103.3 Amp Radio Birthday Bash

...it was a riot...?

One tweet:
@1033ampradio listeners- thanks to the 35,000+ who came to #ampbdaybash. Next free show? A private pool party w/ @robinthicke

But...
@bostonradio: I wonder if AMP 103.3's birthday bash at City Hall Plaza will spent acting like a horrible, bratty little teenager for three hours

Boston MA: BPD reporting as many as 100 people fighting at City Hall Plaza during Selena Gomex concert.

CITY HALL PLAZA *update* @universalhub it's out of control, people started running and screaming - via ‏@sgiunta6

@Concierge Boston
Reports of a large brawl now @1033ampradio concert at City Hall Plaza.

Police on scene at City Hall Plaza asking for reinforcements; 100 brawlers brawling

Boston Radio Watch ‏@bostonradio 3h
Can't remember many big brawls at the Oldies concerts at the Hatch Shell. Well, at least not the ones I was involved in....21 years ago same thing happened at City Hall Plaza when WZOU(now Jamn) had a free show. History repeats itself...Nothing good happens when you have 35,000 annoying teens gathered at a Selena Gomez free show in 88-degree heat. Nothing.

@bostonradio i will actually watch the evening news tonight. classic stuff, i expected nothing less from the new 103.3 tone deaf morons.

>>Roving UHub reporter Stephanie Giunta managed to file this report:" It's out of control, people started running and screaming. People up front close to the stage getting sick and passing out. Fight happened to the right of the stage toward CVS." Police had to bring in a few reinforcements to try to restore order, but Giunta reports the crowd began thinning itself out once Gomez left the stage and some guy showed up for his own set.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: @bostonradio is a miserable old curmudgeon who isn't that connected at all. He thrives on being unhappy and unconnected to the real world of the broadcast business.

If you didn't enjoy the concert, chances are that you're not an 18-34 female. Fights happen at concerts all the time. Always have, always will.

I don't mind @bostonradio and he's given me good info. Besides, we haven't had a good radio-sponsored-concert-riot in YEARS.

And yup these sort of things happen at other types of concerts; the Kenny Chesney one at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh generated all kinds of trash; there were homemade toilets, prob too much drinking, etc. One of my fave cities but they too aren't immune from this sort of thing (don't know if a country station in the 'burgh sponsored it...) Some want Chesney banned while others (in
comments on web articles) blame interlopers from West Virginia.

http://www.wtae.com/kenny-chesney-t...ited/-/9681798/20681934/-/t02x89/-/index.html

>>Dozens of underage drinkers cited in Heinz Field parking lots...North Shore parking lots and the area around the concert venue, Heinz Field, were covered with litter and broken furniture.

"You're looking at probably 50-to-60,000 pounds of trash," said Leroy Stotler, owner of Three Rivers Power Sweep.

Yeah I don't think it was free and the problem could have been ALCO parking opening up the lots early so people could tailgate and drink. Yeah that happens at Steelers games too but not as bad and they said trash generated at the Chesney concert was about 5x what happens at Steelers games. I don't know if giving out Hefty bags and asking the patrons to use them would help. (I'm about to attend a convention in Pitt. and the hotels--we are now up to 7--give us Hefty bags to help contain room trash)

Comparing an Oldies free concert just because that station once sat on 103.3? That's like comparing intoxication at a BSO concert and a Kenny Chesney concert because both types of music have been played on 102.5.

In the handful of stories about the concert, only one mentions the "fight", and only three people were removed -- not hundreds. Sounds like AMP did a good job of getting its name out to 35,000 people.

Guess so though Universal Hub reported 100 people brawling; they also say however

>>Boston Police report arresting three male teens on disorderly-conduct charges: Said Captain Tom Lee of District A-1, "Sometimes when the weather heats up, you get kids acting up and we located a few kids misbehaving at the concert … pushing some other kids. They were all teenagers and a couple of them started fighting. We were able to bring in some additional officers and quell it quickly and place those individuals under arrest. Aside from that, the crowd was largely well behaved."

Now...remember Disco Demolition night in Chicago where Comiskey had a bit of a problem and the second game of a doubleheader was cancelled?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disco_Demolition_Night

>> an ill-fated baseball promotion that took place on July 12, 1979, at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois. At the climax of the event, a crate filled with disco records was blown up on the field between games of the twi-night doubleheader between the Chicago White Sox and the Detroit Tigers. Many of those in attendance had come to see the explosion rather than the games and rushed onto the field after the button was pressed. With the playing surface damaged both by the explosion and by the rowdy fans, the White Sox were required to forfeit the second game of the doubleheader to the Tigers...Dahl's sponsoring radio station was 97.9 WLUP-FM, so attendees would pay 98 cents and bring a disco record; between games, Dahl would destroy the collected vinyl in an explosion.

I guess I'll have to be the first one to bring this up. I'm sure some of you have heard that this Sunday, Amp Radio is having a free concert at City Hall Plaza featuring Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, among other artists played on Amp. I brought this up with some people, and they just said "There is no more 103.3, didn't it change?" Come to think of it, I actually can't find a single person who LIKES the new Amp radio. I guess "Oldies 103.3" is still stuck in a lot of people's minds, even after a whole year.

Well, so much for name recognition. I still think CBS made a big mistake in blowing up WODS. Frankly, I don't give a rats a** about "target demographics" and whatnot. Yes, WODS needed a major shot in the arm to make it fresh. Sister station WCBS-FM (New York) still has the best sounding Classic Hits format around. WODS should have follow their lead updated the format a bit a-la 'CBS-FM. But, they didn't. So, I now listen to out-of-market 'CBS-FM, K-Earth 101 and K-Earth Classics (K-Earth's HD2) and the on-line "95PEN" Tribute Station.

I and many people couldn't agree more. Those who ignore history (WCBS-FM) are doomed to repeat it.

If you were a radio programmer, GM, or owner you would. A lot.

How do you freshen an oldies station? All the songs are 30+ years old. While you, me, and others might like it adding deep cuts is ratings suicide.

In any demo...Amp radio isn't exactly up to par for a format that thrives as #1 in the market.. who woulda thought that... I also found this free concert story entertaining to read someone put those teens on leashes lol :D

You could add '90s tracks like WDRC-FM Hartford has, but then "you and others" would probably hate it.

OK...so you add 90s tracks. Great. Biggest problem is that the other 14 songs per hour are the same old moldy oldies. To me that's not freshening.
I'd drop everything after, say, 1975 or even up to the disco era and yes, add some early 90s cuts (Roxette, Richard Marx, Madonna etc) and some "MTV hits" but without the more rock stuff played on the classic hits stations every 18 hours. Oh, and NO urban AC :) Would it work? No idea. I guess it would depend on the market and its demographics. It would be an interesting experiment. It'd be a very fine line between familiar and boring.

An hour of DRC-FM:

Hollywood Nights -- Bob Seger
Sweet Talkin' Woman -- ELO
Would I Lie to You -- Eurhythmics
More More More -- Andrea True Connection
Our House -- Madness
Le Freak -- Chic
Roll With It -- Steve Winwood
Name -- Goo Goo Dolls
I'm Alright -- Kenny Loggins
When I Need You -- Leo Sayer
1-2-3 -- Miami Sound Machine
What It Takes -- Aerosmith
Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now -- McFadden and Whitehead

Not much mold on that list. Could that have worked on 103.3?

No. Lots of people reaching for the button on the car radio because the Aerosmith fans would have changed stations when the Miami Sound Machine went on and wouldn't be around for Aerosmith. Filter out the disco and neo-disco.

Maybe it's me but that Madness song is a bit moldy and Aerosmith just sucks. I'll have to listen to DRC's stream. Is it live or tracked? They appear to have stolen my ideas :) ;D

Live a.m. and p,m. drive, tracked middays and evenings (but a decent job of sounding live), jockless autopilot overnights.

A little more moldiness in this hour:

Tell Her About It -- Billy Joel
Margaritaville -- Jimmy Buffett
Every Breath You Take -- Police
Fly -- Sugar Ray
Lotta Love -- Nicolette Larson
Your Love -- Outfield
Black Water -- Doobie Brothers
When I See You Smile -- Bad English
Light My Fire -- Doors
Dim All the Lights -- Donna Summer
Too Late For Goodbyes -- Julian Lennon
Welcome Back -- John Sebastian
Tumbling Dice -- Rolling Stones

That Doobie Brothers/Bad English/Doors/Donna Summer/Julian Lennon sequence ... I don't know ... :-\
