KPYK Terrell Sold

Sale of KPYK has fallen through:

Couldn't close on $35,000? I wonder what the issue is? The Tates have been on quite a little spree of buying, so it sounds like this may be something deficient on Mohnkern's end. I hate to hear it. Although KPYK would have likely gone satellite-fed ESPN under E Radio, I shudder to think about who might step up next to become a suitor.

Didn't E have another set of acquisitions crash and burn a few months ago? Seems like it had a problem closing on some of Spearman's stations, or am I imagining things?

Youre correct and part of that problem was HPRN doesnt own its tower sites (couldnt borrow against them or something i seem to recall being told)

If it's still the same, then it's some form of Adult Standards.

Maybe the success of a hometown station like KGAF Gainesville, could be a model for success. If it works in Gainesville why not Terrell?
Well, for starters, Terrell and Gainesville are worlds apart in every way. Terrell is little more than a Buc-ee's on Interstate 20, with a town attached. Founded as a result of the T&P railroad laying down tracks, I don't think the railroad even makes a stop there in route to Dallas or Texarkana. Maybe UP switches out a local industry or two by rail. Amtrak doesn't stop there for passenger service, either, for that matter. Instead, it stops here in Mineola.

Gainesville is a rather beautiful town that lies just south of the state line with OK, giving you great access to some casino gambling, the river, and a wide selection of really historical buildings and features inside of the town. I don't know what the median age is up in Gainesville, but it's got to be up there. Terrell is younger, for sure. Then, you have Steve Eberhart and Bill Turner guiding KGAF. Now, that's not to take away from what the Mohnkerns have accomplished inside of the old Terrell Radio Shack, but it makes a huge difference in what each station still is in current times. KGAF is live, KPYK is (or was, last time I heard it) a satellite feed of pure big band. The stuff my father listened to with sheer dedication, and he's been dead for over 30 years.

I sure do love that Buc-ee's, though. That's one thing Gainesville can't hold a candle to.

Good points. Having never been to either town, I was just looking at things on paper, not real world facts.

Looks like Buc ee's is expanding westward, maybe they might put one up in California. Looks like a travellers dream come true!

Terrell is also solidly within the primary contour of the Cedar Hill FM sticks. Those signals are also audible in Gainesville, but there you are starting to get into the outer reaches of their range.
Outstanding point, 🐸. I take that fact for granted, due to Terrell's close proximity to the Metroplex, but like with that of Mo. City's signals from Senior Road, the coverage of, say, Humble-Atascocita from the farm is very comparable to signal strength of the Cedar Hill sticks coverage of Terrell. Heck, all of Kaufman County, for that matter.

I'll tell you what, Kat, if you've never been afforded the opportunity to experience a Buc-ee's, firsthand, you've certainly got my recommendation to do so, and quick.

It is mind-blowing how enormous some of those places are. The one in Terrell is comparatively smaller than the Luling location, outside of San Antonio. I don't think any of them can compare to the sheer size of Katy, though. That thing has, I believe it is, a 3/4 mile car wash and some 100+ fuel pumps. It is a sight to behold.

The heck with going west. We sure do need one somewhere between here in the Rose City and Shreveport. We're on a beaver desert around here. As it is, you gotta go to Terrell, an hour away.

Buc ees should build a store in Glenn Heights.

Sounds like it almost needs it's own zip code!

Out west, we have "Little America", same concept, but a hotel with a travel center.

KPYK has served the Terrell community for decades. One thing they offer that a stick from Cedar Hill will not is local news and sports coverage. I don't know how much actual local news KPYK does, but they do air Terrell High School football (and probably other sports) I don't know how much they bill now, but they clearly did enough to keep the business going for a very long time and add an FM translator a few years back. The 35k sales price was surprisingly low to me, but what do I know. I guess I'm surprised E-Radio Network couldn't close on that deal. Maybe there was something they discovered about the station they didn't like or maybe they're having more trouble than we know. I would just hope that somehow a small local station like KPYK could still survive

This was not a problem with/on Mohnkern Electronics Inc.side.. I am am aware of what happened and am ethically bound to just leave it at that. It is not my job to make comments. What you said is a false accusation otherwise, no comment.
