Sports to replace KNX News simulcast at 97.1 FM

Brock and Alex is ROUGH. Why is Brock even there, Alex keeps talking over him. It felt like listening in to a first date where someone is trying to get the person to like them but never asks questions about them. It’s just one talking. Zero chemistry.
I thought Brock and Alex was the best of the three shows. Alex has a TON of energy. Derek and Decker has potential, but Derek needs a Red Bull or a strong cup of coffee. I realize 6am is early, but Derek is wayyyy too sleepy for morning drive in LA.

I see what you’re saying about Derek’s energy. But I think he provides great insight, especially about the Lakers. He’s “entertaining “ enough to listen to. He might not need Sedano and Kap energy

The station is very positive about the Lakers and very down about the Angels. I’m reading tea leaves. But, I feel 97.1 will try their hardest to get Lakers rights. Anyone know the details of the KSPN/Lakers deal?

The KSPN radio deal with the Lakers was extended in 2025. No end date was listed on the press release.
You have to wonder if there is contract language enabling the Lakers to opt out of the 710AM deal should an FM station become an option.

Yes, for decades.... from its April 15, 1968 launch and through its first couple decades KNX mixed in audio from a live microphone situated inside its actual news teletype room.
Growing up in Northern California, I don’t think o ever heard teletype sounds on KCBS, even in the 1970s. I do, however remember it prominently when hearing KNX at night. Cheesy effects work better in LA

Judging by streaming on the Audacy app, KNX is still running brokered programming this morning (Saturday) as of the 8 a.m. hour. I thought they had a separate, live feed where news was still going when they were on FM and maybe also on streaming while brokered programming is on AM? In comparison, KCBS is still live at the moment.

Why are they on 93.1 HD2? The 97.1 signal is one of the strongest in LA
Not really. KPFK, KBIG and KRTH, among others, are stronger signals.

When comparing the two specific frequencies you mentioned: yes, both are on Mt. Wilson. But 93.1 has a higher tower. Also, 97.1 is directional away from the high-desert areas of Los Angeles County. Decades ago, that may not have mattered. But Palmdale and Lancaster are very large commuter cities now. It matters enough that KIIS and KYSR (last I checked) have full-power satellite stations out there.

Also, 97.1 cannot increase their power, because they had to lower ERP significantly when they moved up from Flint Peak decades ago.
