101.9 is now...

Mmm, remarkable. There whe going again. If the station is programmed as KROCK in there heydays, maybe it becomes a success.

Audio is terrible b.t.w. Distortion all over the place!

From Randy Michaels last summer: “I’ve long had a nostalgic love affair with the big AM stations known for the format, and today – as music moves to the iPod – it’s time for spoken word to move to FM.”

Guessing it wasn't time.

CBS isn't stupid, there's a reason 2 of their stations were kept in the format for all these years.

How many of us are now entitled to tell you talk-radio fanatics "I TOLD YOU SO" !!

There's still plenty of room for a properly programmed new rock station to succeed in the Big Apple. Let's just hope that it's done properly this time around, with plenty of street-wise local edge and flare.

No more burnt-out classic rock mixed in with the current stuff this time around, please!!

Waiting for the "What a huge opportunity this was to bring the EDM (Electronic Dance Movement) to a full signal in NYC!" posts...

Here's what Randy reportedly had to say (courtesy Radio Ink)-

“Effective immediately, Alternative is back on the air in New York as New Rock 101.9 and Adult Hits are on the air in Chicago as i101. It was a difficult decision to make, but after a year of minimal audience engagement, coupled with the format’s inherent expense, I felt it was time to make a change.” stated Randy Michaels, CEO of Merlin Media. “I’d like to thank the people who poured their heart and soul into the effort and I wish them all the best.”

Considering RXP did way better than FM News ever did, it's a smart decision for Merlin to bring back alternative rock. Hopefully they bring back some of the RXP staff. I just feel bad for all the FM News staff that will be losing their jobs, especially the staff that left 1010 WINS for this false promise.

I guess that this means FM won't be turning into all news/talk soon.

The radio-info front page mentions the meetings in NY and Chi but so far no mention of format change.

If you're keeping track, Radio Insight [EDIT]
picked up on the domain registration yesterday and posted the simultaneous flips first.

All Access was second on the twitter feed, but they got the story wrong. They announced that Chicago and New York flipped alternative and then pushed a correction 10 minutes later that Chicago was Adult Hits with the Merlin press release.

Radio-Info must be napping this morning.

Fishbowl NY, who crowed last night that 101.9 was moving News Talk is also a no-show so far.

Here's why I think they went to modern rock here. In Chicago, they bought the channel 6/87.7 frequency and made that a modern rock outlet. In it's first full month or two it's already near a 2.0 in ratings. That's a lot better than the past year at 101.9 (or 101.1 in Chicago).

Having Fun and Goyte top the Billboard singles charts recently must have also helped a bit.

"New Rock, New York"....took some real programming smarts to come up with that slogan, but I guess it works as a placeholder.

They should just buy the RXP intellectual property from Emmis and get the WRXP calls. That station did fine.

I wonder if the RXP name is tainted though? Maybe it'd be for the best to not go after the branding/calls ;)

:D ;D
It's about time, very happy about this! Hopefully it is done right, like Radio 1045 in Philly. Am sorry however for the folks at FM News who lost their jobs.

There's no question that there's a format hole here.

Time will tell if it's a hole that translates into billings.

Good luck.
