101.7 96.1 95.9 THE big switch

Had a friend check 96.1 also, they are running on low power getting ready for the move. You have to get past Dorchester on 78 going toward Charleston to hear their signal right now.

Good read. I do get a kick outta the fact that they have 3 of the top stations in the market. Depending on how you break down the demos it always seems that Chuck & Star come up 1 and 2, with B 92 right behind them. There is somthing to be said about a local radio company that invests in its product, and in this case it translates to #1s and $$$.

With the new stick, how much better can they do?

I live in suburban Charleston (10 miles northwest of downtown) and work at home. I have an outdoor FM antenna, aimed right at WKZQ's 96.1 tower in Garden City (the same tower used by WMYB, WAVF and WWXM). While working on my computer this morning, I had WKZQ 101.7 playing on my stereo receiver, and the whole time the reception was crystal-clear stereo. (That, again, was their 37,000-watt signal from their 101.7 tower 9 miles northeast of Conway, 97.33 miles from me.) After they switched to 96.1, transmitting an 8,500-watt signal from Garden City, I found that I could not hear WKZQ at all - nothing. And that, even though their 96.1 tower in Garden City is 20.2 miles closer to me than the now-retired 101.7 tower. So much for all of their on-air puffery and bravado about "louder" and "better". In contrast, I receive WAVF (100,000 watts), WMYB (94,000 watts) and WWXM (100,000 watts) clear as a whistle.

And that inability to hear WKZQ 96.1 was not due to interference from other stations - the frequency was quiet. 95.9 is not on the air yet in Charleston, so there is not yet co-channel interference from it. The reason is that 8,500-watt signal: Weak as water. I expect some listeners in North Myrtle Beach and Little River will notice a negative difference too.

I've updated Wikipedia to reflect the changes. I didn't know the ERP or HAAT, or for that matter, the coordinates, of Chuck. I only knew ERP for WKZQ. If someone else can find these it would be appreciated.

WAVF's 101.7 ERP remains as at 96.1, 100,000 watts. Same transmitter tower too, on Venning Road in central Mount Pleasant. Check out radio-locator.com or fcc.gov, neither of which yet fully reflect the WKZQ/WAVF changes.

I listened to CHUCK 101.7 for about an hour and I heard them identify WKZQ twice. It was in between commercials and 2 seconds long with a fast talking voice that you would hear in one of those 1-800# commercials when time is running out and the voice speeds up to get everything in.

Yes, they made the switch, at 10am today. Chuck FM goes to 101.7 (the stronger signal), while WKZQ moves to the much weaker 96.1 signal (barely heard even by my Grundig S350, which picked up the 101.7 crystal clear most of the time on James Island, just south of Charleston).

95.9 will sign on later on in the year, with a new format, perhaps a reincarnation of "96 Wave," or an oldies station, among other choices.

It is a gold mine for people looking for stations on 95.9, 96.1, and 96.3, as I've already today have picked up 96.3, the country station from Morehead City, NC well. Before long, you may be able to hear Atlanta, Jacksonville, Charlotte, Raleigh, or WKZQ on 96.1 (before 95.9 goes on air).

You guys may be able to hear WQZY from Dublin, GA on 95.9.

A few minutes ago, out here in the area of the intersection of Ashley Phosphate/Dorchester Roads, I tried 96.1 WKZQ again, and now have it coming in loud and mostly clear on my home stereo. At 101.7 their transmitter elements were 607 ft above sea level, and at 96.1 they are 871 ft above sea level. That helps, plus the small advantage of 96.1 having a longer wavelength than 101.7. Still a shame, though, that Next Media sold 101.7 to Apex, when they could have taken WKZQ to 100,000 watts at 101.7.

so now KZQ comes in in Charleston too? Im confused and havent gone out to the truck to listen yet. im lazy and have enuff beer for right now.

Chuck 101.7 sounds clear in the Elloree/Santee area as well as pretty good in Orangeburg. WKZQ 96.1 didn't have any signal in any of the three locations but 101.7 really never did either when they were in MB. I turned off our 96.3 translator in Elloree to listen for 96.1 for a few min but still no signal. I tied a receiver to our 200 foot tower while I had the translator and transmitter cut off and could hear WKZQ good then but that was cheating. 101.7 in Charleston is much stronger here than 96.1 was when it was in Charleston.

Good to hear Gatekeeper. I figured WAVF would have a listenable signal in Orangeburg. As for Pelion (22 miles southwest of Columbia), the WAVF signal is vague and spotty as to be expected. As for KZQ, not a solid chance obviously. The best I got from turning the outdoor antenna was the rock station from Atlanta (Project 96-1).
