RO selling off the Mix signals

With BBN picking up 100.9 its like a perfect fit between the 91.1 Gastonia and 95.5 Greensboro sign to keep I 85 covered from Greenville into Virginia when you include 92.5 Raleigh.

Re: 91.1, you mean Gaffney (sp). I don't think 100.9 gets out that good, just from listening in the past, but it is another signal and will add to what they already have. Yeah, 95.5 sure gets out, grew up in that area.

I don’t think this was planned. R1 just submitted a request to upgrade 100.9 to a C3. Why spend the money on an engineer and FCC fees if you’re about to flip it?

I’m sure R1 is losing money on Mix with the high talent costs, especially considering the ratings drop and inferior signals. They can make some money by selling the stations, and concentrate on more profitable formats. I could also see them selling 1110, and even 610. They moved the “host” to 105.3 HD2 a few years back, so they don’t really need the AM signal.

With them keeping the WLNK calls, they’re either going to park them somewhere or they’re acquiring another signal for the Mix format. Not sure what they could acquire, as all of the full market signals are owned by Beasley, iHeart or Radio One except for 95.7, and I don’t think Dave Lingafelt is going to ever sell. Could Beasley or iHeart sell an underperforming signal to R1? I doubt it. There’s WOLS, which has a very similar contour map to WPZS’s upgraded signal. Don’t know what their situation is. Only other option is a signal from another market that they could “move in”.
Not sure if WOLS would be for sale. That’s the flagship for Norsan’s La Raza regional Mexican format, they’ve made a number of acquisitions over the past couple of years but none are doing that well.

Fun fact - WOLS was known as WNMX “Mix 106” from 1996-2008.

I’m just speculating. The reason I was thinking WOLS is because I’m sure the immigration crackdown is having a negative impact on Hispanic businesses. Don’t know how Norsan is doing revenue wise

They’ve definitely slowed down from their 2023-2024 acquisition spree.

what about 93.5? what will BBN do with them? their footprint includes a lot of duplicate space with 100.9. i guess with the move to weddington it would make sense to keep the simulcast.

The 91.1 Gaffney signal reaches into Greenville to the west and the 92.5 Raliegh signal travels into VA.

That, they do. I used to listen to WYFL, Henderson, back in my GMS days as a kid, specifically, The Captain's Club. Had a friend who I heard of back in the day and later got acquainted with, who worked there, the late Don League, one of those blind DJs, yeah buddy. He worked all over the place and for a couple BBN stations, but his first station, was WWMO, Reidsville, NC.

They'll keep Wadesvoro.

What did they buy in 2023-4? Shows how much I’m paying attention.
They bought a solid C3 in Greenville-Spartanburg that Audacy had to divest to complete their bankruptcy due to ownership caps. They also bought additional stations in Jacksonville, Austin, a full market FM and an AM (or 2) in Orlando, and an FM translator down in Columbia.

They probably won’t sell WOLS then.

One reason you might spend money to file for an upgrade on a station you intend to flip is that non-commercial operators tend to pay by the head. A signal that even covers a few thousand more people can easily pay for the work required to file for the upgrade.

Also possible is that Urban One intended to upgrade the two stations, and the offers on them arrived unsolicited due to the better signal coverage.

I expect either a station or format swap is in the works between Urban One and another operator, or the sports format on 92.7 goes to 1110 with Mix landing at 92.7.

WFNZ has been top 5 in the demos consistently since moving to 92.7. They’re not going to downgrade and lose those ratings, especially without 99.3. Sports is the best performing format Radio One has had on the 92.7 stick.

92.7 doesn’t cover a lot of Mix’s high listening areas, so that doesn’t make sense.

I just noticed that when they did the call letter swaps, WLNK from 107.9 to 100.9 became WLNK-FM. Obviously with the sale of 100.9 to BBN they're keeping the calls and intellectual property, so it's probably a moot point. But why would they have not simply moved WLNK (no suffix) to 100.9? I don't know if I'm overthinking it, but I tend to think things like this aren't done without a reason.

Roger on that. I've said it before and looks like I'm saying it again. One of two things is going to happen, when an owner puts a lot of money into a station. One, he's trying to keep it or two, he's fixin' to sell.

I tend to agree with this. Sports has worked on 92.7, which had been mostly a dog forever. I can’t see WFNZ being ditched or downgraded for a format (Mix) that’s had mediocre returns at best.

Plus, R1 can probably package sell plus share resources between BT and FNZ.
