10 AM on 96.9, and...

I actually enjoy the suspense...I hope "Wish" 969 follows "The Bone."
Eventually, I'd like to see an all news outlet (akin to 1010 WINS, or
880 CBS in NY)...WBZ without the talk shows.

I wish it were as simple as making our voices heard. Unfortunately radio is a ratings game and with WBCN flipping, WFNX being sold, and WAAF's ratings tanking, it seems like we will all have to move in order to hear contemporary rock radio (or stream it online). For whatever reason, the format doesn't work in Boston anymore. RIP rock \m/

Yes, and WAAF is just way too over the place. New rock, old rock, bad rock, good rock. The Bone needs tweaking, but not a huge amount. AAF is old and fading, ZLX is too timid, 92.9 is ridiculously narrow and stuck in the '90s, this station if done right can hold the rock audience in Boston.

Huh? ??? so far I have heard 96.9 The Bone play Whitesnake, Van Halen, Zep, Aerosmith, Foreigner, Blue Oyster Cult, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Black Sabbath, Poison, to name but a few... how much older can you get than that? ::)

and the only selection I have heard from the 90's so far has been "Plush" by STP.

The mainstream Rock format seems to be struggling everywhere these days. PPM has not been kind to the format.

Very true. I just made a 500 mile drive yesterday from Cleveland, OH to Charlotte, NC and found very few rock stations outside of classic rock along the way.

A lot of country and AC/CHR.

I don't know which deserves more blame: the PPMs or the advertisers' obsession with 25-44 women. Either way, rock loses. And don't forget that the hip-hop revolution that splintered CHR in the '90s actually made rap fans out of plenty of teens and 20s, and they're still listening to rap and other barely melodic genres today. I know. I work with several guys in their 30s, all white, and not one of them is into rock at all. The only rockers around are us dinosaurs with our classic rock and oldies.

I really think Entercom missed an opportunity here to bring WRKO to FM to capitalize on the demise of 96.9. If they want WAAF to be Boston's rock station (they abandoned their city of license years ago), they could have taken the WAAF calls as Bob suggests to 97.7 and put WRKO on 107.3. That immediately dismisses the signal fade out that Howie has whined about all these years on WRKO's signal after dark.
And I get 97.7 quite well in Metrowest and Worcester so those that want to, can still listen to WAAF.

Not sure how well ZLX is doing but CBS sticks with it; as for AAF, ditto though it was imp.
for them to get the signal into Boston via 97.7...and yes who knows, putting RKO on 107.3 even
as just a simulcast can help the signal out west. After dark RKO goes north-south.

WAAF signal (radio-locator having problems but I did a search and found this on a cache)

I know you are a pro and usually agree with your posts about 95-99% of the time, but I have to respectfully disagree with you there. I guarantee you NOBODY who used to listen to WFNX would listen regularly to a station with a playlist like that.

All good. I apologize if that came across as if they are specifically targeting the FNX listener. Not what I meant.

It's not about listening. It's about exposed "listening." Nobody's targeting an audience anymore. They want to be *on* where potential meter holders congregate. It's the bane of our existence.

My bet is former 'FNX listeners aren't meter carriers anyway. Meter holders are contest players. People who perform for the payoff. Pavlov's dogs. The most ubiquitous formats are the winners right now in PPM. With Boston's pseudo-cosmopolitan image, I suspect the stations played in shops, and offices want to appear to be less Magic, and not quite JAMN. This is what Mix is trying to achieve.

Male buys are fewer & far-between now. Everyone's budgets have been slashed, and more buying is coming from national agencies who have no idea what the format is. Nor, do they care. What's your rating point? That's it.

They look at a demo, buy (and this is a shocker) mid top-ten performers. Why? Value. if you're #1, you're too expensive, and my dollar doesn't go as far. The companies who can fortify the buys with flankers, that rank the same with regard to ratings point, but are more cost-effective, take the dollars off the table.

With compression, a .4 is a .4. Whether you're #3 or #14. Agencies don't have time to hear how ratings points aren't equal. Show me the numbers, buy 4 deep in whatever demo. We're done.

It's not about the product. It's about product placement. *Be on everywhere* Perceived hipness so that the environment sounds vibrant is the M.O. in retail. And retail is where the (meter holders) people congregate.

Who controls the money? Who controls the radio? Women. What's the secret to overall success in PPM? Women. If you have them, you win. That's where the money & meters are most likely to be.

I stand by my guesstimate.

Well, I guess there listen 6a-12n on Monday for an important station announcement was a bluff. As of 12n, they're still The Bone.

Is it me, or is this flip starting to get a tad tedious?

What's taking so long. Sadly, nobody really cares out of this board and a few followers on Twitter.

Paul, the only beef I would have with your assessment/prediction is a pop/alternative Hot AC could steal listeners from WBOS and Magic. The bulk of the available cume is sitting with Kiss, Jam'n and Amp. All three are playing contemporary pop music to some degree. Kiss & Jam'n have heritage, and there are plenty of 25-44 women who grew up with those stations that may be disenfranchised. A "stepdown" station between Kiss/Jam'n and Magic makes sense, and it fits in with what GM normally does, but I think doing it with a pop alt lean instead of a rhythmic one could inflict more damage on their other properties than on the competition. I think if they do Rhythmic AC, playing lots of the songs WJMN did back in the day, along with selected current songs and aim it 25-44 women, they'd do very well. It wouldn't conflict, and it would squarely target older demo listening among the big cuming stations. They could fall into that #4 or 5 in the target demo and be very sale-able. Plus this format would play to Cadillac Jack and Pebbles' strengths.
