to Radio Locator it's been KEMP since 8/19/2014. It was KMZQ in 2005

what stream? The ones i find, are clearly for KVGQ... i somehow doubt a stand alone FM thats simulcasted another station had its own stream.

Plus, a stream proves nothing.. it could be automation just chugging along somewhere

I was in Payson just two weeks ago and KEMP 99.3 is definitely a Conservative Talk format, and simulcasting KMZQ 670. I was in Payson last November and heard the same thing on 99.3. The information that's available, including the Wikipedia article, is wrong. The interference I get over K257CD in parts of the Phoenix Metro is spoken word.

106.9 Da Bomb - KEMP

I couldn't find them on Tunin

You would have to be crazy to program a hip hop format in a town with a population of about 16,000. That is 92.5% white (Caucasian), and a median age of 57.1 years old. This Kemp is a lawyer, so he wouldn't be stupid enough to program hip hop in Payson.

Here comes another "stop using Radio Locator" response, everybody.

More complete call letter history, from @Michi's FCCdata.org:
KSXX - 05/02/2005 (CDBS)
KMZQ - 08/31/2005 (CDBS)
KMZQ-FM - 07/30/2008 (CDBS)
KEMP - 08/19/2014 (CDBS)
KEMP - 05/02/2005 (LMS)

The call letter changes may not necessarily reflect any format changes I think the KEMP-FM calls are more appropriate for a Talk format that KMZQ, which suggests 'music'. But then, why not change the calls of AM 670 over to KEMP, and move the KMZQ calls to 106.9 FM for the hip hop format

Now, I'm probably just overthinking something the owner isn't.

One more question. Why even have a standalone FM in a small town that is just simulcasting an FM from a big city, with no separate spot load?

Technically, that's a satellite station, and is allowed under whatever logic the owner wants to justify it.

I think Radio Locator is best when you want to lookup all the stations that are heard in certain locations. I like how you can adjust the distance mileage to include fringe and/or distant stations I also find it very accurate most times as far as technical and format info. Since, I don't know how to generate a coverage map on Rabbit Ears or Longley Rice, I have to rely on RL's coverage maps.

Just another thought about Payson,. It is a popular summer getaway locale with summer homes/cabins in a scenic locale on the Mongolian Rim. Maybe it's the owners vacation station for him to listen to when out of town.

You can do something similar at @Michi's site. Look up a community in the upper taskbar and you get a list of all presumed receivable FMs and AMs in the daytime, plus probable distant skywave AMs and all the TVs. All on one page.

Here's the one for Las Vegas NV:

People would listen to the old KDWN from the plaza hotel, station located there, across the west, they would go to Vegas, go to the Plaza and the wrestling at the showboat casino. Payson, nice place to live, less heat than Phoenix, a little ice in winter, There are bus bench ads in Vegas that say morning show on KVEG fm is number one..KEMP is apparently good attorney and business man? What ads do they run on the Payson station? Local, Vegas?

What can a station do to improve a signal without reporting to the FCC? KMZQ is definitely better of late. Noisy as all get out at night but at least intelligable. I checked FCCdata and no changes were recorded.

LOL really?

Yeah, a station can just install a 50kw transmitter, crank it to 50kw.. but were only licensed for 25kw. I mean, they dont HAVE to tell the FCC they did that but when they get found out, theyll get in trouble.

Could be operating at lower power due to an unreproted technical issue../ you dont have to notify the FCC for 10 days..... or just atmospherics.

What surprises me is that the OP is posting under his ham radio calls, so I would presume he knows the FCC wouldn't stand for that.

So why ask?

Thank you. I hadn't been up to Payson since 2002 and all I could find on the Internet until today's comment from you said the station, as unlikely as it seems, was simulcasting KVGQ-FM.

I thought it might be atmospheric and gave it a few days. Especially because the signal improved during the solar flare and then went back down but this time it's stayed fairly steady.
