Urban One to Acquire KKDA and KRNB, Divest KZMJ

No mention of the station’s beginnings as KGAF-FM? Also left out Z-Rock and the original version of The Edge.🤔🤪
Do they really have to go through the entire encyclopedic history of the frequency and long-gone formats? Especially when the listeners to those incarnations moved on decades ago? This was for Majic/R&B era listeners, who's opinion would likely be WGAF about KGAF.

Only true Black radio heads will remember The Edge and Z-Rock. KGAF even I don't remember.

KGAF-FM went to 100kw in 1965, but it was on a 370 foot tower a couple miles east of Gainesville. It moved to an 1100 ft stick in the mid 80s, which enabled fringe coverage in northern DFW in time for the 1987 arrival of Z-Rock, but it wasn't until May 1990 that the 1900 ft stick was constructed, giving the signal decent coverage over most of the market. (KDGE even managed to reach #1 in 18-34 during Alternative's heyday on the signal.)

It is obvious since they moved Rickey Smiley to the 97.9 frequency, it is going Urban AC. His show is mostly heard on that sort of format. I don't think Majic is going away, they are just switching frequencies. It looks like 105.7 is going to be the one to either flip or be sold. If Radio One does keep 105.7, they will probably go to the Praise format. The market does have KGGR-AM 1040 for Urban Gospel, but it is only a daytime station. This would be Radio One's opportunity to put the format on a stronger FM signal.

105.7 is not going gospel. The most likely scenario is move KRNB to the Cedar Hill stick, and move KZMJ to 105.7. KZMJ maybe will move musically to a more classic R&B format like they did in Philadelphia. As it been said many times on this board, moving KRNB to a better signal would improve it dramatically. They do well on the Decatur stick, imagine what it will do if they got to Cedar Hill. Radio One wanted KKDA-FM and KRNB for so long, why would they buy it just to flip it. IMO having two strong Urban AC’s and one Urban positions Radio One to serve black adults in this market.

Quick question. How did the sale of 94.5 close so fast, but the Service sale is still pending?
The are separate independent transactions. The FCC approved the sale of KZMJ 6/23 and approved the separate KKDA-FM/KRNB sale 6/26. Both had clauses that the sale closure date is to be within 10 business days of the FCC grant of the transfer of ownership. So, the KZMJ completed Tuesday (day 9). Presumably, Urban One closes on KKDA-FM/KRNB either Friday (6/26 + 9 business days) or Monday (6/26 + 10 business days).

the purchase by my boss os 3 station dealt with 3 diff. companies held by the same person, was approved in 70 days and closed one day approval

The FCC granted the transfer of control on June 26th. I’m not sure if the deal has fully closed yet, though, Radio One’s Maryland address and their attorney’s email are listed on the license now for KKDA-FM, but the Service information is listed on KRNB’s license per LMS.

I talked to a couple of my contacts at Service and they said that they hadn’t been told anything, but it appears that a lot of the decisions are still up in the air. The changes may not happen right away. All of the stations are going to be some type of urban format.

But the market already had TWO Urban AC stations and there wasn't room for both of them. That doesn't make sense. Even if one is more Classic, that is still too much competition within your own back yard. It would make more sense to fill an urban format hole which isn't being super served in the market. That is why I think they MAY go the Urban gospel format in DFW. But only time will tell.

They’re not flipping to gospel. The format doesn’t make any money, and the company has been downgrading a lot of those stations in recent history.

Let's think about it: Although 94.5 and 105.7 are on two weak signals, 105.7 is on the stronger weak signal.

I've talked to friends who live around DFW, and they said they like 94.5, but when they tune in, they get static.

I honestly think KRNB is successful, because it is the lesser of two weak signal evils.
