CBS Evening News Anchor

The Washington Post has now weighed in on Tony Docoupil, saying he "sets a new tone for CBS Evening News."

The article basically rehashes the Bari Weiss/60 Minutes story again without a lot of specifics about Docoupil. The fact is it's different. When we're talking about the 3rd place evening news, perhaps different is good. They didn't change the pattern with John Dickerson or Jeff Glorr. So maybe this will help.

I hope they hold the same jobs as they hold every time they appear in The Onion's American Voices feature. The jobs change daily: a Cellophane Expert, a Doll Clothier and a Replica Appraiser on Saturday, while on Friday they were a Circus Administrator, a Hook Bender and a Regional Orator.
They have to be among the most recognizable internet faces ever. The Onion has only been using them since the late '90s. (It appears the Wayback Machine never archived their image URLs from that period, but I did find the 2002 group archived here.)

I wonder if they were originally well-done Photoshop composites or if they actually exist and had to deal with people stopping them on the streets...

Perhaps they are, or were, Onion staffers, so it was also an inside joke.

Could it be a Trump donor's son is trying to kill a non Trump supporter news operation. I hope I am wrong. Maybe it's just inexperienced, incompetent folks running CBS.

No, it's not like Larry turned CBS News over to the radio club at Oracle. There are still plenty of experienced hands there. They're probably just keeping their heads low these days, hoping David and Larry get bored with their new playtoy.

I think we all agree that CBS News is changing its approach to the Evening News. What we're seeing is some of the regular viewers don't like what they're seeing, and the beneficiary appears to be the new anchor of NBC Nightly News:

In the meantime, it will take time for a new audience to find CBS News. I noticed they're running promos in their sports programming to attract some sampling from them.

That audience is already at Fox News et al

The presentation at Fox News is different. It's mainly done as long-form talk. Just to get a small part of that audience would help CBS News.

Perhaps at some point Tony will evolve to that, where he just sits at the anchor desk and spouts his opinion for 30 minutes. He's not there yet.

I hope not. So far he's done an alright job of at least being "neutral."

...and that audience does not trust CBS to begin with, they have no incentive to watch it even as a Fox News knockoff when the real thing exists. So CBS is blowing out whatever audience they had with virtually nothing to show for it.

You'd have better luck taking a fourth-tier AM talker and putting on a 50s/60s oldies format in its place. In 2026.
