103.5 Huntsville is on the air

Ok, I know Hot 103.5 is commerical free, but is it a good idea to have a DJ on there take requests and know what's going on? Still same ol same ol, but give people a chance to request a song we should hear. Any thoughts?

I know this topic is pretty much dead, but I've just started listening to this new Hot 103.5 station for the last few days and the play list sounds very good. Much better than the other so-called Hot 107.7 imo. In a way, the station reminds me of the old 107.7 WENN. But I guess WEUP resembles that old station more than Hot 103.5 at this point. What do you all think?

I guess it just depends on the target audience you're trying to reach and what mood you feel like at the time to determine who is better because Hot 107-7 in Birmingham and Hot 103-5 in Huntsville aren't the same format. Hot 107-7 is stricktly R&B Urban A/C, but they are heavy on hits from the 90 through now with little music mixed in dating later than that, so they are trying to target adults 25 to 40. That's different from traditional Urban A/C stations that are heavy on playing R&B from the 70's and 80's and light on current R&B because they are targeting 35 to 54. Hot 107-7 does a good job at bridging the gap between young 12 to 25 R&B audiences and older 35 to 54 R&B audiences. When I'm in the mood to listen to R&B I really like Hot 107-7 and I think their play list is right on for their target audience (which I fall into). Hot 103-5 is targeting younger audiences 12 to 35. They are heavy on Hip Hop with some current R&B hits as well as some current rhythmic hits mixed in. You are right it does resemble the old 107-7 when it was WENN back in the day but the big difference is the rhythmic twist. When compairing WEUP and Hot 103-5, Hot 103-5 is Rhythmic leaning where as 103.1 WEUP is stricktly urban. I am liking Hot 103-5's play list better than WEUP's though because there is more variety. Hot 103-5 will pull much of the black audience because of its heavy urban base, but I also think most of the white audience listening to this style of music will lean to Hot 103-5 when choosing between them and WEUP because of the rhythmic cuts Hot blends into the mix. It's hard to compair the three because they are all a little different from each other, but that's a good thing I think because it gives a better variety and more choice on the dial.

I see. Perhaps if Hot 107.7 debuted on a brand new frequency like Hot 103.5 did, then I wouldn't have this bias against the station so much. I can't help to think if they haven't taken over the 107.7 frequency, the X would still be on the air. But then again, Citadel would have already flip that station to sports radio by now.

Well, I hope this is the beginning of some major shakeups in the Huntsville market in the future. I was starting to get bored of it all.

I see what you mean. The X was on for so long and was well known even to those who didn't listen to it. They atleast knew what station it was when you mentioned it. I hated to see it go.

I hear ya there! I got bored with it all a long time ago LOL.

Was in Huntsville on Friday and the station I listened to the most was Hot 103.5. Like others have said the station is well executed. They do indeed sound like a Rhythmic, not afraid to play Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado and Timbaland crossovers. They cleverly talk about the "other station" right next to them on the dial, but don't mention it by name...b/c they're right in between WEUP and WZYP. Bring a Rhythmic they can steal audiences from both stations, which is especially easy to do when it comes to ZYP - an overly Adult leaning CHR station by day.
The biggest problem of course is the signal - I'm hoping with time the station will be able to move to a better frequency that'll cover the entire market properly.
Keep it up Hot 103.5!

looks like cumulus has gotten the former 103.5 translator up on 103.9 now. I get in the car this morning, and when I go to switch from the XM, which I have on line input, to sirius, which I had on 103.9, instead of hearing buzzsaw I heard the wolf
