101.1 The Beat Phoenix Completes Signal Upgrade

KAJM was at somepoint the Rhythmic Hot AC station pattern after KHHT in Los Angeles. Only thing is the station leans towards Oldies which is geared after latina women. AZ doesnt have a strong african population to support a Urban AC station like the ones in the midwest and south. KAJM is more focused and its fine where it is.

I hear you on that, but those same cities in the midwest and south may only have about 4% or less mexican population. However, they do have their regional mexican station there..that's what I don't understand.

I also think 101.1 should stay strickly old school hiphop. Their rating went down from a low .9 to .6 after their change. Why play music that 98.3 , 101.5, 104.7, 90.7, and 97.5...whew!! is already playing....LOL ::)

Yeah Regional Mexican stations are growing in the midwest. Kansas City has 4 on the AM. Plus low power Univision KUKC LP and soon on air St. Joseph based low power KSJO which will carry Telemundo on D3. Entercom and Apline have LMA's running those stations 1250 AM and 1160 AM. The Hispanic owners pay Entercom and Apline to run their programs. Makes sense seeing nothing is on the air on AM but News, Religous, Sports and Country. Davidson Media owns 1340 AM and 1480AM. Cost of living is very cheap so thats why hispanics are moving there. From what I seen Oklahoma City and Wichita is growing the most.

Very good question, I noticed that decrease too....OUCH! However, the new signal will get them up higher, and I predict they will tie Mega, which means they'll most likely take some of Power's share, and maybe a small share of a couple others, but not much. They want to be branded as the valley's Pure Hip Hop station, which is something the others don't do (even though Power tries to appeal that way, they just don't pull it off playing Pop). If they are happy with a projected 1.5 share average, then carry on. If not, time to flip formats.

I heard they are keeping 99.3 for west coverage

Which doesn't make sense. The new 101.1 signal is best on the west side. 99.3 pretty much overlaps 101.1's new signal in most of the 99.3 coverage area.

101.1 and 104.3 are niche players with their signals. 101.1 is totally co-opted by the dozen or so other stations playing some of their music and there is no need to even mention the blowtorch 95.5 signal which took 104.3's format away.

May be time for a new direction with one or both signals. The issue with flipping to the glaring hole in the market, Alternative, is that again the rug could easily be taken from under them when a bigger signal goes to the format which will probably happen sooner or later given the success of the format when it's executed as it is intended to be in similar sized markets such as Denver, San Diego, Kansas City and more.

That leaves other formats such as ......... So yeah maybe they'll keep doing what they're doing.

The difference is in the fact that "new" Hispanic communities tend to prefer the Regional Mexican format overwhelmingly over any other Spanish language format, while African American communities have no single format that attracts nearly every listener.

I hear many African Americans wanting an Urban AC format or complaining about the lack of one. The younger population probably tends to favor a hiphop/dance format . However, many young African Americans also embrace urban AC.

I've never been asked to play any Urban AC songs.....

If none are played here locally on any station. I would almost expect that. Kids only request the songs they are familiar with. If nobody plays those songs on the radio it won't be that popular. Also, that genre of music has always been popular even among other demos.

Students in my class at EVIT in Mesa, really like the format that 101.1 has evolved into, you're talking 17-19 year olds liking the mix of hip hop more than 98.3. On The Goldmine, we play the hip hop mega hits, but that's about it, we're straight top 40, i think 37 of the top 40 billboard hits are on The Goldmine, but hats off to The Beat, they are taking on Power and people seem to be taking notice

But Steve, that is far from Urban AC. I don't think there is enough material out there to support an Urban AC format. Even Usher and Chris Brown are shifting to Pop / Dance. Urban as a whole is becoming stale.
Back to urban ac LOL!!

WOW!! not enough material..lol have you listened to WBLS before? Have you heard of Neosoulcafe radio online. Material isn't the problem...If you keep on it there is an underground resurgence of soul going on its just not marketed...Maxwell, Eryka Badu, Marsha Ambrosius,Raphael Saadiq, Eric Roberson. This is just a few that are selling records, but no radio here in AZ

Those artists are great, however I haven't heard anything from them recently. Either such a format would have a Very High rotation, or it would be yet another station playing mainly Gold titles

Are you serious?? The only one that doesn't have a new album is ERYKA there.

Just shows how low on the radar they are then. I play all sorts of gigs and such requests have yet to be mentioned. Which is also a good indication radio would have trouble getting ratings playing them.

Seems to be no problem in other cities...I think its an exposure problem
