KZAR/KMLR Swap

K-Love has filed to swap the calls of the two stations on Monday (12/22). I would presume that implies the quasi-facility swap will occur that K-Love filed for them in 2023 and the FCC approved.

The filings had:

  • The current KMLR 106.3 Gonzales moves to 97.7 and inherits the current KZAR facilities and takes the KZAR calls. For listeners of 97.7, it won't appear anything changes, other than the legal ID change to reflect Gonzales as the city of license.
  • The current KZAR 97.7 McQueeney moves to 106.3 and inherits the KMLR calls. However, it does not inherit the current KMLR facilities, whose current tower is near Luling. Instead, the new 106.3's transmitter is midway between New Braunfels and San Marcos to cover the I-35 corridor from the outskirts of San Antonio to the outskirts of Austin. Presumably, it fills the coverage gap between KZLV and KFMK in the two markets.

Good explanation of the swap. The new 106.3 signal should do just fine. The previous incarnation could be heard in Austin but at mediocre signal level.

I’m sure K-Love would like a better signal than KFMK for Austin itself, but nothing available at the moment.

What's wrong with KFMK? It's a good signal everywhere that matters. Is it as good as KASE? No, but its a totally adequate C2. Great HAAT from the central tower farm. I like it better than the other C2's like KROX, KQLB, KLZT and maybe KPEZ (iHeart clearly likes 102.3 better).

It's much better in terms of coverage of the Austin market than K-Love's KZLV in the San Antonio market, which always seems to outperform it's mediocre, almost rimshot signal.

Whats going to happen with the translator K280GC?

So I was just wondering will 97.7 be K-love and 106.3 be Air one when its all said and done?

I would think 97.7 stays Air 1 and 106.3 K-Love with the purpose of filling in a strong signal along the growing I35 corridor between KZLV and KFMK.

Remember the 106.3 transmitter has moved 22 miles to the northwest. Perhaps that is why it is weaker for you. I don’t think they would have filed a License to Cover unless the new transmitter was fully ready to go.
I was in Luling this morning on 183 coming down to Lavaca county i could see the tower.

I’m hearing the 106.3 from the Johnson City web tuner about the same strength I’ve had the past few days. Haven’t had RDS on it but 97.7 still has the PI code for KZAR.

The old 106.3 transmitter site was in Luling. The new one is just south of San Marcos, just west of I-35 near the outlet center.
Well from Radio locator I'm still in the local reception, just seems like it's in a fringe area now.
