To Barbapapa's point..... that was then, this is NOW. Z never had a good morning show but was consistently in the 2's despite competing for much of the same audience as 96rock. All you have to do is look at the "River's" ratings to know that rock can win in this city. Dave may be making money but it's the dullest rock station around. And the one shining star, "Orff," is about to be moved to overnights. They could've launched the return of Z93, hired the RG's, filled the rock void, and actually would've made some noise.
Instead, they hire a guy who's done "guy" radio for years for a station that caters to chicks. And if they were planning on tweaking the music it's too late now! Nice!!!
Actually, Barbapapa makes a good point. Then, Z93 was only competing against 96 Rock who was trying to be a classic rock station and also jump into 99X territory. Now, there is The River and to some extent Project which plays classic rock as well. The fact that Z never had a good morning show is not why the station flopped. The River doesn't have a morning show and still has good ratings.
I don't see the fascination with this station. So far, at least 75% of the songs on the Rock 100.5 playlist can be heard on the River. The other 25% are rock power ballards on the pop charts (Nickelback, Daughtery, 3 Doors Down, etc.) and some rock leaning alternative such as the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam that were overplayed on 99X. So far, every song has been predictable, safe, and radio-friendly...BORING! As I predicted, this station is the "Fox" rock format that Cumulus uses in other markets, just under a different name. They probably would have branded it as Fox but people in Atlanta would think it was the return of oldies. At least Dave actually takes risk and plays some album music.
I also don't see the same fascination with 97.1 The River that plays these same 100 classic rock songs over and over. Why not just put those same songs on a iPod? I guess stations like this are necessary since the older generation is intimidated by new technology.
I actually enjoy many classic rock artists and have deep respect for them. But stations like these make me hate the format. 96 Rock played Freebird several times a day, The River plays Elton John almost every time I turn to them. Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time, but I can only tolerate hearing Money so many times a day. And, that's not even their best song!
