David Chaney retires

He's been doing weather for 42 years. It was nice that Fox 5 allowed him to have his wife and family in the studio for the 5:30 weather forecast. His last weather cast will be during the 6pm newscast.

Was a nice send off. David was one of the best in the market. Any ideas on who might be the new chief? Or if David will eventually end up over at ANF?? hahaha ;)

Joanne Feldman has been promoted to Chief Meteorologist at Fox 5, meaning two Atlanta stations with female chief mets (Jennifer Valdez on WANF is the other).

By the way, the last name is spelled Chandley.

I saw a post on Fox 5 that she was "more valuable" to the chemistry of the Fox 5 morning show which I understand brings in some serious revenue. I sure they did some kind of audience research or testing.

Yeah I saw that they mentioned on air that it is non-traditional for chief meteorologist to do mornings. But as stated above Joanne is a better fit for a Good Day. However during tornado warnings, and other emergencies.... I wonder if she'll be the one too come in and do those in the evenings or even at night. 🤔

I do have to say, Jonathan Stacey does an impeccable job overall, So as lead-meteorologist, I can see him taking over weather emergencies

Congrats again to Joanne. She deserves it! ❤️

IDK

But do they need two weather folks? Would a really good "graphic" person do just as well off camera? Of course a "real" weather caster could actually call the National Weather Service in PT City. There is a unlisted number for the media and law enforcement and get a idea of where they are looking for severe storm development. Brad on channel 2 so how gets info if the NWS is going to let a warning die or renewed.

My understanding is the NWS in Peachtree City has an open Slack chat with all the on air TV (maybe radio too) meteorologists during severe weather threats.

I don’t know why any TV meteorologist would be calling NWS instead of using Slack.

When I worked morning drive I had to sleep 11PM till 4 AM at least or have a crappy show and that was radio where no one knew if you missed you morning shower 🚿.

It can be done but IIRC their morning show is 4 or 5 AM till 11 and your are on HD cameras so you have to be presentable. Do they have a lounge were on air folks can sleep if there is an "emergency"? To be totally honest I don't have how the one air folks do their own makeup at 4 or 5 AM. Especially in smaller markets where you are basically on your own.

A couple of years ago Brad informed Glen Burns on the air and said they just got the phone with Peachtree City and they were shutting down and taking cover due to a tornado warning. Birmingham was taking over.

Actually shutting down and having another office cover for you that happens more than people realize.

They follow their own advice and take cover. I wonder why they don't have underground storm safe offices to start with?
