Goddard's Gold is gone

I heard Steve Goddard announce during the Christmas airing of "Goddard's Gold," that the next show would be the last. I didn't believe it (I thought he meant the last show of the year) but turning on KAZG this morning, that show is gone. I haven't checked Goddard's other syndicated outing "The 70's Show with Steve Goddard," (or something like that) but I wouldn't be surprised if that one has bitten the dust as well. While both shows aired in Phoenix on KAZG, both also had small national footprints--I know the first show was being aired on WAFN-fm in Arab, AL (a suburb of Huntsville) and both shows were being aired on Dunsmuir, CA's KZRO-FM.

With regard to the KAZG airing, I figured that when the show was discontinued, KAZG might move its second airing of "American Top 40 - The 70s," with Casey Kasem back to 9am to noon from the noon to 3pm slot it's holding now. However, that time hasn't changed, leading me to suspect KAZG must now have some local advertisers willing to support the show at the noon start time slot.

KIBG Bigfork MT (Big 100) was a Steve Goddard affiliate (Sunday afternoons), they have replaced it with AT40 The 70s.

KGVY Green Valley/Tucson, also carried the show. I don't know what they replaced it with.

According to the Goddard's Gold Facebook page: The decision to end the show was made by the company that distributes the show, due to a lack of national advertising support .

Huh. I've known Steve for years, and I may have missed it, but he didn't mention the end of the show on his personal FB page.

That makes sense. Keep in mind that "Goddard's Gold," with its emphasis on music between 1964 and 1974 was aimed at people who are in their 60s and 70s now and national advertisers just aren't interested in these age groups.

I would say that the target is more 70s and 80s. A person who was 13 in 1964 is now in their mid 70s and a person who was an adult in that same year is now over 80.

I'll split the difference with you. Since the median point between 1964 and 1974 is 1969, it would be that age group (who would be anywhere between their late 60s and late 70s now) that "Goddard's Gold," was appealing to.

Both wrapped up at the end of 2025, per Steve on the Facebook pages for the shows.

You know, the other reason these shows may have been cancelled is Steve Goddard's age and health. While I'm not privy to anything about his private life, if I recall correctly, Mr. Goddard is now in his early 70s and that's when, if you haven't had them before, health issues really begin to take their toll.

little known fact, Steve did/does mornings for Magic 93 KWYR Winner, SD.

He's also voiced a few liners for this small little public radio station in rural Alaska.

Steve's a friend of mine. Can we not speculate about that? If you know something that's one thing, but you've already said you don't.

Do you have any kind of time and effort it takes to put together a quality syndicated show? It becomes more of a task than enjoyment as you get older.. just a fact of life for anyone. Hes still on KAZG and i know he doesnt phone it in, so that probably takes up some time

The answer is in the third post of this thread:

Yeah, it's a lot of work. It's also a labor of love. And Steve is one of the most honest people I've ever met. If it were anything else, he'd have a major problem blaming someone else.

Steve also mentioned on the show Facebook pages, which he is still keeping active, that he hasn't ruled out bringing the shows back in some form if he can find a way to do so with a new syndicator.

I wish him luck. The smaller type of syndicator that could properly handle a specialty show like this has been disappearing from the scenes more and more in recent years, and we all know the major players aren't going to touch this.

The sad reality is that syndication pretty much has to be barter now, and only the major players are able to attract national ad sales.

I'll share that I discovered Mr. Goddard at age 38 and I altered my weekend schedule to be able to listen to him every single week. His show changed my world. I was heartbroken to lose the show.
