100.9 no longer K-Love

I remember once upon a long ago Atlanta had two stations on either side of the city with an LMA simulcasting. Perhaps that is what WYAB could do with WJXN since it looks as though a power increase is a long shot or a long time away.

Awww, why did I have to get drawn into this?

WJXN's LMA payment is WAY too expensive. As for an upgrade for WYAB.... we're "working on it" ;)

When are you NOT working on upgrades? ;D

Gunsmoke radio show gone and music playing. Station now billing itself as Jackson's more variety station 100.9. I must say that the music variety is different from what is on right now. "The Band" is telling me to turn up my radio right now. I wonder how long this incarnation will last...

Maybe it's not the permanent format, but I'll give then credit for at least trying something different. Perhaps they're bringing the Pig to Jackson?

I'm digging it. Lots of deep tracks I've never heard before with a few hits mingled in. Audio sounds good. I loved the Memphis Pig also. I used to occasionaly DX it when it was on the AM band a few years ago.

Wake me when they decide on the real format. When I listen to a station, I try to imagine what their target is. With this one I'm thinking the 50 year old male hemp demo. Hit after hit, if u know what I mean. Interesting mix but no shelf life, although Z-106 listeners might find the choice inviting.

Sadly I think I agree with you. As long as the legendary WZZQ no serious competition, most of the popular music was on AM back then, they did fine. As soon as AC, top 40 and country started to move to FM, they had to become more "commercial" and the writing was on the wall. If I remember correctly 94.7 tried running some album cuts at night, so did 101.7 (Rock 102) 1590 AM, and 98.7 (98 Rock) and even Z-106 in the early days, but it didn't last. It was only a matter of time before the consultants and bean counters turned on the cookie cutter. I've noticed that other stations tend to sound better right before a format change. As a rule of thumb, If a station plays music that is too cool, look for a format change within a few days.

I agree with gritsandeggs (now I wish I had some this morning--quite hungry lol!). I get the feeling that this isn't the permanent format. Even if it were, the music is too unfamiliar for it to be commercially viable (if it is to be a commercial station). Not saying that a AAA format shouldn't be programmed here, but you still need some familiarity with the songs for people to listen. Given that there is a gaping hole for current rock, that's the direction they need to go in.

I highly doubt this will be permanent, unless they want to reach the coveted demo of nursing home patients and the deceased.

This is a place holder until someone enters an LMA with Flinn Broadcasting for the station. The format has been used time and time again on various Flinn owned stations in between LMA's.

If I remember correctly 100.9 ran commercial free country for a few weeks while they were between formats. It was running an urban format but I don't remember what they called it. It was pulled off the air and played commercial free country for a while before becoming K-Love.

It was urban AC under the name Magic 100.9 for a few years. They lost their lease when On Top (which owned then-Hot 97.7 at the time) couldn't pay the rent. WJXN did go country for about a week or two before going K-Love.

So is the station for sale, are they looking for an LMA, or are the owners gonna run it and make a dent in the market. Guess one needs to ask if they even have a change to win in the market???? So many question with so few answers.

Flinn typically LMAs the stations he owns outside of Memphis and including some in market also. LMA the station and play what you want on it. The music that you hear now is just to keep something on until a new LMA is set up.

I wonder what the format could be? Since Jack FM or Rock 93.9 are gone, something similar would come to mind. Maybe a news/talk FM or an AM on FM simulcast? Any guesses? I know it won't happen, but I'm happy with an AAA or album based format.
