100.5: Re-gifted 96rock in a shiny new package.

They blew one thing--first song after TRG should have been "Baba O'Riley" by The Who...the first and last song played by 96 Rock.

Actually they did play that and Yes.com is showing that was the first tune played

My bad. I wasn't listening (no streaming here at work) and I thought I saw a list that didn't have that song on it.

Re: 100.5: Re-gifted 96rock in a shiny new, but weak, package.

One big difference from the old 96rock (which I miss) - I live north of Braselton, and can't get the 100.5 signal clearly. Oh, well, back to the iPod...

You do understand thatRadio is a business and yearning for the hard rock days pre-hair metal is very niche. I don't see anyone yearning for deeper cuts of Aprilwine(potential oxymoron), Montrose or the Red Rocker. That format would sound stale with in a month. Just not that vast of a catalog to pull from and again not a whole lot there to attract an audience. Perhaps you should start your own internet radio station.

Oh I'm well aware it's a business. I'm also well aware it was a business when 99x pulled their lock n load back in the day (as an example) I'm also well aware that the signs are showing that people are more willing to pay $13/month to have access to those niche formats as well as the same regurgitated pap they can hear locally....OR...go the route of mp3 players or a slacker.com model.

Then again, we are talking about corporate radio.....but, they were willing to put their top 40 station to 100k watt signal and leave the weaker signal for the rock channel. So maybe the latter is not as important right now but it has me thinking they could still try something different but on a weaker signal since they may not have to invest as much with it? That's all relative, of course. I don't know nor do I pretend to know the inner workings of radio aside from 'he who has the gold makes the rules' and if Terry Cullin' s marketing department is willing to drop $3 mill in advertising, and they believe they'll get more bang for the buck on a station that plays "Simple Man" at least three times a day, then that's where they're spending money. Not hard to understand at all. I get that. Hopefully, HD will get more widespread and will allow stations to diversify their programming. I would think that people would be willing to pop for HD components if they knew they could hear what they wanted to hear on and HD channel. That has me wondering why those stations aren't broadcasting their hd feed on the net as well (unless it's the same feed they're putting out in SD)

(Dio, Rainbow, April Wine, Zebra, deep cuts from VH, montrose, hagar, a throw in of some bands that were considered 'metal' bands in the 80's but are more hard rock).

I wonder if anyone has an old 96 Rock playlist from anywhere in the mid-80's lying around somewhere?

Even when they were playing currents, my recollection is that they were still quite heavy on "gold", doing so at the expense of recurrents. I wonder how my memory would hold up against the reality in black & white.

My only complaint so far is that they couldn't even wait an hour before playing Bad Company--an artist the River is already playing to death. If 100.5 starts up with the Fleetwood Mac/Eagles nonsense I MIGHT JUST LOSE IT!!!

Totally agree. It sounds so much better than the river already. Don't forget the river is still NEW.... ::) ???

To Barbapapa's point..... that was then, this is NOW. Z never had a good morning show but was consistently in the 2's despite competing for much of the same audience as 96rock. All you have to do is look at the "River's" ratings to know that rock can win in this city. Dave may be making money but it's the dullest rock station around. And the one shining star, "Orff," is about to be moved to overnights. They could've launched the return of Z93, hired the RG's, filled the rock void, and actually would've made some noise.

Instead, they hire a guy who's done "guy" radio for years for a station that caters to chicks. And if they were planning on tweaking the music it's too late now! Nice!!!

Actually, Barbapapa makes a good point. Then, Z93 was only competing against 96 Rock who was trying to be a classic rock station and also jump into 99X territory. Now, there is The River and to some extent Project which plays classic rock as well. The fact that Z never had a good morning show is not why the station flopped. The River doesn't have a morning show and still has good ratings.

I don't see the fascination with this station. So far, at least 75% of the songs on the Rock 100.5 playlist can be heard on the River. The other 25% are rock power ballards on the pop charts (Nickelback, Daughtery, 3 Doors Down, etc.) and some rock leaning alternative such as the Foo Fighters and Pearl Jam that were overplayed on 99X. So far, every song has been predictable, safe, and radio-friendly...BORING! As I predicted, this station is the "Fox" rock format that Cumulus uses in other markets, just under a different name. They probably would have branded it as Fox but people in Atlanta would think it was the return of oldies. At least Dave actually takes risk and plays some album music.

I also don't see the same fascination with 97.1 The River that plays these same 100 classic rock songs over and over. Why not just put those same songs on a iPod? I guess stations like this are necessary since the older generation is intimidated by new technology.

I actually enjoy many classic rock artists and have deep respect for them. But stations like these make me hate the format. 96 Rock played Freebird several times a day, The River plays Elton John almost every time I turn to them. Pink Floyd is my favorite band of all time, but I can only tolerate hearing Money so many times a day. And, that's not even their best song!

We get the point today that you are against this new station. I looked at the River's top 100 and only spotted a few songs so far played on 100.5 Based on what I have heard today and the River's Top 100 I would be surprised if more than 15 - 20% was a cross-over with the River.

Correct. Now...will 96.1 "tweak" in response by ditching their active classics & going 100% new rock? Huh? Huh? Makes too much sense? Yeah, thought so.

G

Very few tunes that I heard today would be played on the "THE NEW 97.1 The River" Its good to have a rock station that plays Rush...especially since they will be here July 22. AND to have a station to play Pink Floyd, other than the obligatory "Money" :(

I heard AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie .....dont think that will have a chance on 97.1 :p

I agree with you. They have SOME talent at Dave, but too many of their jocks are either stale or held back. I really enjoy Margo and would like to see her move to afternoons. Sully is a bit bland for me, unlike his days on 105.3. Orf is incredibley talented and needs a morning show centered around him. Don't they also have a rock guy from album 88 working there?

Dave is a decent station, but I wish they wouldn't hold back as often as they do. Maybe now with Rock100.5 they'll let lose. Maybe? ???

You know what's funny.....hearing Steve Craig promoting that eye clinic this morning and topping it off with mentioning 99x for discount. Classic. Yes, I'm well aware that it's an old ad, but the fact that it's still running is a clear indication that there wasn't much planning put in motion, even for an ad.

By afternoon, the ad was updated. They ran so many ads for them today that some must have been freebies anyway. Part of the issue was Woolfson's website direct you to a web page specific to 99x. They did not tip the client off ahead of time we the exact change, But we have seen today that no matter what they do you are going to criticize.

The new Rock 100.5 is what I miss. I loved 96Rock and am happy The Regular Guys are back. I was saddened with 96Rock was replaced by a project. Cumulus did good with this one!!! Welcome back Regular Guys!! :)

Someone from Nashville here to bug you all...sorry if this has been asked...what is going on with the call letters? What are 99.7's new calls if any? Wikepedia says 100.5 is rock and WWWQ. I didn't read every thread - I'm sure this has been posted already! Again, sorry for asking. BTW it sucks that 99X is gone...I've driven through Atlanta 1000 times and it was always my favorite.
