100.1 FM WVVE FM "100.1 The Wave"

Just heard the "launch"...they played a little bit about the "History of Women in Radio" and how this station was one of a kind, etc. Then the morning show awkwardly premiered with Dee sounding like she was kinda mad that she had to work with someone completely green in radio (and apparently they only have 1 working microphone, that or Dee wanted all the processing to herself). The music makes it sound like it's a wanna-be dance station with a Hot A/C effect.

This is the most I'll ever listen to this signal for a while.

I don't live in PCB, but this kinda format is not really new (except that this is on FM). WRHB 1410 in Lakeland has it (and if there are any ratings at all, I'd be surprised)....also there was the 990 in Dallas, which was apparently part of a revolving door of formats there.

I read on Wiki about the 1410, and it was started by a lady from Trinidad who puts a lot of her work into it. Makes me wonder if she has any influence in V100.

There was also "Diva 92.3" in New Orleans, although they emphazised rhythmic AC. Not sure if it was meant to be a women's format.

Hey ROB Nate:

Maybe their strobey things are working, but I can't get audio on their website and it's stuck on Lifehouse!!! What songs are you hearing? Looks like Beach broke Wave...

80's, 90's and today? If it's done right, it might just work. Not seeing or hearing a playlist, I can't tell. Morning show territory marking? Hmmm! Sounds like typical Gulf Coast radio. Reminds me of my most favorite radio moment ever:

Yes!

There's a sweeper on Sunny 98 that says "If you listened to WAVE 100, welcome to the only station that plays hits from 70s 80s and 90s."

Yes!

Matchbox 20, UB-40, Pink, Train...you could pipe this into a Cougar Club and they'd all melt.

Could be worse places to visit... ;D

Sadly, if I had PFM, I would have taken it somewhere near there. Just depends on how live and lively they sound.

Music doesn't really have a flow...maybe they're still adjusting the music schedules, but the songs just are all over the place - from tempo to age. But I could see a leathery-tan woman on the beach blasting this from her boom box while passed out on her towel next to an empty margarita glass.

tibbs...kinda busy but to answer your question....yes they did quite well several years ago (Dibacco/Styles regime)...

V-100....music for your vagina

Vagina 100

ok...back to work...

Can someone explain to me how the same cluster responsible for large market-sounding stations like Island 106 and 97X unleashed this onto Panama City? It's not possible that the same people are involved...right?

I haven't heard morning drive so I won't comment, but even if they sound weak, I've learned that it's not fair to judge any show/personality this early in the game. I'll give them time to develop, but the rest of the station is another story. Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. First of all, who deemed it a good idea to launch a Hot AC with Island 106 in the same building? If you're going to launch a cheaply-run station, wouldn't you try to siphon off from stations ACROSS THE STREET? Actually, never mind. This isn't a Hot AC. I wouldn't even say this station has a format, because that word implies a sense of structure and focus which this station clearly lacks.

The logo is ugly and the imaging is hysterically bad. I understand the importance of appealing to women, but schmaltzy doesn't even begin to describe it. Sounds like a bunch of dudes trying way too hard to get in touch with their feminine sides; I can't help but wonder how many times Ann DeWig had to re-record the copy as she stifled back laughter. Finally, the music is disastrous. "The Time of My Life" from Dirty Dancing into "Goodbye" by Kristinia Debarge into "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day into "Cherish" by Madonna? Do they think anyone is going to sit through that debacle? It sounds like someone snorted a few lines and then decided to have some fun with Selector.

Here's a sweeper I just heard: "Seduce, entice, tease and satisfy. Who knew a radio station could do all of that?" Um, excuse me? What does that even MEAN? What woman talks like that? And what's with the sweepers promoting middays at 10:00 at night? (Don't get me started on Tesh killing the momentum with his minutes-long rambling sessions during music sweeps.)

All wrong. They should have refocused with Wave's former format and tried to combat Sunny, or if they really felt the need to flip formats, they could have gone Country to try and steal some shares from 'PAP, Oldies... The good news for Island is that the music is such a trainwreck that I don't see this supposed "Hot AC" hurting them.

I had to make a separate post for this gem. Right now they're playing "Knock You Down" by Keri Hilson featuring Kanye West and Ne-Yo. Yes, complete with Kanye's rap.

I'm not even going to comment. Draw your own conclusions.

There has been an opportunity in the PC market for a well-run Hot AC for a long, long, long, long time. Whether this is it sounds questionable, but the Big Picture Strategy ("Hey, let's take it Hot AC!") isn't off the mark. Done correctly a Hot AC can complement a CHR and help build a "demo wall" in women. The demographic "hole" in the market is enormous. Yes, Tibbs, this is the general position that the Great 108 should have been in for the past decade-or-so, but OO has been adamant in their desire for PFM to be the Other CHR, instead.

I'm a thousand miles away, so I'm relying on TheMusicMan and other PCB-ers for their observations. So far it appears to be a Hot AC being programmed by someone who doesn't understand the format and/or doesn't like the format and/or is afraid that it will harm The Mothership (Eyeland One-Oh-Seex). Too cute, by half. The "seduce & tease" liner is just stupid. The "history of women" shit is just stupid. Come on, guys, get a grip!

Check back in three months and see if they've figured it out by then. It's not impossible.

Maybe in 3 months, we will be able to listen to audio of it online.

RNR, as always you know where the hole is and I am sad we were not in PC to show em how do it.
The LAST thing you wanna to is play games with your listeners. Venus in Nashville was a great example of how to assume women are just gonna listen cause it's for them. Then you put all this
cheesey fluff and garabage on the air and insult them. Play good music and cut the crap. Most women know they are female and will listen if you play good $hit. BUT, NO. Some man in a mid-life crisis has obviously stolen various playlists and screw this up. Six months it will be gone.
Two weeks the listeners will be. AND don't use the same six liners every hour.

I don't get radio at all, obviously....but why is it that now it is acceptable to launch a format with lackluster quality and expect listeners to just live with it and just know "it will get better" when the powers that be get around to it. To me it is the cart before the horsesass.

Another sign of the pathetic state of this industry. Companies with access to millions launch crap. Years ago, single owner-operators with full staffs duked it out and when someone flipped it was big news, big hype and done right. Only did it get worse if it eventually failed. Now a format flip is about as exciting as changing an air filter.

Seems like these brilliant minds would see they've potentially already lost the race before the gun is fired if you give listeners nothing to grab on to. And MM and RNR --- if they really are playing to the "seduce and tease" side of women, I swear they are a bunch....ah never the hell mind.

Has anyone heard V-100 streaming on line? I can't get the damn thing to work. Guess thats what you get when you sell ads for $1.....

Rob, I bet their strobeys are out.

How is it the 2nd day into it?

You had to ask? :D

I know I was pretty harsh. Honestly, though, even allowing for some trial and error in the coming months, there's no reason for the execution to be this poor out of the gate.

Music Man --- I wasn't meaning anything mean toward your comments. YOU are exactly right. I couldn't agree more. I was "poking" fun at the V-comments from CCENG and playing that against the "how is it the 2nd day INTO IT." Bad, attempt at childish comeback humor. My fault. I ain't never really as funny as I think I am.

How is it in the fourth or fifth day???

That's funny, my bad on misreading. I haven't listened since Thursday night, but I love how the streamer still displays the Wave 100.1 logo and header. Might wanna get on that...

I can't get over that "seduce, entice, tease and satisfy" sweeper. That might be one of the worst sweepers I've ever heard on ANY radio station, ever. Completely missing the point of the format and target audience.
