102.7 On the Air

It looks like no one has noticed,But,...102.7 WVEK-FM,Weber City,Va. is on the air stunting playing a loop of 3 versions of Rocky Top....Details to follow

I would've originally guessed it was going to be a "Sports Talk" format with them playing 3 different versions of Rocky Top and with Football Season being only a few weeks away.

Maybe that's exactly what they wanted folks to believe.

So does anyone out there think Classic Hits is a good format? I love the tags at the end of the songs!!! Never been done locally that i know of. I think it is interesting that they are playing 10,000 songs in a row. So question, why did the rumor start about country music and if so is it still true? if It is true ... what station they have is going country?? Anyway, so far I like the mix they are playing and no commericials!!! Glad it is not country at least....LOL Someone tell me if they think this format will really work. I wonder but i like what i hear so far....

My guess is that you don't hear all of that buzz for nothing. A buddy of mine back in the market says wait just a second...I'm not surprised about the Classic Hits format, but wait a minute...didn't Holston Valley just pay a BUNCH of MONEY for a station that's a loser? Hmmmmmmmm. Can't pay the bills with a station that's a loser. Of course, I haven't heard 102.7, but my buddy says it's ok-not great. He said he heard James Taylor and ACDC in the same break. Sounds like 102.7 was thrown on and the real work is being done behind the scenes. My money says 95.9 WTNK'd is next. I just wish I were there to hear it. Oh well, off to the car lot this morning boys, it's zero percent financing!!! Busy day and week!

BM

By the way, my sources keep hearing the name Dennis Kelly. Maybe he's got something in the works on 95.9 or possibly HV wants him to pd their country station 94 that's just outside of the Tri-cities (I think Glade Springs) wherever it is, it has a HUGE signal and it's another loser on their list of stations.

The station in its present form is giant steaming pile of crap.

Its a train wreck in slow motion.

And we wonder why radio is not getting any better. Its half assed stations like that, that get passed off as mass appeal entertainment.

An I pod on shuffle hooked up to a transmitter.

I can't believe anyone on this board could listen without laughing!!!!

And the backselling of every song is a joke!!! Its annoying as hell.

My sentiments exactly. I was just wondering when someone was gonna make that kind of post. Why do you want to take points away from the station that's already number three in the market? Why not go after number one? I was sooooooo hoping that they would make 102.7 Country. Then that would be war, and something I for one would love to see and hear.

NO IT WOULDN'T BE WAR! HOLSTON VALLEY ARE LAME PROGRAMMERS. ALL OF THEIR STATIONS ARE BORING. WHY WOULD WE EXPECT THIS ONE TO BE DIFFERENT? I HAVEN'T HEARD 102.7 YET, BUT HOPEFULLY A FRIEND OF MINE IS GOING TO SEND ME A TAPE. I WANT TO HEAR THE BACKSELL OF EVERY SONG.

THE WAR WOULD NOT BE ON ESPECIALLY IF HOLSTON VALLEY IS IN THE MIX! LAME...

First of all I can't seem to find anything I like about it. It doesn't have a good signal to start with and it sounds too much WQUT-ish. 96.5 WOXL in Asheville blows the doors off it. Since when do you follow Naked Eyes with the Scorpions or AC-DC. Kiss in Asheville or WQUT in the eighties did a better job. It's all over the road. Why didn't they put the "Super Hits" format on 102.7 instead of having it scattered around on low power translators? HV wasted their bucks for a new frequency. Like I've been ticked about for a long time.
WTFM sucks now. They only play about 10 songs on 98.5 over and over. I can predict what song is next. I've heard nobody really cares about Taylor Swift on AC radio. WMYI 102.5 only plays that crap at least once a day not every hour!!! Sorry guys, It's not gonna work. Turn it off!!!!

Ok I am a listener and not in radio. First off, I find the tags at the end of each song very nice. I do think that there is a lot of over lap with classic rock and oldies here. Truthfully I do not like Classic rock or WQUT does not do it for me and country music there is so much of it around here one more station would be over load. I just not sure what would be good. I know one thing the tri-cities is void of is a good Dance station. A station 100.7 did the format for a bit and everytime i drove through enjoyed hearing dance musice without all the hip hop and rap from 80s 90s and today but not sure why it didn't stay. I do think 1049 is trying more and more of that music which i like. I truly believe there is other formats that this area is ready for. I truly think a for profit christian format station would be nice but no one would do it. So someone tell us in the business what if not classic hits should 102.7 be? And please god don't say country there is way too many of those stations!!!!

Classic Hits as a format is fine. Its classic rock light designed for women. Cruise around to some "Eagle" stations on the web. Check out thier playlists. There is a flow to those stations.....This 102.7 has none of that flow. No jocks, boring imaging, and those horrible annoying obviously pre canned backsells. Who decided "well, they put the artist/title info on videos.....lets do it on the radio!" The question everyone should be wondering is who is programming? Who has thier name on that station? And who decided to put a 25 - 54 female format up against thier FLAGSHIP/TOP BILLING 25 - 54 female format? Cluster management anyone? Unbelievable.

I'd like to think they would have been different with 102.7. At least they put this one on right with all the "Rocky Top" stunting. When they put 95.9 on (at the time, 105.9), they just put it on and said "Ta-dah, here we are...listen." At least they had some of us in suspense with 102.7. To the previous post that said there are too many country stations around, how many are there around that matter? FM94 has never been a threat, and apparently never will be. 'XBQ can be taken down...I was just thinking that Mark Baker over at HV might go down that road.

102.7 does not have a signal to compete with XBQ. Nor do I think they have the pocketbook. To even give Q a run would take years. Just because you put a format on the air does not mean people will automatically start listening to it. You'd have to spend a fortune to make even a dent.....Billboards, TV, full staff, Promotions budget second to none and so on......and at some point, it would have to make money. There aren't many compaines left that would be willing to wait for the numbers to be sellable. I actually don't think any would. Short of Citadel making QUT country or Holston taking TFM country (neither of which are that bone headed)....no signal could compete.

If 102.7 is any indication of Holstons attack on a competitor (QUT), it is a sad joke. I think they are attacking themselves.

Ah Yes....The beauty of corporate deregulated radio in the 21st Century.....Owning so many stations don't know how to attack without hurting yourselves at least a little bit.....To be back in the Late 70's or early 80's with ownership rules still in effect giving a more open playing field or at least more opportunites to compete without shooting yourself in the foot while still providing entertainment, information, and music to a straving audience....No wonder listenership is down.....Everything is STERILE today with Classic Hits being the newest entry into a Sterile...make that almost lifeless radio market.

Hey everybody, just made it in to Bristol....staying with some friends in a 250K motorcoach (would never have done this still in radio) in for the races! It's probably been 2 years since I have been back into the tri-cities and boy what a radio ghost-town! Here's my list of turn ons and offs:

93.9 (HORRIBLE)
94.9 (BORING)
95.9 (WTF)
96.9 (SOUNDED GOOD--My 1st choice)
98.5 (HORRIBLE)
99.3 (COOL)
101.5 (OK--love my jb&B)
102.7 (MAYBE THEY'RE STILL STUNTING!!! AWFUL)
104.9 (DISJOINTED--RYAN SEACREST AND 2 SONGS FROM TODAY AN HOUR?)

I can actually pick up WIMZ here at the bms and they sound great! Thanks Knoxville! Oh well, off breakfast and the races! Sounds like I never left here 2 years ago! BTW, what in the heck happed to WGOC my bg connection? Several race fans are talking about it being gone?!? Oh, glad to hear FOX NEWS on 92.7!

That was true 2 decades ago back when WIMZ was owned by Stoner which was also back during the days of Phil Williams and the Waking Crew along with other DJ's such as Commander Dave, Kerry Lambert, and Scott Paulsen. Today WIMZ sucks. It is nothing but a shell of it's former self.

Now if you want to talk about repetitiveness with no variety stick around long enough and continue to listen to WIMZ and you will see what I mean after awhile. Today WIMZ is truly WIMP.

I think the female robot voice announcing the song title at the end of each song is funny. It gives even more of a reason for terrestrial radio to put a station on complete automation. Whatever happened to DJs who announced the titles of the songs in between sets?

The format isn't anything new. It sounds like WQUT with some soft rock.

Well back to my satellite radio. It is very well worth it with the radio choices offered in the Tri-Cities.

Exactly My point....Nothing in this market to listen to except the Big Dog in the sky(sirius) or Beyond AM, Beyond FM,It's XM....No wonder all terrestrial owners are running scared of homogenized satellite radio...The owners gave themselves up for dead long ago when they chose to stop serving the listening public and serve only a select RICH few and the pocketbooks that they have and not our EARS.They seem to forget when enought little ears listen...the pocketbooks will follow.
