101.9 Is Now WEMP

If 1050 WEPN wanted to become WHN they could not get them back. WJKW-TV in Cleveland was able to find a loophole to reclaim WJW-TV in 1985 Same goes for 930 KKHJ in Los Angeles which was able to reclaim KHJ in 2000

Interestingly enough, Storer was behind both WMGM's call letters change back to WHN after a 15 year absence, and WJKW-TV/8's reclamation of the WJW calls.

WJW-TV/8 became WJKW in 1977 after Storer sold off WJW/850 to then-Cleveland Browns owners Art Modell and Al Lerner, but kept the TV station. A condition of that sale was, the next time the AM station would be sold, Storer would reclaim the WJW calls, and the AM station would need to change calls.

That happened in June of 1985 when Lerner & Modell sold WJW-AM to buy WWWE/1100, sold WJW-AM over to Booth Broadcasting (who had to change the calls to WRMR), and Storer rechristened WJKW as WJW-TV/8. When the Fox Television Stations Group bought WJW-TV in 1997, the "-TV" suffix was dropped completely.

As for KKHJ, because it was a Spanish-language station, they successfully petitioned the FCC to revert back to KHJ, with their reasoning being that speaking out the "K - K" letters in Spanish sounded like a vulgar term for fecal matter, so the TOH IDs had to be given in English. That worked in the eyes of the FCC.

WGH/1310 in Newport News, Virginia, also restored their three-letter callsign not once, but two times: first, in 1985 after two years as WNSY (WGH-FM was also WNSY-FM), and in 2003 after a year as WCMS (WGH-FM was unaffected that time).

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned how they are pitching up the music. Some songs it is subtle and barely noticeable, but some are so pitched up that it is ridiculous.

That may or may not stop a low-power station from ID-ing as "WNBC" (with a lift on the "N" ::) ). Remember the low-power TV station that ID-ed itself as "WKRP", even though its legal callsign was W25SomethingOrOther?

I did, I noticed almost immediately after tuning in- "Two Princes" by the Spin Doctors being the biggest offender.

Well, 101.9's now listed on Yes.com under their new call letters:

As far as the FCC is concerned, any station can call themselves anything they want (no "foul" language) as long as they ID themselves "as close to the top of the hour".
There were stations calling themselves "WMIX". Only one station was legally assigned the call letters, and it weren't them.

Our "WSRQ-FM" legal call is W295BH.

The only problems I've seen is when Jacor "servicemarked" the "The Power Pig".
Although that was over 20 years ago and they have since stopped using it over 15 years ago, I wonder how much of a problem somebody would legally have by resurrecting it.

WHTZ did not trademark "Z100". Portland, Oregon jumped on the "Z" bandwagon soon after WHTZ went on the air..

I'm wondering why Mediabase put them on the Hot AC panel ???

WEMP sounds very much like a Hot AC station from around 2002 or so, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Ironically "101.9 FM New" is playing hardly any "new" music.

So is it a stunt or isn't it? Huh

In the true radio programming tradition of the word "stunt"......NO!

This is a way to fill the frequency, sell a few spots, and possibly attract a percentage of your target audience for the ultimate "new," probably news/talk, format when it is ready to roll out.

The most likely non-radio geek types to discover the station now are those who hit "scan" on their car radios and land on some music they like and stick around. They may do the same thing when the real new format is running, and stick around for good.

But, most of the new potential audience will be driven to add the station to their pre-sets by advertising, promotion and word of mouth buzz, once the new long-term format hits the air.

I was actually thinking basically the same thing -- it sounds a lot like PLJ a decade ago, from what little I've heard. Or what I imagine PLJ sounded like a decade or so ago.

Remember how I posted 101.9's ten "top songs" per Yes.com around this time yesterday?

I just took a look again today... and, wow - the list has dramatically changed: seven new songs enter their "top ten". Of the three holdovers, one of them went to number one, and one of them actually remained at number three! True, this may not be their final primary format... but it's fun to speculate... Here is the new list:

1. Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me (up from 4)
2. Jesus Jones - Right Here, Right Now
3. Three Doors Down - Kryptonite (flat)
4. INXS - Need You Tonight
5. Tears For Fears - Head Over Heels
6. Santana with Rob Thomas - Smooth
7. REO Speedwagon - Take It On The Run
8. Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
9. Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
10. Blind Melon - No Rain (down from 7)

As for the seven songs that were dismissed from the top 10, here are their current rankings as of this morning:

U2 - With Or Without You: 8 to 11
Sugar Ray - Someday: 2 to 13
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A.: 1 to 15
Jimmy Eat World - The Middle: 9 to 22
Tonic - If You Could Only See: 5 to 25
Robert Plant - Addicted To Love: 10 to 28
Duncan Sheik - Barely Breathing: 6 to 56

"Top Songs" are songs that get the most airplay over 7 days? Too bad it does not show number of spins.

Perhaps it's time to move it along.. This "genious" of programming has much to prove. He has taken a station off the air which was continually gaining..and replaced it with what?? All news FM..ok perhaps some potential.. but far from AM all news moved to FM (WTOP). News/talk.. aka right wing talk (Old(er) demographic)..not a good idea. A full service a/c..aimed at women..lol

@mikerock: I believe someone mentioned that WRXP/WEMP is listed in Mediabase... Don't they list the number of song spins per week?

Anyway, here's 101.9's top 10 songs as of today... It appears as if they've gone on an Eddie Money binge, as two of his songs suddenly appear on the top 5! Stevie Nicks also comes out of nowhere to take the top spot... Plus, songs that previously showed up in the top 10 from Three Doors Down and Bruce Springsteen have returned... Clearly, they're a work in progress on both sides of the programming (music and news) coin... The bottom half of this top ten list actually might resemble the previous format on 101.9...

1. Stevie Nicks - Edge Of Seventeen
2. Tom Cochrane - Life Is A Highway
3. Eddie Money - Take Me Home Tonight
4. Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me
5. Eddie Money - Baby Hold On
6. Three Doors Down - Kryptonite
7. Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A.
8. Stone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love Song
9. Spin Doctors - Two Princes
10. Soul Asylum - Runaway Train

I see no way to register so I can login at that site.
