100.3 The Beat is gone!

So they changed their name, is this really going to get them out of the hole they are in? Yes the new name reflects the format better, but is the format the problem in the first place?

None of this is a surprise for me. Maybe because I go back in the day of Summit Communications. That's all Radio One is. The "V" position is a heritage position. The format has its roots on solid R&B gold with a tight rotation then expands to fit the market. Whether its Atlanta, Baltimore, Los Angeles, etc. It's just the same format that has existed since the early 80s. Maybe this is simple for me because I knew the architects. And I understand the formatics right back to the days of good 'ol selector, lol. Stations are not designed to take over a market anymore. They are designed to fit the niche for advertising. Welcome to Radio 2006.

IMO, I think the "V" positioning is tired and it would have been nice to see them come up with something original...but this is RO and radio biz today we are talking about. I hate to say it but the station sounds much better. I have been listening and the jocks sound great, especially Shirley Hayes. Musically, they sound more tight. When I heard "Radioactive" and some old skool rap last night, I was surprised. IMO, I would like to hear a few more currents. But the mix shows were a surprise. It will be interesting to see if this new direction will help RO in LA.

The 'V' is alive and well in Sacramento. V101.1 which is so similar to 98.1 KISS FM in San Francisco. Same owners, they also voicetrack a couple of their on-air personalities. Same V/O guy with the same sounding sweepers. Both stations are "Todays' R&B and Old School"

I think it may be designed for streamless listening when traveling between the two cities. From SF tune to 98.1 when the signal fades near Vacaville, switch to 101.1, for the exact same sound and format.

V101 in Sacramento is owned by Clear Channel and actually there was a V103.9 in LA many years back. It was KACE and as I recall their PD was current KKBT PD Kevin Fleming, but he may have come in later. It didn't really do that well in Southern Cal but I think it had more to do with lack of audience and poor signal as they sounded pretty good...

^^^
If KJLH had a better signal across Southern California, i wonder if their ratings would be higher. IMO, yes, their ratings would be higher. KJLH is a hot sounding station and one of the better sounding Urban ACs in the US (along with WHUR in DC).

KQLZ was the best!

Here's an interesting link: (KQLZ managed to make a killing off of only one sponsor per hour back in the day! WOW! )

http://www.kqlz.com/

To this day, the most I've enjoyed a station in this market... a spectacular arrival, great presentation, and the station had an attitude... The first several months were just an amazing time back in '89... it's too bad Scott Shannon made a fatal error and took the station away from CHR and more towards rock... he might still be here in L.A. if he had made the right adjustments.
