Audacy will have to respond to losing their affiliation with CBS News Radio by forming their own name like Infinity or Audacy News for their all news stations like KCBS, KNX, WINS, WBBM, KYW.

In the past Audacy's Sports/Talk Stations were named as Infinity Sports Radio in response to them being required to remove the CBS Sports Branding by Paramount.

Not exactly a surprise, given the Skydance acquisition last year. Almost no music stations air top-hour news these days, and the notable talk stations mostly use Fox News Radio. The former CBS Radio O&Os largely use CBS News Radio, but that's not a huge group.

They will most likely affiliate with ABC News or possibly AP.

The press release mentioned 700 affiliated stations

No, it's not exactly a surprise because Paramount is in a slow collapse that will soon become very accelerated under the weight of WBD. CBS News Radio had 700 affiliates, most not Audacy owned.

I mean, media in general is under massive assault, but Paramount has been so poorly run for so long (and has only gotten worse under Skydance so far) that they have been hit especially hard.

Cross-posting what I had written in the 770-post thread on the ongoing CBS newsroom turmoil:

While stunning, I think that handwriting had been on the wall for a long time, maybe even since the divestiture of the radio stations to Entercom/Audacy. The affiliate count was slowly shrinking. It was absent from some fairly substantial markets, including Denver and the Front Range.

The Audacy all-news stations that carried the CBS top-of-hour news will have to adjust. That could also mean adjustments in news wheels, depending upon the approach taken.

The question isn't really the total number of stations. The radio network makes its money by selling national reach. But having a 1kW AM in northern Wisconsin doesn't provide any reach. (Mathematically it does, but it is a rounding error compared to KNX)

Indeed. The re-merger of Viacom and CBS (which created Paramount Global) was obviously a bad idea.

I really anticipate ABC News Radio to follow at some point.
Agreed. All the business problems that led to to CBS's decision today apply to ABC.

One thing we haven't mentioned yet is a still-terrible national radio ad market, which affects all competitors equally. Decades ago, the hourly news would be followed by an ad for a major brand like Ford or Pepsi. Today it's likely to be followed by an ad for tax relief.

So, what are the choices now for world and national news updates?

Conservative talk radio has Townhall, USA, and FOX (although they brand as "Fair and Balanced").

There's still AP, NBC, and ABC, also BIN to some extent.

I've noticed an unbranded world and national news update on KFI and KNEW overnights (from Premiere?) On KFI they breakaway after 2 minutes with a different state and local news update.

Did I miss any?

24/7 News Source offers TOH wearing a NBC News Hat or unbranded. (To Big A’s point, the NBC News Radio branded reports are no longer offered on the iHeart app, but they still exist.)

Fox News Radio and ABC News Radio are still out there. AP has a TOH but I don’t think it’s 24/7.

Is USA Radio News still out there?

Are you sure? What I see is an audio feed of NBC News Now, which is NBC's video streaming service

Trust me. They still produce a version of the newscasts with NBC News branding.

Also, that 24/7 News channel has used the NBC News Now audio during breaking news situations. I was listening when the first reports about Iran hit.

So between that and the NBC Olympics audio, there’s clearly still some deal going on between iHeart and NBC.

Yes. NPR. Also, Fox hasn't used the "Fair and Balanced" branding for quite some time now.

I don't see commercial radio utilizing NPR.

FOX either still says or used to always say " We report, you decide". It's always been an attempt to seperate the radio news cast from the conservative cable channel.
