Agreed, but you have a very excellent point. Nobody wants WWIII, especially if it goes nuclear.

Also agree.

However, let's keep it focused on broadcasting, lest lanceventa comes in and shuts the thread down.

That said....

How is media coverage going on the rapidly approaching deadline of complete destruction?

CNN, for it's part, seems to be devoting a bit of time to it (not wall-to-wall, of course; that will probably, maybe, hopefully? happen as we get closer).

CNN is always better at this sort of coverage. Too bad nobody is watching.

True at one point that was the case for CNN historically but given the recent pending merger with Paramount I don’t know for how long given the concerns media critics have about Bari Weiss and the Ellisons running CNN in addition to CBS News if that gets finalized. Today it’s go outside the US like ABC News Australia, BBC News, CBC News, DW News, Al-Jazerra to get better news coverage.

Fittingly, yesterday I woke up to WMTR playing Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction".
My local community station, which generally leans radical left even for here, gave that one an airing while I was cooking dinner tonight as well. They also dug out Jesus Was A Cross Maker by Judee Sill, which isn't quite so on the nose, but a song I'd totally forgotten.

For some reason, it airs Democracy Now from Pacifica every morning - an odd programming choice in the UK.

Iran war latest: Trump warns, a 'whole civilization will die tonight' as 8 p.m. deadline looms

If you count this as Fox News even this is mentioned. Also the 25th Amendment is being brought up against Trump for this one over Iran and yes it’s being mentioned on the Live Now feed the streaming service from Fox. If Trump starts ranting against Fox News all you have to do is look here at Live Now on Fox to find out.

After several delays, President Donald Trump has issued an ultimatum for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz, calling it his final offer. President Trump took to social media, warning a "whole civilization will die" if his deadline isn't met. Trump also said he is not concerned about possibly committing war crimes as he threatened to destroy Iranian infrastructure.

Pope admonishes Trump's threats

3:53 p.m. ET: Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday said that Trump's threat to destroy Iran was "truly unacceptable."

Leo didn’t cite Trump by name but in comments in English he urged people to contact their political leaders and congressional representatives "to ask them, tell them to work for peace and to reject war."

It is what it is. At the end of the day, there's really nothing the media can do about the man sitting in the white house.

He's there for another 3 years, barring an act of nature. Unless someone of authority does something, that won't change.

The media has no power to change anything, including changing minds. People believe what they want to believe.

Oh well, that settles that. Yay, portfolios.

Why do we have a mainstream broadcast press? To report facts and bring them to the audience? Or to sanewash the insane?

Now that we sit at the precipice of potential mass destruction, the NY Times bothers to report how we were led into this mess by an easily manipulated imbecile to do the bidding of another country. No rush there, NYT. It’s all good.

We might as well have sitcom reruns in place of network news for all the commitment they show to anything resembling being the fourth estate.

The media may not have the direct power to change people's minds but it sure as hell has both the power and responsibility to tell truth to power, regardless of who is listening.

The crazy part is we keep having to find out its both sanewash and report facts at the same time if we are only talking about how the domestic US for-profit mainstream media is currently in 2026. But then again we need to look at a better mainstream media system outside the US as I mentioned earlier in this thread to get facts.

So you want some reporter to tell the president he's crazy? That will be the end of that reporter. Do you remember what happened to Jim Acosta?

What do you want them to do? March into the white house with guns and arrest him? Good luck. Try to be realistic.

If congress can't or won't stop him, and the people around him won't stop him, who else is there? Scott Pelley?

Here's how the president handles "truth to power." He threatens them with jail:

My online pet peeve is folks, including lawmakers and media personalities shouting "25th" into the void. Umm, JD Vance (who is campaigning for Viktor Orban in Hungary) and a cabinet of sycophants aren't going start the process. Trump could and would fight it, and then it would take 3/4 of both houses to remove him. It's not the "easy" button. Impeach, convict, remove is the only option.

Tell him? No, but don’t normalize the abnormal in the reporting. As someone suggested, try to be realistic. No need to even say the word crazy. But stop ignoring reality.

The dude who went off on his own and is not being constrained by the friends of Donald at CNN? Maybe at some point courage matters. The networks caving to a dictatorial madman is the big issue.

So you make up an inane straw man that no one suggested and call on others to be realistic.

Yet again, more false dichotomies. Reporting facts—hard, ugly facts—and not sugar coating this as if it’s normal, coherent behavior will not stop it, but it would be better than what they’re doing.

Ok, and? Let’s close up shop because the fascist makes a threat. That’s what enables them to seize power and not let go. But that’s probably good for the bank account.

I think before the 70s, news was a loss leader, not a profit center.
I was involved in radio going back to the late 50's and news was, indeed, part of the national radio and TV networks' image enhancement efforts. But news was a profit center and intended to make money for those networks.

In fact, as radio networks lost the appeal of their entertainment shows, news became the only profit center for them.

Exclusive: Intelligence report warned of Iran's 'persistent threat' to US as White House downplayed the risk - https://www.reuters.com/world/us/in...um=notifications&utm_campaign=2025_engagement

OK we have this Reuters has more hard reporting on the White House and Pentagon's response to where we are now with Iran. The wire services are the one we need to protect the most here because that's the one we say is the gold standard in journalism. its the ugly parts that are not sugar coated here.
