101.7 Format Speculations....

Rather than listen to the bleeding hearts at the times reporter who would like us to believe it's a total shock to the community that someone dare more WJER...I figured we might as well move on with our lives....Somebody has to. So let the fun begin. Please give us your top 3 format choices for what you think will land on 101.7.

I'll start:

1. Country
2. Country
3. Country

If they don't i'll be disappointed. All the work to acquire and move the signal will be wasted if they go CHR/AC/Oldies.

I'm hearing more noise that a certain other station will indeed drop the oldies sometime soon. However, I still think country is the top choice for 101.7 - I saw that hole in the market when I first moved here 3 years ago.

1. Country
2. Light AC
3. Oldies

Despite the web site, I will collectively eat the shorts of Gabe Hobbs', Keith Kennedy, and Kevin Metheny - sort of a Boxers' Buffet, if you will - if you hear even one freakin' Keith Urban song on the new 101.7 FM.

Just a gut - and my gut IS rather large - feeling :)

This is funny watching all the speculation about the former JER's format. When are all of you going to wake up and realize that Keith Kennedy is playing games with you again. Keith loves this kind of stuff. He's a master at it. I wouldn't be surprised if he set this all up himself to watch you guys go into a tizzy! Heres a piece of advice......chill out.....sit down drink a glass of wine or have a beer and just wait till they make a format change. What is going to happen will happen no matter what the speculation. Kudos to you Keith.......you pulled another fast one on em...............Merry Christmas!

And recent visitors to the Mighty Blog will notice we've dialed back a bit.

I'm gonna stop worrying 'bout it and tune on the radio in a few days...I think all the "possibilities" are out there.

Browncow are you jealous of Keith? Sure does sound that way.

Sounds like you have way to much time on your hands as well. I'm not sure how. Gary has you airing 33-43 minutes of spots PER HOUR on the am now. Sounds like you've got spots to write and CART up.

Is it for certain the Clear Channel is selling WJER 1450 AM back to Gary Petricola? If so, does anyone know what price Gary is paying to get the AM back? And is it just Gary doing the buyback of 1450 AM? If not, who else is involved? Keeping in mind the amount that Clear Channel paid for BOTH WJERs ($3.6 million, I believe), I wonder how much Clear Channel recouped over the last few years since the original deal.

Finally, all of the speculation and chit chat on MySpace, this board, OMW, and other places will end tomorrow regarding 101.7's format. Whatever the format is, Gary Petricola will be left to steer WJER AM 1450. That is such a tough challenge. That station just doesn't go that far. While WJER has been embedded into the fabric of the community, much like WHBC in Canton, at least 1480 AM in Canton can be heard quite well at night.

I disagree with the poster who thought that Keith has "too much time on his hands" for the 101.7 stunt. Rather, shouldn't he be... well... CREDITED for throwing 15 balls in the air? It's the perfect thing to do - it keeps the market guessing, and should be intimidating, especially for 94.1, which didn't know yet if there was a "Star" or a "Bull" coming to 101.7...

It's right out of the John Gorman playbook (minus the 15 days or so of all-Beatles records). As for the websites... CC has them all centralized now, and can take down either the "Bull" or "Star" website and redirect the URL to whatever WHOF becomes.

Regardless, Keith deserves a lot of credit. When people moan about creativity in radio being dead, WHOF comes along. And people will tune in to hear the station's launch NOW, just to hear what it became...

Nate,
You are absolutely right. I would love to hear what happens. I wish I could pick up the station in Steubenville.

Just a note, and a tease, and preview...based on stuff the folks at Freedom Avenue don't even know we know yet (heh!):

101.7 won't light up in Canton on the 27th.

Think "just after the first of the year", likely within a week or so of January 2nd. There will be a period of time where WJER-FM lights up the AUX stick at the studio on Boulevard to direct people to 1450.

Don't know how long, but it sounds like more than a day or two, and with 101.7 not going on before the first of the year from 22nd and Whipple, maybe most of the coming week.

As far as I know, the current WJER-FM feed from the main stick down there still goes away tonight in about 30 minutes or so. The other stuff is caused by logistics, it appears.

We'll explain on OMW, tomorrow, and if I'm still up at midnight, I'll try to listen...

Hey Ohio Radio man...glad to know I'm not the only one from Jimm The Greeks hometown surfing this board. From time to time 101.7 has been aduable in our neck of the woods. Yep I know the stick will be moved north a tad but we may be able to check out "The Bull" "Star" or whatever it may be. Hey here's another idea... how 'bout oldies " WIN(W) Wonderfull-FM, or Q 10(1.7)?

Just a couple of things:

Our guess last night was incorrect, they are still running the loop on the main 101.7 signal (out of Strasburg). I hear they CAN switch it to the AUX transmitter when the folks from Freedom Avenue come down to get the equipment, but it doesn't sound like they're gonna run it long - or maybe not even at all on the AUX transmitter (at the WJER studios).

I'd be very surprised, for example, if Mr. Petricola and company run any signal that has to legal ID as WHOF...which would start in just under 24 hours from now, when those calls kick in. And it wouldn't appear the current loop has much staying power, as it were.

My guess - somewhere between now and next midnight, the thing goes dark entirely. 101.7 gets resurrected as a Canton signal sometime within a day or three of January 8th.

Tref - I don't think you'll get it down there, but I could be wrong.

I posted, on my last item about this, a buncha reasons country still could be a possibility on the new stick.

Re: TomSullivan - you're right - Keith is playing games with us, but some of us love it just as much as he does! It's fun guessing what he has up his sleeve, and I agree with Nathan, it helps bring some creativity back into radio.

Dear John,

Now if that creativity could be transfered to what is being put on the air, I would agree with you. Until that happens however, Northeast ohio radio is a wasteland. NUFF SAID..........now back to the head games......LOL

I'm only here part time, as I am a student at the University of Dayton.
I usually have to deal with WORD out of Pittsburgh.

When WGCL switched to WNCX, John Gorman and company played (I think) two days (48 hours) worth of Beatles during the transition.
Not 15 days! Shheesh!

This was also one of the first (1986) episodes of "stunting" between formats. Some years later, it was common for stations to really get crazy for a couple of days between formats. The Beatles was at least listenable. How about the station (I forget where) that became "Polka 102" (or whatever) for a few days between formats playing 100% polka music. Holy ratings-killer!

FYI

I was running though Wintersville up near Krogers around 645am this morning heading to the office and I heard it on the car radio. It wasn't solid, but audable. ::)
