“Days of our Lives” to move the hourglass to Peacock

A poster on a
competing site has suggested that CBS should now move Y&R to 1 PM in the East and let the affiliates
have 12:30-1 for local news,
That was me. I honestly doubt they would do that as long as Y&R is still on the air but I would love to see it happen. Admittedly it makes no sense to cut the Talk to 30 minutes and expand B&B to an hour because The Talk is much cheaper to produce. Now I could see the affiliates get 12:30-1 if Y&R and B&B get the Days treatment in a couple years and CBS could air a “CBS Daytime News” type program to compete with “NBC News Daily” and GMA3.

Yes, I think daytime serials are going the way of the fully enclosed, climate-controlled mall, the manual shift car and, well, AM radio, LOL. Seriously though, I have many fond memories of my grandmother and I watching Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow and much of the CBS lineup in the summer and on school holidays, so it saddens me to see this era end.
My 82-year-old grandmother (who doesn't have a computer or a tablet) still watches Y&R at 11:00am every morning. She was also a big fan of Guiding Light and was saddened when CBS yanked it for LMAD.
My mom was saddened when CBS yanked As the World Turns for The Talk. ATWT was known for a lot of 'everyday life' storylines, not as many of those mob/criminal storylines like General Hospital. My family never watched Days of Our Lives because of the timeslot conflicts with ATWT.
In the late '60s, my family was big fans of Dark Shadows. It came on when mom got home from elementary school, and she loved Barnabas.

I don't know how long ABC will keep GH going, hopefully a few more years, but they have had a few major changes since COVID. Y&R is still #1 and has been for decades, and B&B is popular in Europe.
Peacock isn't available in Canada IIRC, so I don't know what will happen with Global TV's Days broadcasts. For a long time, they have aired Y&R a day ahead of the states (and many U.S. fans get spoilers that way).
Some die-hard Y&R fans used to tape the day-ahead feed on Anik satellite when it came on at 4 or 5 AM ET.

Remember that there are affiliated NBC stations and Owned and Operated NBC stations. O&O's are required to run programming as decided by the main office. Affiliates are required to carry certain shows to remain as an affilliate, but have more leeway in dayparts like daytime.
In the 70's and 80' stations like WMC 5 in Memphis dropped a big part of NBC's daytime schedule (Mainly the morning game shows) and carried syndicated talk shows instead. NBC caved in to the stations rather than making them stay with the network lineup and gradually gave more time back to the stations, which was the beginning of the demise of NBC's daytime schedule to the point where it will be nothing but news and talk shows after Days moves to Peacock.

LMAO. Hate to burst your bubble but currently The Talk’s ratings are very very bottom of the barrel and it’s doing very bad in both ratings and in demos. This is not 1986 or 1996 anymore and because B&B still does well internationally in its 30 minute format for the most part I haven’t heard of any expansion plans since Guiding Light was almost cancelled in 1996. Could it use better writing of course but no one, I mean no one interested in expanding B&B into an hour at all or has been for the last quarter of a century.

I think the one thing CBS at least resembles is a traditional daytime line-up of a mix of soaps, game shows, and a talk show. ABC and NBC have been crap for years, and Y&R still somehow magically pulls better numbers than some of its primetime shows these days.

Feel sorry for the ppl that have to answer the phone at the affiliates.
Believe me, those affiliates are used to it. Soaps get pre-empted a lot. The last time was due to daytime coverage of the Jan. 6 hearings. The month of March is absolute torture for the CBS soap fans (NCAA March Madness). If it's a scheduled break (Olympics, Wimbledon, etc) they just go on hiatus, so viewers don't miss an episode upon return.

It's those unscheduled ones (Special reports, Breaking News, press conferences) when the angry mob of soap fans descend upon that poor soul answering phones at the TV station. Those episodes aren't put on hold., KNSD, the NBC affiliate for San Diego (and owned by NBC) has a nasty habit of airing those pre-empted episodes at 3:30 AM! When that already angry phone caller hears that..well, you can only imagine that conversation going from bad to worse...BTW, I've been one of those phone callers (not an angry one), but you can tell that the receptionist has already told this to hundreds of people. Before you can even finish your question, in a very tired, ready to quit this job kind of voice..."today's episode of DOOL will air at 3:30 AM"...click.

There's bound to be a few hundred thousand...okay maybe a tens of thousands of little old ladies that watch exclusively OTA that are gonna be pissed that their favorite is moving to streaming.

So...any bets on how much longer these three stay in the OTA category?

The Bold and the Beautiful (1987- ) The Young and the Restless (1973- ) and General Hospital (1963 - )
My mother-in-law will be among them.

My local NBC affiliate already airs News from 12:35am to 1pm. From 1-4 it's Days of our Lives, Rachel Ray and Jeopardy.
4-6:30pm more News then Wheel of fortune and NBC primetime. Then News at 10pm then NBC latenight from 10:35-12:35am and back to News.

Only 3 syndicated shows plus NBC programs the rest is News.

I was actually wondering about that. With all the infighting among the hosts and the somewhat revolving door of hosts and staff on that show, it's almost become a soap opera in itself. I tried to watch it a few times when scanning through channels looking for something...anything worth watching on the 800+ channels I supposedly get with my subscription. I'm not sure what the pre-show warm up is like for the studio audience, but the few times I've seen it the ladies would scream like banshees at everything the guest would say or any answer they would give. One guy was talking about ditching his ex and walking away from her - in other words being an ass and treating another human like garbage, and the ladies in the audience were SCREAMING in approval for some reason. Ugh.

March Madness used to cause daytime pre-emptions on just two days: the first Thursday and Friday of the tournament. All the other games in the NCAA tournament have been scheduled for prime time or on weekends. I can't remember a time when that wasn't the case.
IIRC most of the mid-day games now air on TBS/TNT/TruTV specifically to avoid CBS pre-empting daytime programs and the affiliates' early evening news.

Wimbledon has been on ESPN for a decade, so it hasn't pre-empted "Days" recently.

In fact, I can't think of any sporting events that are regularly scheduled for weekdays on broadcast networks.

CBS blows out the daytime lineup on Thursday and Friday the first week of the tournament.

They give the evening news window to the affiliates.

And each of the four remaining (soon to be 3) network soaps has a storyline specialty, to explain why one becomes someone's favorite. What I love about Days are the "crazy fun", outrageous, over the top, implausible, campy storylines. They have a bit of everything. As well as the most humor and comedic relief.

GH is known for murder and mayhem, cops vs. the mob, criminal activity, and the occasional epic disaster. And the highest number of onscreen fatal casualties.

B&B is all about love, and romance, couples hooking up and breaking up.

Y&R is the closest to the trials and tribulations of everyday life No outrageous storylines, maybe a murder now and then. The most realistic, you could say..
Y&R might be one of the best lit programs on television. It's not lit like a TV show like most shows. It actually has dramatic lighting. Watch Days or GH and it looks like a stage show.

CBS had shown soccer matches in recent months in the afternoon with The Talk and LMAD being casualties at times.

If the Talk's ratings are bad, what would CBS replace it with? Most likely another talk or news show, so is that any improvement? My guess would be a midday news show to compete with GMA 3 and NBC News Daily, but that would most likely mean either moving B&B or canceling it as well.

I am hoping Peacock to stream classic soap opera like Passions.
I don’t think B&B and Y&R will be going away anytime soon. As the bold and the beautiful will hit its 40th anniversary in 2027. So I can see another renewal after the 2024 contract is up both the shows pull in about 3 to 4 million viewers a week which is about the same as the Price Is Right.

I’d actually like to see the Talk shortened or cancelled. And yeah I realize there’s not a shot in hell B&B will be expanded to an hour. There’s no need to be rude. There’s a difference between what you want to happen and what you think will happen.
