1010, 1470 IN BIDDING WAR FOR BRANTLY?

I've been out of town for about 10 days, which is why I did not report this earlier. First of all, 1010 AM is going back to the sports format. The week before last, Scott Brantly was in to talk to Lou and the programming guys. As he left, I also left to go to a meeting. I heard him on the phone tell someone that he had just discussed going on the air on 1010. The kicker is that he mentioned that he thinks that 1470 may also want him, but all things being equal, he'd rather go with CBS. So it's looking like Bruce Madorri of 1470 and CBS will be, or are, in a bidding war of sorts for Brantly's services. Except for one thing: someone fairly high up in the company who is outside the programming division confirmed that he heard that we definitely have an interest, and he then stated that if CBS wants him, there is no way that we will let 1470 get Brantly. He ended by saying that, in all likelihood, 1470's interest will be a waste of time and a heartbreaker for them, and will merely raise the price that CBS ends up paying. I agree, there is no way that Lou and CBS could be outbid by Madorri and 1470, which would be TOTALLY HUMILIATING to CBS. If what I heard was true, and I have no reason to believe othewise, Brantly will be on 1010 no matter what 1470 does. If he ends up on 1470, Lou will look like a fool to the broadcast world, and 1010 will have an embarrassing start to its sports programming. Stay tuned.

Scot needs something to do. He'll take the first check he can secure, plus his ego is pretty damn bruised after being shoved out of the Gators booth, 1010 blowing up and then getting the boot from the Bucs. He's been talking about 1470 since the Super Bowl, but they seem reluctant to make something come together. Bruce Maduri is always reluctant to actually spend money. As for 1010, what would be different this time about them doing sports? Another crap effort is probably on the way. I guess they figure that taking a check from Hooters on putting the girls back on the air and building a small show around Scot can make them a few bucks while keeping the expense line low.The bottom line is, the full fledged true competitor for WDAE is nowhere in our future.

Do you realize that 620's rating are out of this world? Do you realize that even 1470's ratings are way up? There is a huge audience out there to take. When one sports station has so much of the audience, there is a huge opportunity available, especially when you consider that 1470 is so weak and unable to capitalize on the circumstance.

Once again, we have a case of someone in this market who'd do anything to avoid having to work forBruce Maduri, even if it means going back to the people who fired him. ::) Doesn't anybody in this town have a nice thing to say about Genesis? Perhaps Maduri could offer to simulcast Brantley on 1040 once Hannity goes away. "When one sports station has so much of the audience, there is a huge opportunity available, especially when you consider that 1470 is so weak and unable to capitalize on the circumstance."1010 couldn't capitalize on the opportunity in six years as a sports station (The Team, the Asylum or Ayslum as it was spelled on the website, and ESPN). What makes now any different? The station still has the same narrow signal pattern that throws more juice into Lake Wales than Land O' Lakes. The ownership missed a chance to send more signal NW in the daytime (New Tampa, Carrollwood, Odessa, Dunedin, Tarpon, New Port Richey, etc.) by not applying for a CP after 1010 in the Panhandle went dark. Now another station has applied for the frequency and that may foreclose the window for good. By the way, here are 1010's format flips over the past 15 years:1988-1993 Classic Country1993-1999 FM-style talk with Tom Leykis and Don & Mike1999-2004 Sports (Team/Asylum-Ayslum/ESPN)2004-2006 FM-style talk with Tom Leykis and Don & Mike2006-2006?Classic Country2006? SportsYou could plot this on paper as an endless loop. If I were running this operation, I'd consider breaking out of the loop with something different, like Air America. But I guess that's too much to expect from the current regime. As for 1470 once 1010 goes all sports, what are the options? Music of Your Life is taken. Bruce would ratherapply to move to 6-6-6 kHz than put on Air America. Maybe it's time to call the Greeks about time-brokering???

At the risk of taking all this stinky bait....<sigh> here goes.First off, Brantleys time...like lots of other ex jocks/ ex announcers in this town....has come and gone....Nice guy. Lifelong Gator..though hes been relegated to "tail gate" duty on radio....but the next wave of (cough) anal-ysts will come from the Hardy Nickerson era....Secondly, if 1010 were going back to sports, they have a funny way of showing it: Reportedly 620 has most or all the Westwood One Sports programming that 1010 gave up when they went back to Country...Aside from the normally insipid rod n redneck shows on the weekend, they should stick to shots of Classic Country with a NASCAR chaser...Clear Channel has the only news station in town (970) and they now have the only true sports station in town...While I agree there are enough people for another sports station, the signal is too weak, and I truly think people in this market are tiring ofthe lame syndicated fare that passes for Sportstalk....even Dan Sileo...freakin' SILEO has ratings on 620 that bested those of Bruno...Game off. Keep it country.Next case.....

Sounds to me like "cbsradioguy" has been out of town for more than 10 days. No way is 1010 going back to an "all sports" format. Maybe somewhat of a talk/mixed bag format but not all sports. It didn't work the last few attempts and as Studio20 pointed out, there's not much in the way of programming available. Unless someone goes all local from 6a-7p, firing up another half a$$ attempt at a sports station is fruitless. The suits over in the blue building will be laughing all the way to the bank. Bucs, Rays, Lightning, Bulls..... all locked up on 620/970/1250... and the sports fans know it. Good luck.

I talked to someone who has seen the ratings, not the 12+ stuff on the internet, but has actually seen the book and the demos...she buys spots. She says 620's ratings and demos are incredible. She says their male demo is very good and some of the media buyers she knows are amazed an AM sports station is doing so well. She said, "they are hot right now."

620 is one of top performing sports stations in the country. Deumig's male shares rank up there with biggest shows nationwide. When WDAE was on 1250 and 820 was still running sports there were two sports stations in the market with ok twelve plus shares and ok male demos. When WDAE moved from 1250 to 620 and 820 was sold off to Mega, WDAE grabbed Jim Rome, grabbed the audience and has never looked back. Perhaps the smartest thing Jacor brass did when handled the Tampa consolidation for Clear Channel was make sure all the decent AM signals were locked up. They got 620 from Cox, kept 970, upgraded 1250, while selling 820 to non-competitive Spanish interests and 570 to non-competing religious interests.WFLA and WDAE were given chances to consolidate and grow audiences with a guarantee that no one would really consider competing due to a lack of quality AM signals. Thus stations like 1010, 1470, and 1040 make lame attempts at formats that can't penetrate the market anyway.

It looks like the rumors are true. 1010 has apparently stolen the rights to ESPN Radio back from 1470 this week. No word on when the switch will be flipped.

Hopefully sanity will prevail this time and they'll broadcast "The Dan Patrick Show" and "In the Herd with Colin Cowherd" in their entirety instead of pre-empting them for a bunch of washed up local hacks.

Don't know what the other poster was ranting about with 620 and the various sports packages. Like anyone actually gives a rat's ass about the USF Bulls, and with Lightning owner Bill Davis threatening to blow up the team next season unless they make a deep playoff run, 620's radio broadcasts will quickly go back down to the 0.01's they were averaging back in 1997-99.

As for Deumig, he'll get his eventually. Everyone thought Chris Thomas was untouchable before he decided to play DUI bumper cars with a Bucs cheerleader, leading the Weekly Planet to reveal all the various "Chris was drunk on the air at Channel 8" stories that had been floating around.

Not that I'm doubting you... I'd just like to see or hear what the source is concerning the ESPN Radio rights. Still doesn't make much sense to me unless ESPN Radio realized that Genesis/1470 WHBO is a joke of an operation.

Remember that in 97-99, "620" was on 1250, and 1250 covered a far smaller area then than it does now, even in daytime.

Genesis is turning into a leaking ship in this market... Bye bye Hannity, Bye Bye ESPN, what does Jethro Maduri do now?

ALL ACCESS: 1470 WON

Does this entail humiliation for someone at 1010?

Scot Brantley To Tackle Afternoons For WHBO-A

Brantley
GENSIS Sports WHBO-A (SPORTSRADIO 1470)/TAMPA taps former TAMPA BAY BUCCANEER and local sports radio veteran SCOT BRANTLEY for afternoon duties, effective MONDAY, JUNE 26th, replacing the TERRY BOWDEN show. BRANTLEY has previous TAMPA-area sports talk experience at the old WFNS-A and WQYK-A and served as radio color analyst for BUCS and FLORIDA GATORS football.

"SCOT brings years of sports experience and knowledge back to the air-waves. Former Pro Athletes give sports radio listeners a better perspective because they’ve been on the field or in the professional ranks as a player," commented WHBO-A GM BRAD JAMES.

"I look forward to getting back on the air and talking sports with the listeners. I have really missed being on the air and I have a lot to talk about," said BRANTLEY. "I also look forward to working with BOBBY FENTON and am excited about the plans BRAD JAMES has for SPORTSRADIO 1470 WHBO."

BRANTLEY's show will air weekdays from 4p-7p.

I couldn't imagine that 1010 was about to spend any money to try sports again. There was no reason to think it would work any better the second time around with the same old signal issues and the same old talent. I think they have thrown in the towel on the signal and will just continue with the simulcast.

BYE BYE Coach Bowden. Glad to hear you are gone from Tampa's airwaves. It is long overdue. I am sick of tired of everything being about when Terry was a coach. Sorry but I am over it.

Welcome back Scott. I know you;ll do a great job. And yes Brad James will to great things at 1470. Now if he could only get them a signal...

I'm glad for Scot's fans that he is back on the air. It should at least allow 1470 the chance to sell some local remotes. As for Brad James doing great things, he's been there for almost a year and this constitutes his big move. I am pretty sure Brad's golf game must be improving because the radio station sure hasn't.

Putting Scot on locally is better than Bowden, but that's about it. Scot couldn't do a thing for 1010, no reason to believe that is going to change here. His shrinking but fervent base of longtime supporters will be there, but Scot is no longer a big draw. The Bucs obviously saw that and opted for Hardy Nickerson.

Well, I'll admit when I was wrong, but there were several people at CBS Radio who were convinced that they'd be able to sign Brantly last weekend and were preparing to negotiate with ESPN to bring them back.

If there's any good that comes out of this, it's the end of Daniel Dahm in the Tampa market.

The problem is he's been replaced with "Captain Charisma" Bobby Fenton. The man really has no place in radio with that boring voice of his and I'm not sure who he has pictures of to justify getting a co-host gig.

Doesn't matter though, they'll get slaughtered by Deumig.

1470 doesnt have much room to move or increase their signal. They might be able to move the stick a little east and go directional, but the increase in power probably wont be enuf to make it worthwhile. There is a 1460 in Bartow and a 1480 in Arcadia they would have to protect, so according to ratchet rules they would have to put even less signal that way than they do now. But Genesis has even more problems than 1470 . They need to figure out what they are going to do with 1040 and their downed stick. I predict they will never be able to put that stick back up, so they are operating under some sort of STA special authority. I know their nite signal here in Bradenton is now almost useless. since they cant go directional like they are supposed to at nite, they have had to reduce power so as not to interfere with the 1040 over on the east coast and the big dog on 1040, WHO in DesMoines Iowa.

Cow...just curious...what don't you like about Daniel Dom? I've been in this market for about 2 decades and he seems to know what he's talking about...he's the saving grace to that Bowden show. I'm just wondering what your specific complaint is? Brantly is the total wrong choice...he's never suceeded here.

IIRC, 1470 only has to ratchet down if its 0.25 mv/m overlaps the 0.5 of the Arcadia and Bartow stations.

Bartow is a lost cause. They should just buy the station and shut it down. Maybe the cancelled 780 CP for Mulberry could be revived to give 1460 a new (and better) signal.

The bigger problem for 1470 may be 1490 in Bradenton, whose signal creeps into south St. Pete.

They would need a multi-tower site for effective nighttime coverage, and those are hard to come by in upper Pinellas. Doubt Salem would let them diplex on 860. Can't see Genesis springing for construction of a standalone, unless they could somehow combine 1040's facility with it.

Power increase for 1470?

1490 moved to the old WBRD 1420 Samoset site a year ago, and had to ratchet back to 500 watts mostly because the 1420 tower was a little taller and thus more efficient, but 1490's old Bradenton pier saltwater location with the ground in the water was very efficient to the north. They had problems with adjacent 1500 in Tarpon Springs. I think they have recently been able to go to 800 watts, but will never again be a full class C AM because of the interference factor to the Tarpon Springs station. I havent run the figures on moving 1470 and my guesstimate of power reductions to protect Bartow and Arcadia were just that, SWAG's. They need a good engineer like Ron Rackley to see if they can improve their signal. I've been retired too long. There are some really neat things computer models can do these days. Then of course there's the 570 site north of Tampa, a 6 tower double parallelogram. You could design most any kind of pattern with that set of sticks. But again you would have to deal with Salem. I've heard that Salem has some of these arrangements in other parts of the country, so maybe its a possibility. I wouldnt want to own the land my sticks are on so nobody ever has me by the shorthairs. That is 1040's problem now, they dont own the land.
