WVLG successful with 55-plus in Villages

I know someone currently working there, a former WIMZ, Knoxville personality.

Former KHJ personality Gary Mack worked there during the last decade. (In fact, he may still be there for all I know.) When I've listened to them online, the music has mostly been classic rock music from the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Seems like they used to be more of a traditional 50's-60's oldies format and not so much classic hits, but that may have changed when the translators signed on. Time moves on even in Florida I guess.

The man who is interviewed said he changed the format in 2020. I'm not sure when I first decided to try it and found it wasn't like that.

In a very recent Radio Ink interview with the PD of WVLG, the station programmer said "We’re very fortunate. We don’t really have much competition from a radio standpoint. We’re a ‘60s through ‘90s classic hits/oldies station with a little rock."

It's not classic rock. It is an oldies station covering four decades with some oldies that lean in the rock direction... but it is not Iron Butterfly and Janis, it is more "Yacht Rock".

Yes. I just verified that you are correct. (I hadn't listened to KVLG for five or six years so I was going with what I heard the last time I listened.)

Fact check: WVLG had two FM translators that fully cover the Villages. This where most of the listeners are. Not on the AM.

And not much else. Blue is the AM daytime 2mV/m contour. Red is the combined 60dBu of both translators combined.

If the audience in that small area is largely Boomer seniors, then that format probably gets enough local ad dollars to stay afloat.

But if this is being put forward as some kind of "shining example" of success that could/should be replcated elsewhere ... um, no.

Yet, how many 'build from the swamp up' retirement communities are there - that *don't* have much in the way of support?

I'm 30 miles from another one - Green Valley, AZ.

Valid point. But even the one in The Villages has just one format. Not everyone wants to hear "oldies". Some are tired of them and have moved on, others like country or other types of music. While Top 40 gold may be the most widely accepted, it's not the only style that all those people like.

Green Valley does have hyper-local AM/FM translator KGVY. Absolutely no idea how they are doing these days, but they have been around for over 4 decades.Their programming is geared towards boomers, and the format....you guessed it....60's - 80's Oldies. Lol.

This station is just a long ad for The Villages. I stream it sometimes, and the music is constantly interspersed with promotions for whichever open house is happening that day - it's not a station standing on its own two feet, it's an audio billboard for The Villages real estate.

I heard either here on this site or somewhere else that the target audience is not the people who live there but the people young enough to be considering moving there, and so advertising is in fact for those trying to get people to move to The Villages.

How would those not living there be able to listen to a local AM with several very local translators? The ads on the station are for local retail and service providers.

And people considering a move to The Villages would be very unlikely to seek out a "local radio station there" to listen to.

So, they must already be in The Villages but they have to decide whether they want to move from where they are.

That may be what they are referring to. It doesn't seem to be on this site based on what I've looked at so far, but I think it was a Facebook post. Or possibly something from the web site where people living in The Villages post.
