Losing An Affiliate for America's Best Music

Say goodbye to another America's Best Music affiliate. Cumulus says it will shut down 1280 WNAM in the Appleton Wisconsin market at midnight New Year's Eve. Cumulus has been taking several of the company's AM stations silent. In recent months, it pulled the plug on 560 in San Francisco (formerly KSFO) and 1070 WAPI in Birmingham, even though both stations had good signals.

If you're a fan of America's Best Music, this is the only full-time affiliate that's also on the iHeartRadio app. There is a station in Arkansas that's an affiliate and on the iHeart app, KVRE 92.9 in Hot Springs Village. But the station is programmed locally in the daytime. You'll only hear the America's Best Music programming nights and weekends.

There are other stations that stream ABM. One is KHAR Anchorage. That station takes the service 24/7 and doesn't even carry hourly newscasts. But you must stream it from its website. It's not on the iHeart app.

KHAR is available to stream on the following apps

TuneIn (you can search KHAR) but it is using the old CBS Sports logo but is confirmed streaming
Audacy - listed as Gold Rush Radio (can search KHAR)
iHeartRadio - listed as Gold Rush Radio (can search KHAR)
RadioBox - you have to search Gold Rush Radio, not KHAR

Those are the ones I found - so you are good. Listen away. I will also miss WNAM. I had a preset on iHeart, TuneIn and RadioBox for it.

Please read my comment in the thread about WNAM going silent.

I have a sinking feeling this is leading to the end of the syndicated Westwood One format itself.

Cumulus’ WXKR-HD2 “Glass FM” in Toledo flipped to the format earlier this year following the end of Rock 2.0. It’s Cumulus’ last station with the format, and it does stream.

Cumulus ran the WW1 standards on only a few stations since taking over WW1. Cumulus owned and ran an Adult Standards format on KTUC Tucson, and from 2012 until a couple of years ago did it in-house instead of using their own syndicated Standards. It was a topic of discussion here over the years as to why.

I don't know how many affiliates are left, or how much longer they will keep it going. But they make adjustments with the playlist, like dropping anything from the 50's, much less from the 60's. The music is now focused mostly on the 70's.

Well, I'm sure you can see why I think it's at least a possibility. It has been a year of almost constant downsizing at Cumulus this year, what with cancelling some of their syndicated formats, taking numerous AMs silent, and the announcement just a couple of days ago that they are selling the Nashville headquarters building.

Apparently they ended the third quarter with a loss twice that for the same quarter last year (with eight digits in front of the decimal point). I don't think anything is off the table there anymore.

Unfortunately, I do too. And it upsets me since it was always kind of a unique format. I'm 56 years old now, but back in the 80s I worked for KDON-AM and FM in Salinas. While I ultimately became a jock on the FM one of my first jobs there in my teens was working the AM automation system, which the first time around as a standards station ran the Toby Arnold "Unforgettable" standards format which was all done on reels and cart carousels. That was more traditional "standards." A few years and a few formats later, KDON-AM came back to standards, using Stardust, which was live via satellite. This ultimately became "Timeless," which shut down in 2010 I think. I did like Stardust better, because it mixed Soft AC songs that I actually knew (because my mother loved that music) with the more popular standards that made for a nice mix, along with very relaxed personalities (I remember Eddie Hubbard, Joe Lacina because we had to change the ID carts to match the schedule on the wall.)

Today, when I drive up to see my Dad (Mom lives with my sister in Clovis now after an accident last year) in Carmel, when I drive on US 101 I always seek out K-Jewel (AM 1400 and a translator at 106.5 in San Luis Obispo) when I get near Paso Robles and listen as far as I can down to Santa Barbara before I lose the signal (it's only 1,000 watts). They are also an affiliate of ABM but they don't stream. I have picked them up through all of the muck at night from San Diego, but it's barely listenable with all of the other stations on 1400. They don't play so many standards these days, although I think some still sneak in when they need to play filler music. Most of it is Soft AC from the late 60s through the 80s with the core being 70s and perhaps early 80s. I know that the audience is aging out and passing on, so I can see the end of this format too. To my knowledge there are only two national formats that play this type of music: America's Best Music and an old standby that still continues today, Music of Your Life. MOYL plays more standards, but when I've listened to it, it seems to be more unknown and jazz tracks, along with new versions of the standards. I think they do still have personalities though. ABM dropped personalities a number of years ago, and I feel that's a shame. Someone on this board put up some old links and there are some YouTube videos that feature the personality format and it was nice and relaxed, like having a friend along for the drive. They don't do that anymore. Just tunes and liners. I don't even think they do jingles anymore.

There are a handful of standalone stations that program their own standards format, but I really liked the ABM format because I always felt it was a good mix of songs that played well together, even today with less actual standards. But if Westwood One or Cumulus have been eliminating formats, I do see this one coming to an end soon. It's too bad. It kind of connected me to my grandparents' generation. In fact, I remember my grandmother visiting us in Monterey in the 80s and when I played KDON-AM for her, she really loved the format. But she's been gone for 28 years now. My last living grandparent has been gone for almost 16 years now. This format was for them. I don't see too many people listening to it today. Does Arthur Liu's Multicultural stations still use MOYL in overnights? We may be saying RIP to this format soon enough since many of its audience are RIP.

I’ve never heard announcers on the MOYL affiliate I listen to, 105.1 HD2 in KC. They do have promos from Ray Charles and others, though. There are a few sung jingles too.

This and that about the topic:

Since it was announced it's going silent, WNAM has been airing classic liners when returning from break, specifically WW1 branding for ABM from the late 2000s and the 1990s Great Songs Great Memories jingles. Nice to hear them all again. I'm capturing some airchecks of the music at Christmas and will record some more when the usual playlist returns for a few more days on the 26th.

Here is a promo captured earlier today (12/23) announcing the station is going off the air. (It's cut off right at the end by the switch to network ads, somewhat fittingly.) I'm somewhat impressed Cumulus is marking the occasion reverently and not just pulling the plug at midnight on the 31st.

I've shared this before, but here is a reconstructed playlist for America's Best Music I built in iTunes. (As mentioned here, it leans heavily in 70s/80s music now. As someone in his early 50s, it's getting to be I'm the prime audience for this format -- regardless of its own life expectancy!) This list is pretty current and was built throughout 2025, but I by no means present it as being complete.

Powers mentioned KKJL in San Luis Obispo above. I had no idea it was still on the air! It streamed in the late 00s and early 10s and I was a daily listener. I thought the station was sold and changed formats after the retirement/death of longtime owner Guy Hackman. Some airchecks for it during this period (and many other goodies) can be found here.

Finally, I know this has been shared plenty of times, but it's still fun to revisit. Here's a clip (and there are a few others on these same channel) of longtime format personality Mark Haden as they transitioned to ENCO computer automation. I presume this is early 2000s, and it's interesting the at the music mix is still very similar to this. This channel also has some original Transtar demos and other great stuff.

Happy holidays to all.

The dumped all the announcers about 10 years ago.

Even if that's true, people on this site have said the format has some harder rock too.

Yeah, I remember ten years ago my ABM affiliate switched to oldies and when I complained on the phone the man who ran the station said, "They fired all those guys." I think he was under the impression that when they did that, the format was gone too.

Now that station has switched from Good Time Oldies, which had a lot of good songs in addition to what ABM did, to something that sounded like AC sounded back in the late 80s. Too many bad songs.

Thanks for doing that @publisher ! If you could share those at some point I would be grateful. I happened to listen on the day they announced it and made plans to start recording tonight but their stream is down. I get a preroll ad and then nothing, Hope it comes back before Christmas is over. Happy Holidays to you as well!

I was listening earlier in the day and the stream was running fine but a couple of hours ago I got the preroll add and then silence. I am wondering if they were airing a sports game tonight that prevented them from streaming (or it's just down....hopefully temporarily)

There are no professional or college games played on Christmas Eve unless it falls on Saturday or Sunday.
