102 Jamz Orlando is truly lost

I just took a look at their site for the first time since the new year and they have literally started chasing Power 95.3. They even removed their one full time black female personality, Ronda Jordan. It is now has former afternoon personality Jay Love hosting. Afternoons with La Loca from 2-7pm, and nights is now 7p-midnight. I'm assuming they are now just trying to take down Power while letting WCFB "Star 94.3" win by default and rule the 25-34 demo. CBS needs to figure out what is wrong with this station because it's now even worse off than it was last year with Steve Harvey and extremely repetitive in playlist. As I warned, Ricky Smiley in the morning wasn't going to help them because Orlando seems to be more of a "local" market and its PPM reflects that for 102 Jamz.

I Definitely agree with you their chasing power 95.3. i understand power 95.3 catches the Latino market well in Orlando but i listen to both stations, and power 95.3 sound more pop then jamz. They are killing Jamz in the ratings with out not mix shows except for one on Sunday evenings, pop leaning play list, and a local morning show.

Im not a fan of POWER 95.3,but they win thanks to the population.

I honestly don't know what is up with 102 Jamz. I know it was the last urban/rhythmic crossover acquired by Infinity/CBS back in 2001 from Clear Channel, whom held the station as an urban-leaning rhythmic like former-sister station KMEL. However, since the passage of personality Break-a-Dawn and the falling apart of the local morning show lead by DJ HukHer in 2004, 102 Jamz has been a mess. I've never understood how the station has been so yo-yo like in its format in the last few years. All the management changes haven't helped either.

I agree with ShawtyBlack_ATL not a fan of Power 95.3 they seem like a water down urban, and they don't really do much music wise but win by default because of the Hispanic population. I actually like 102 jamz they have weekend mix shows till 3am, and i actually like Rickey smiley but feel a local morning show will be better there , and they seem they chasing power music wise.

Would it help if 102 Jamz played some older hip hop songs? Also for morning shows would it be a bad idea if they air the morning show from sister station in Tampa?

Yeah, it would. They need to spins classic hip-hop and R&B joints to remind the 25-34 years what they are missing in the market with the Cox duo. It would open up the playlist some. I don't know about Orlando & the Freakshow on 102 Jamz.

You know, I remember when WJHM was untouchable, and everyone made fun of 95.3 after they switched from Party, saying they would never overtake 102.. I have Party airchecks somewhere :D anyways I used to listen to WJHM alot from 00-01 I did them, on and off.

But once Sleepy Steve was put on, its over like most mainstream urbans with a UAC am show. People get set in their routines, its going to take alotta time for folks to come back to 102 in the AM. That's what CBS gets.

Haven't paid attention to this market in years... but from what everyone says, 95.3 is more pop. Sounds alot like Power 96 MIA to me. What I noticed in FL, is many urbans have a heavy Latino AT lineup. I still find that strange, and I really dont agree with that either. I just looked at the AT lineup for x102.3 and was shocked at their lineup.

I really have never understood the whole FL state's markets and progamming ideas. FL is in its own world I've always thought... like its their own country.

I just don't get it.

Bottom line for me, to catch attention of lisetners, new music new music new music new music new music.. is all i can say. Put in some old school and people will more than likely *FLIP*. Once 102 catches their ratings they can throw in old school, but old music is not the answer when attracting the current lestner for a mainstream station.

After re-examining the situation with a little perspective, it was the Steve Harvey show that brought 102 Jamz down. I don't know if it was Jay Stevens or Reggie Rouse whom allowed Steve Harvey to be aired on 102 Jamz, but it clearly was a dumb move. Personally, I've never cared for the SHMS (Steve Harvey) and didn't understand what the hell was the deal with their "cost-cutting" measure of placing that show on the station. Actually, the throwbacks on 102 Jamz gave Star 94.5 (WCFB) a run for their money for awhile hence why they are now spinning old school hip-hop and R&B in their weekend mixes. 102 Jamz has to battle both Cox stations for listeners and if they would re-truncate themselves they should be able to bounce back.

On having Latinos on air on urbans, well as I told David Eduardo, on they make up a huge chunk of listeners on the East Coast for urban music. X102.3 in WPB is an urban, but it bills itself as "rhythmic" and with South Florida's huge Latin population they have to have some Latinos on air. In Orlando, Miami, and Tampa, urbans directly go up against rhythmics in the 18-34 demo and sometimes the 25-40 demo as well. However, I agree that they should have at least one black female on air full time on X102.3 & 102 Jamz. It's like black females are the "red-headed stepchildren" of Florida urban radio.

how come spanish stations dont feel the need to have african american jocks on their stations but urban stations have to have at least one latin?.....that person is keeping an african american jock on the unemployment line

Well If Their is an African American who could speak fluent spanish in radio yes i could see that happen but as of now i don't think its common too hear an African American on a spanish station if they don't speak fluent spanish.

Even then I doubt that would occur unless that black person is considered of Latin descent. The funny thing is like the black community, urban radio is suppose to be all inclusive.

Seem like the night guy for 102 jamz was fired his information is off the website now

looks like they did the national stop bullying day and stopped the music just like sister station v103 here did tonight

Yeah, WPGC did the same thing with Anji Corley the midday personality the other day. CBS is cleaning house at the churban stations that aren't performing at "top notch" caliber...

It would make sense they are the only "urban" in the market, but WJHM has always seems to be a bit more community-oriented than WCFB.

I really wish WYPO power 95.3 had Friday , and Saturday night mix shows.

Cox wouldn't allow that, that's a company wide policy for rhythmics (see WHZT as an example). They have positioned that station as a flanker to just help WCFB attack WJHM from the rhythmic side. It's basically a decoy that happens to do well in the ratings.

I wish CBS would get their act together 102 Jamz and just use their sister station in Hartford as an example and go from there with a more Orlando-oriented approach.

I like the CBS Rhythmic in West Palm Beach, X-102.3. Whenever I travel to Miami along I-95, they seem to be on top of things.
