102.9 Format Change

Lance Venta at RadioInsight reports that 102.9 has changed format and is replacing the KJR simulcast with Adult Contemporary. Haven't heard it yet to confirm.

That website refers to Dallas. But the thing that makes me think Lance Venta's post is accurate is ye says Clear Channel is applying for the callsign KYNW for the 102.9.

Why not just give 102.9's bigger signal to KKBW? At least KKBW has a real potential than something which Seattle has PLENTY of already.....

Is this going to hurt or compliment KBKS? Granted, the coverage areas are different, but Top 40 and Adult Top 40 are almost the same format nowadays.

Curmudgeon alert.

To me this just reinforces the Bul^%%%% associated with all the "move-in" (not Movin') mindset. BIG push by the owners/investors to "get another signal in there" followed by years of effort by programmers of "what the heck are we going to DO with it"? Cart leads horse. If something is even REMOTELY successful, all it does is dilute audience shares for each player.

Would LOVE to hear of a cluster of significant size (say 4 or more stations) in any decent market that isn't currently thinking "What are we gonna do with ????" because they constantly have at least one under-performer to deal with.

This isn't a slam on ownership...it's a slam on allowing 2 billion signals into every market that weren't necessary in the first place.

More than just that, it's how many times can you invent the wheel? From the looks of it, history is about to repeat itself (it NEVER seems to go away in radio.) It kind of reminds me of the CHR overkill of the '80s when we had KUBE, KNBQ, KPLZ and KHIT battling it out.

Throw in the automated Bellingham rimshots KISM/KNWR and you had a device which for a few months in 1986 saved you a couple bucks on a 45 rpm single. On any one of these frequencies, at any given time, day or night, "Rock Me Amadeus" was playing somewhere.

Like the sports overkill on AM, how many CHR-based stations do we really need on FM? They're up against KBKS, KUBE, KQMV, KPLZ and possibly KLCK-FM and KRWM (like ksradiogeek said "Adult Top 40" and CHR are practically identical musically anyway these days.) 102.9 went up against KMPS and KKWF as a country station and got their butts kicked. I don't see how this is going to do any better....

AllAccess article with quotes from the PD + VP/Programming:

10,000 songs in a row;
Hot AC on steroids;
Complement to KISS + KUBE.

"This new brand builds and expands CLEAR CHANNEL/SEATTLE's already strong options for our listeners and partners," adds station PD ERIC POWERS. "The New 102.9 NOW fills the need for this programming in the market and is the perfect radio home for artists like ADELE, TRAIN, KATY PERRY, ONE REPUBLIC, LADY GAGA and more."

"NEED for this programming?"......NEED?!!

I agree Bongwater. This sounds like a lot of the other CC Hot ACs I'ver heard, kind of boring. It'll be kind of interesting to see how much KLCK gets hurt by this move. Maybe if KLCK gets hurt bad enough Sandusky will give up on Hot AC again and go to maybe Active Rock to compete with KISW. I think they're trying to create a format wall in the market, 3 stations would probably sell well as a combo, and if enough people listen, it just may take down Star a notch or two.

And remember kids, it's a "brand", not a radio station. A faceless brand. Like a can of corn....

ANOTHER CURMUDGEON ALERT....

But even the PRESS RELEASES sound like centrally-generated bland programming.

"Our {conservative talk | sports | Contemporary | Country | Adult | Rhythmic } station will use our nationally-recognized (read "Premiere"/Tracked) collection of talent and will fill the need for this programming in the market".

In other words..."we (CC) don't have {one of those} in that market yet and we already have a low-cost national infrastructure in place to do it on the cheap".

This station sounds exactly like KPLZ or KLCK. In the south end it sounds a bit like MIX in Olympia. What do they hope to accomplish with the third or fourth HOT-AC with 70% of the market signal. It certainly could hurt KBKS as well. 10,000 songs in a row makes sense and will get an audience, but they are talking about "national talent" that will host shows. Do they mean syndicated? Are they moving Seacrest from KBKS? Does that mean they are throwing in the towel for KJR-AM, having an FM was an advantage in some areas over KIRO-AM and certainly over KPTK.

Do they think they can beat KPLZ? KLCK is already have a tough time doing it with a full market signal. Someone explain this to a radio guy. I don't get it. MIX 96.1 is already an AC that serves the South end very well. Did anyone at Clear Channel realize there was an established south end AC-Hot/AC?

Keep in mind... There's other population centers that 102.9 reaches, like Aberdeen, Centralia (the COL), and even Longview. KITI (Live 95), KJET (The Jet), and KPPK (The Peak) should keep a watchful eye out...
