Off Air Dead Carrier

Keep in mind what we do (or did) for a living.
And on that subject, how can you tell when a regular joke becomes a DAD joke?

One would think they set up an "internet STL" which would allow them time to move equipment in an orderly manor with limited downtime. Either use a Barix (or whatever brand) or two PCs and a tunneling protocol.

Most rated market operators should have some redundancy on their technical plant. If you can't move equipment without a less that an hour outage, there is something wrong with the layout of the facilities. Most of the equipment from the control board output to the actual transmitter is PC based. Any knowledgeable network person be able to rig up something that would work.

If they can't move stuff in a "controlled environment / timeline" what are they going to do when something does screw up or a couple of days of bad weather. I would love to be their competitor. It's a lot harder to get or regain listeners than it is to keep them.
 
With all these changes it seems the analog backdrop from the HD signal may be a bit out of sync on 95.1. It was a very smooth transition up until the end of last week and now it seems off just a bit.

95.1 was back to full power late Wednesday morning. Good strong signal in Spartanburg, and the HD locks on.
Not totally off the air, but for the second weekend in a row, the HD signal has been off the air on 95.1, but the analog signal is fine. I guess somebody needs to flip a switch, but apparently nobody is there on the weekends. Or asleep at the wheel, whatever the case may be. I wonder if they have one main engineer for the entire Charlotte cluster, and he may be off on the weekends?

Hopefully nobody has access to the equipment to "flip a switch on or off" for the HD equipment except the engineering staff. Without turning this into an engineering thread ALL equipment up to the STL (and most STLs) can be setup to run without human intervention assuming they have UPS and generator protection. The remote control unit at the transmitter should be able to handle power surges, lighting, power outages. Of course it contacts you if something is really wrong. Depending on age and manufacturer of the HD setup, the ability to sync the HD audio with the analog is digital and once set up should not be a hassle.

The "best cheapest" setup I have was a guy who had a HD receiver at the studio. He sent the HD audio to the transmitter site via a tunneling protocol internet pair of PCs then the HD receiver at the studio feed is old analog audio microwave. There was instructions on how to use patch cords to patch around this set up if the HD failed in the control room.
