101 CBS FM

count it!! I was at the Summer Blast-Off down at Coney Island - and one of the live acts was SMASH MOUTH!! Ugh!! and Taylor Dayne was another - sad thing....years ago, these acts would not have even had a CHANCE to get in on it - it would have been acts like The Regents and John Kuse and the Excellents - sad.... :(

Not if you were 20 or so in the '90s and think it's great to hear "All Star" again.

It seems WCBS FM in New York is going a little bit deeper than KRTH in Los Angeles is!

Absolutely.

KRTH averages 350 different songs in a week, while WCBS-FM does 550.

Well, I guess if the Regents were to "play" an event in NY last week, it would have probably been more appropriate to appear at the 135th birthday of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Andreajesus - I think you and I are just a few years apart in age, but the audience that "matters" to keep CBS-FM on the top of the ratings and profit in 2018 is not "ole folkz" like ME. Then again, you, Scott Shannon and BigA may still really be in the perpetual under 33-1/3 magic demo. Just happens to be I still act like a kid (at least at heart, maybe?) I don't want to ever grow up. Seriously, most people about sixty are not likely to hoof it out to Coney Island to kick off the unofficial start to Summer. I think it is cool that you did.

The groups/artists that played were all about fun and drawing a medium-sized crowd. CBS-FM is doing E X A C T L Y what it should be to fill the perfect niche in NYC that allows them to be as popular as ever with the age group they need to be entertaining and gearing their marketing. We just ain't in the demo. You saw the crowd. It was a mixture of people, with some well over 50. What, maybe 5-7%? The majority of the audience was 35-50. And, as I see more and more at classic rock/hits events, a large number of those under 30 like going to these shows because it gives them a brief glance into what the older crowd is doing or they grew up with their parents music, but they have their own music and music sources and, in many of those cases, CBS-FM is not part usually a large part of that. The exposure to CBS-FM will help build the audience as those folks add a few birthdays.

I have not posted here in a year or so..

but I Think it was a HUGE mistake to take the show out to brooklyn for the blast off.

Not only do you tick off all the loyal NJ listeners...but most NY people are already IN NJ ready for the weekend as per tradition.
Going by photos..it looks like they only got about 200 people out there, tops. and about half of those might have been 'VIP' contest winners. and it looked like the other half arrived after 7:30.

The split off kickoff speech was also VERY weird. for a Local guy, Causi didn't have too many memories. he just kept on rattling off famous people and places. and then broadway came in, sounding even livelier, but mentioning the places in Jersey that got screwed over this time. it all came off very disjointed. Add to that, bad audio issues throughout the entire show.

I think the real reason they moved is because nash fm out bid them for the space. but that was just my speculation. nash seemed to be out there from 11-3...so they also may not have wanted to share space with competitors..

I will still be supporting cbs fm wherever and whenever I can. but in this instance, I think it was a mis calculation on their part.

I thought WCBS also did a remote in the Long Branch area over the wknd. I know Big Joe Henry at NJ101.5 does regular remotes in Point Pleasant. So it's not like Jersey gets ignored. The big issue over the wknd was the weather.

coney island baby - excellents
the clock - contenders
imagination - quotations
gloria - vito and the salutations
pizza pie - norm fox
bells of rosarita - admirations
high on a hill - scott english
oh rosemarie - facinators
the bells - van dykes
alone and broken hearted - four jays
whenever a teenager cries - reperata and the del rons
and hundreds more

one played every hour on cbs-fm in the 70's, jingle was doo wop gold. cau-fm never played doo wop gold. they sound as good today as they did on cbs-fm 70's era.

In the 70s, those songs were on average 20 years old. That is equivalent to playing songs from the 90s now.

I don't know too many people from my part of Brooklyn who traditionally strand themselves, so to speak, in New Jersey.

When they were together on 95.5, Scott & Todd blasted off from the Jersey Shore. Mr. Shannon continued that tradition after he moved to 'CBS-FM—until this year, apparently. Mr. Pettengill did, however, hold the 2018 PLJ "Summer Kick Off" from Point Pleasant Beach.

If anyone is the the range of WMGK HD2, give them a try, I think they are the best thing on the airwaves if you like 50-60 early 70's oldies. Like I said, they do not stream, so spend some bucks and buy an HD radio lol

Wouldn't you agree most listeners to oldie formats would rather hear a broad variety of music, instead of hearing sugar pie honey bunch every day wouldn't do the freddie be more refreshing. I still think PD's have it wrong, listeners want more variety not the same stale repetition. I know a broad format 55 to 85 year span would have huge numbers but everyone thinks listeners my age don't spend like the young people, I don't BUY (PUN) it, I spend as much, maybe even more then the youngsters, and so do many of my friends.

Still love "I Can't Help Myself" never mind hearing it; BUT if I never have to even think about Freddy and the Dreamers I will be fine; and I did like "I'm Telling You Now" when it was out but since then it's a song that is a stiff so, no, it would not be refreshing to hear it or "Do the Freddie" (a bonafide stiff)

WDRC-FM Hartford's HD2 is very deep as well. If you like songs that peaked in the 20s on Billboard, you'll hear a lot of them. Like WMGK, no streaming, so book yourself a hotel room in the Hartford area (preferably south of the city) for a couple of days and bring your radio!

Thanks for the tip, if I can hear WMGK tunes like this I'll be there....Gloria-Them, It's my Life-Animals, Don't worry baby-Beach Boys, Summer Samba-Wunderlick, I want to hold you hand-Beatles...

No, no I wouldn't agree. PDs have their jobs on the line. They have data that backs them up--repeatable, scientifically valid data. So what you may buy, or not, is not relevant, honestly.

And it's not how much he buys, but whether he switches brands easily enough to make it worth advertisers' money to reach him. A 22-year-old who flips between cola brands and flavors of the month is easier to persuade to try Coke's new Ginger Lime flavor than a 65-year-old who's been drinking only Diet Coke for the past 30 years is. And the older, wiser consumers who no longer drink Coke or Pepsi but instead have switched to supermarket house brands are of no use to the advertiser at all.

If the older listeners have so much money to spend, subscribe to Sirus. $15 a month won't break you, and you can hear 50s on 5 all day.

Come to Connecticut and you'll hear Even the Bad Times Are Good -- The Tremeloes, Mind Body and Soul -- Flaming Ember, and Forever Came Today -- The Supremes, along with all the aforementioned.

The lead singer of The Regents died last fall. He was the only original member, so I doubt you'd see them now.

that's true - and since i had seen them......i was also trying to make a point about the difference between CBSFM today and 101 yesterday.....
