101.1 WIIN

These are allegedly the new calls. As is WYNY for WXRP in New York. Although the WYNY have been traditionally country. So there is speculation that Randy might try a country outlet in NYC. But doubtful. And as we all know, Randy might just be punking everybody and going in a completely different direction. Me thinks the latter.

I'm sure it'll have to be WIIN-FM since those calls are parked on AM station here in Jackson, MS. Would Merlin have to pay and/or seek permission to use those calls?

Could be the same route they'd need to take if they wanted the WYNY calls - they're currently assigned to an AM station in suburban NY, which has not yet signed on. I'm sure they'd rather just buy the calls outright rather than assign an "-FM" to them, and one would think the same case is such for WIIN.

@Word: Well, if Kiefer Sutherland was the voiceover for the old "Blink 102.7" in New York... anything's possible.

In its waning years, WYNY was a country station, from roughly 1979-1987 WYNY was a legendary full-service/AC station. I'm sure the WYNY (or WIIN) call letters could be had for a price. Why fret about -FM? You only have to mention that once an hour and can bury that little technicality in the middle of the :52 stopset if you thinl anyone but us radio geeks will notice.

Anthony Weiner will be in charge of the New Energy 97.9!!

While they're at it, they can bring Ron Howard into the mix - then, you'll have "Opie and Anthony" back on the radio! ::)

I think that permission and/or compensation is required from the existing stations even if just a '-FM' suffix is requested.

Likely Merlin Media will just buy the calls outright because both stations (Ridgeland, Mississippi and Middletown, New York) are under-utilized. WIIN was a silent station until just this week (June 22nd) when the station began a simulcast of Country 96.3 WUSJ Meridian, Mississippi.

Great timing. Might just need a little more $$ for the calls, because it is "heritage" and "marketing costs" ;)

Now there are rumbles that the new 101.1 will be a 'female friendly' talker, though not with Kathy & Judy. To me, this doesn't sound good. Perhaps my car presets may not need to be updated after all.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

As an outside observer, it's fun to watch Randy through Rumor Balls in the air and watch people try to jump up and catch them. :D

The news or news/talk or information format rumors seem pretty solid to me, given the hiring of news professionals in both markets.

But my gut tells me the "female oriented talk" thing is something Randy threw out there just to play with people's heads.
