103.3 SA flips to....

WOAI was on an HD channel off of 101.9 and a 105.7 translator once in 2012, but that only lasted a couple months.

What is 94.5 playing? Wikipedia has KTFM HD2 as We 94.5 and the HD3 as 103.3 The App.

I also asked about 94.5 no one seems to know. Wish the online receiver was still on that was in San antonio. I liked checking that.

Yeah GlobalTuners is epic. Wish I knew how to set it up for my area, more people need to take part if you ask me.

Listening to a few days already, have some thoughts. Seems the station leans way more classic/00’s-2010’s vs playing newer alt rock. I rarely hear newer alt rock played and seems that when they do, it’s the same few songs/artists. It’s as if they are going conservatively. Hear a lot of 99.5 type of alt rock played noticeably. How typical of SA. lol. Thank goodness I have Sirius XM because Alt Nation still blows it out of the water big time. Mixed feelings on this. I’m glad the station returned, but I was expecting for it to be better. In fact, I think it’s actually a lot more classic/older alt rock played compared to the stations initial first launch back in 2015. Anyone else feel the same? Curious to hear others thoughts on this.

Alpha should flip 94.1 and go after KONO FM doing what BMP Radio did with now defunct 98.9 KXBT. 94.1 KTFM San Antonio's Classic Hits and between 12 AM to 6 AM air Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel.

I, too, have mixed feelings but it's a start in my opinion. I do hear a large mix of classic alternative (i.e early Blink 182 and Sum 41, Nirvana, Weezer, etc.) which is typical of most alternative stations across the nation anyways, a couple of older alternative songs (Bob Marley, Billy Idol, Depeche Mode), and a fair mix of 2000s/2010s (The Killers, My Chemical Romance, Twenty One Pilots, MGMT, Glass Animals) and yes there are some newer songs (heard mostly "Downstairs" by Matt Maeson, but also heard "Ensenada" by Sublime, "Get The Message" by The Paradox, "Dracula" by Tame Impala, and "So Far So Fake" by Pierce the Veil).

But in San Antonio's defense, the market itself isn't much of an alternative market compared to let's say Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Houston, Atlanta, or Los Angeles which had stations that set the foundation since the 80s or 90s. Back in 2015 when App was launched, it was an attempt to test the format. Since its first demise in 2017, a lot of App listeners were disappointed (myself included) to hear yet another hip hop station. Today, I'm glad App is back but I really was hoping it would replace Sports Star on 94.1 HD1 to really compete against 99.5. I'd love to see a competition in SA similar to what happened in Dallas (when Alt 103.7 took down heritage mainstream rocker 97.1 The Eagle) but like I said, San Antonio is a much different market than Dallas.

I will say one thing: at least I haven't heard Tool, Metallica, or God-forbid "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" being butchered to death like on 99.5

Yes. I would really like to see them on a high-powered dial. I think they would really eat into KISS.

If I'm guessing, Sports Star is staying put, and 1250 will be surrendering its license.

I'll grant you that Connoisseur nuked a sports station in Amarillo (also called Sports Star) a few months ago, but, last I'd heard, Sports Star was making money despite the anemic ratings.
That's exactly what I'm hearing...

KZDC seems to have decent coverage of the immediate SA metro area, but I would think having to maintain separate day and night transmitter sites is a PITA (even though the night site is diplexed with sibling KTSA) which would definitely play into any decision to turn in the license.

It covers the area okay, but it doesn't put a great signal into Comal County at much anytime and almost totally misses it at night. Not that it would draw much audience after dark, but that's one of AM's major problems in a nutshell.

Not sure if one or both of the 1250 sites were sold when Alpha unloaded its towers (I've been told a handful of AM towers weren't wanted), but, if they were, Connoisseur is paying rent on both sets. I've heard several different figures on the tower rent, but the lowest I've heard is $4,000/month. Spending almost $100,000 a year on an AM that has miniscule listening would definitely be a problem.

San Antonio would seem to have more AM listening than most cities (assuming the AM listening that shows up is to AM and not their translators or simulcast partners), but it's still less than 10%.

Here in Canyon Lake (Comal County) at night, 1200 WOAI is rock solid. KTSA has occasional fades, but overall a consistently good signal. 680 (KKYX) is listenable, but has fading. 1350 and 1540 will make it in, but with a lot of interference. 630, 720, 760, 860, 930, 1100, 1160, 1250, 1310 and 1480 are either non existent or down in the mush.

I was wondering what your reception was like. I remember most of the San Antonio signals beam themselves straight into the ocean at night. KKYX is practically a local in Corpus and Victoria but doesn't cover the entire San Antonio market.

Can't remember when it upgraded, but 1250 was just a 1,000 watt signal when it was a KZEP simulcast. I'd guess Radio Unica or BMP upgraded it. All that work probably wasn't worth the investment.

The San Antonio directional night signals have long suppressed coverage to the north. When growing up in Austin in the 1960s I recall 630 and 860 put good day signals into Austin, but completely disappeared at night. 550 and 680 were solid in the daytime, but rather poor (but listenable) at night. 930 was weak during the day and nonexistent at night. The others were very poor to nonexistent during the day with no trace at night.

So the only three SA signals audible in Austin at night were 550, 680 and 1200.

1250 started out in 1953 as a 500 watt daytimer, later increased to 1kw in the mid-1960s. Later was granted nighttime authorization; I also seem to recall the was an application to move to 1240 will 1kw full time sometime in the 1980s but don’t recall if that was actually implemented. Timeline for the night authorization is rather fuzzy.

The current separate 25kw day facility and 920 watt night site were launched in the early 2010s.

I recall hearing a very weak 1250 in Austin in the 1960s during its 1kw KUKA incarnation.

My reference was always either DFW or Tulsa, but that tracks with my recollection. I can remember hearing KKYX in Dallas during the daytime and, sometimes, in Tulsa during the post-sunrise or pre-sunset hours, but it would suddenly disappear right before sunset. In Tulsa, 680 was either KKYX or KFEQ but both would get obliterated by KGGF 690 except for an hour or two before sunset or after sunrise. In Dallas, it was strong enough to cause splatter on 690.

WOAI was a challenge in both due to KVOO 1170 and KLIF 1190, but, when I went to college in Arkansas, I could hear it at night on the clock radio in my bedroom. It boomed in pretty much all night in both Fayetteville and Little Rock, though I had to wait for KJEM/KESE 1190 and KYOO 1200 to sign off. A couple times I got the 1200 out of Chicago instead or splatter from WOWO in Fayetteville, but WOAI was almost always money in the bank on most every radio I owned.

From what I could tell, 1250 used a two tower array at night while maintaining 1,000 watts. I can't imagine that covered the city well, even going back to the 70's. It's been several years (about 15) since I was last in San Antonio. I remember a couple of the current translators being on-air, but I didn't try them around the entire city. I know signals travel better there than they do in most parts of the country, but I still wonder how much of the area those translators cover. The signal contour maps aren't all that impressive for even the best translators. San Antonio sprawls for miles these days, and the metro area continues to grow far beyond what it was even 20 years ago. Canyon Lake barely existed in 1990, and, today, it's the size of Fayetteville, AR when I arrived for college in January 1994.

I was in the New Braunfels area yesterday I can confirm that 94.5 is simulcasting KZDC and K280GC is broadcasting K-Love Eras.
