Dang! I can't believe how many I forgot. Thanks, Alzheimer's! Some of those call letters were gone even before I moved to Ohio, so I can see why I forgot them. And I really can't believe I forgot WNOB since that evolved into WDMT where I was at for two shakes of a lamb's tail.

  • WCUY (1960–1971) - unknown (unused?)
"CUY" stood for Cuyahoga. The river, the country and the owner of the station!

(Richard Eaton, owner of United Broadcasting, lost the licenses to stations in Miami and DC as well as a TV station for things like running lottery numbers and double billing. He also owned, illegally, XERF in Villa Acuña and XESM in Mexico City)

Richard Eaton. He probably deserves his own thread. His license renewals were held up for years over the numbers thing and all. I recall the sale to Zapis here only came after they finally settled the case.
When I worked there, he had a tradition of personally signing all paychecks, a daunting task when you own 14 or so stations. And he had to be nearly 90 at that time so there were paydays when the checks were late because he wasn't up to signing them all!
Wolfman Jack wrote about working for Eaton in his autobiography and I can believe his stories.

The country? I didn't know there was a country called Cuyahoga! What part of the world is that located in? 🤪
Spell correct hits again. Should be "county" of course. Home of the burning river.

Several times he visited WJMO and WCUY in Cleveland Heights. The stations were on the second floor of a Ford dealer, and there was no elevator. So staff members had to pick him up and carry him upstairs while someone else took his wheelchair. Each time there was a pool that would only be won if they dropped him; you had to pick the number of the step where the fall began.

He also had his own office supply company, and things like TP, soap and cleaning materials were sent from DC to each station. The orders were generally as much as a month late, making the staff buy their own supplies. As "gofer" I was often sent on runs to the market to get the needed goods.

Maybe as of late, compared to other local stations. But in a 30+ year span 1260 went from WDOK-AM to WIXY to WMGC to WBBG.

In about the same timeframe, 1100 went from WTAM to KYW to WKYC to WWWE.

Out of all the owners that AM 1260 had, ABC/Disney was likely the one that held onto the station the longest, at almost close to 17 years. Will The Rock be able to hold on to it for that long? This May will be their 11th anniversary.

Also, just about every new ownership filed for new call letters for 1260.
