I call it the same old stuff that won't last!
I was up in SF doing some business, and I noticed the nice peeling billboard on Lombard, so I tuned away from 104.5 to 103.7 'The Band' and within 30 seconds I went back to KFOG because I was not in the mood for Steve Miller's 'Take The Money and Run'. Been There, Heard That... BTW - KFOG was playing Feist's 1,2,3,4 - A much better choice I must add =) KFOG is my Bay Area Station - 104 point 5 San Francisco, 97 dot 7 San Jose - Peace - JG

KHKK 104.1/KDJK 103.9 in Modesto has better Classic Rock than them.
I have to disagree with you. The Hawk is just as bad as The Band. The Hawk has the same bland variety of Classic Rock as The Band. Only the DJ's on The Hawk are better.

Hi Folks:

I used to listen to The Hawk about 10 years ago. Back then it was a great radio station. The last time I heard it things seemed to have changed. The music seemed more mainstream.

Re: 104.1 The Hawk Sucks!

Where I live at (Stockton), I can pick up 2 Classic Rock Stations on my radio. The Hawk is one and KSEG-96.9 The Eagle from Sacramento is the other. And between the two, The Eagle is FAR BETTER than The Hawk. While both have Syndicated Morning Chat (BOB & TOM at The Hawk and MARK & BRIAN at The Eagle), The Eagle plays a much better variety of Music than The Hawk. During the Noon Hour, The Eagle has CAFE ROCK with host, Bob Keller who originated the show on the Legendary KZAP-98.5 more than 25 years ago. Bob is the Proprietor with his usual cast of misfits like Chef Ptomaine, Betty Varicose, Sal Monella and Scraps The Wonder Dog. They even have a Fish Head Friday. The Eagle also has a show dedicated to the 60's on Saturday Mornings called SAY YA WANT A REVOLUTION (Also Hosted By Keller), THE EAGLE EASY is on Sunday Mornings and plays Acoustic Versions and Rare B-Sides and on Monday Eves, LITTLE STEVEN'S UNDERGROUND GARAGE. Also every once in a while, The Eagle has a CLASSIC ROCK A-Z (every song from A-Z) as well as a CLASSIC ROCK ALBUM SIDES (playing an entire album). As for The Hawk, They play the same songs day after day, night after night, Just like 103.7 The Band!

In Fresno my two main choices of CLASSIC ROCK 95.7 The FOX and 105.1 The Blaze, The Fox has Bob and Tom, and the Blaze is local with Roddem and Lipp, I perfer Roddem and Lipp being that I thing Bob and Tom has gone stale over they many years. The Blaze plays more cuts from Classic rock artist and plays more 80s Hard Rock and HEAVY METAL bands like Metallica, Def Leppard, and AC/DC, where the Fox has a tighter playlist playing the same repeats of the bigger hits by The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and Elton John. I like The Blaze better ,bigger playlist and more 80s. There both better than KHKK 104.1 The Hawk, which can be received most of the time on 103.9 KDJK here in Clovis. Oh and they are better than THE BAND.

Re: 104.1 The Hawk Sucks!

An even better Rock station, is KRXQ-98.5 (98 ROCK). A nice blend of Rock, Past And Present from the 1970's up to today. Don't care for the morning show (Rob, Arnie & Dawn), but they play some pretty good rock! And It Became #2 in the ratings!

I'v checked out KRXQ stream ,very similier to KRZR 103.7 in Fresno.
I didn't mention in my previous post THE BLAZE also plays 90s, Nirvana, STP, Collective Soul and Red Hot Chile Peppers and so forth.

kenrayc, I checked both KRXQ and KRZR websites and checked out both of their playlists for the last few hours, and there is a difference between those two stations. KRXQ plays MORE Classic Rock Songs than KRZR. For Example, KRXQ played songs by PHIL COLLINS, FOGHAT, AEROSMITH, METALLICA, THE DOORS, JIMI HENDRIX and QUEEN as well as more contemporary artists like INCUBUS, LINKIN PARK, NIRVANA, RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, RADIOHEAD, FOO FIGHTERS, NICKELBACK and THE BEASTIE BOYS. KRZR's playlist had few if any Classic Rock Songs. In fact alot of what is on their playlist is similar to CC's Modesto Active Rock Station, KMRQ-96.7

Sorry, but I laughed out loud when I read that -- if you really listened to KFOG for long periods you'd know just how often they play Feist and the 12 other women who sound exactly like her (Colbie Caillet et al). That Feist song is, what, 2 years old and still played like a current? But hey, stick around and you might get to hear "Rocket Man' or "Under Pressure".... again. Triple-A is the most boring format out there right now. But I agree The Band is snooze-ville.

More power to them, then -- mind telling us who it is? They clearly aren't typical, if you look at the Triple-A airplay cahrts.

KFOG is admittedly more boring than most, presumably because it's older-skewing than most.

Haha Mike, thanks for taking my critique in a good natured manner. There are different shades of AAA playlists so I try to avoid using a broad brush. I agree about KFOG they are more on the conservative side of the Adult Alternative spectrum. You had replied to a friend of mine, JoeG, and he and I both were disappointed by what happened in LA (100.3 The Sound). So with that context, to Joe, KFOG is a way better rep of the genre. But I prefer several stations that have much more diversity in their playlist than KFOG's playlist. KINK-FM, WXPK, WRNR, even KPRI, but most unique is WRSI Northampton, MA. Here's the link to today's playlist.....

Nope, you are correct!!!

Supertramp had nine charting hits on the Billboard Top 40:

May 1975 - Bloody Well Right
July 1977 - Give a Little Bit
April 1979 - The Logical Song
August 1979 - Goodbye Stranger
November 1979 - Take the Long Way Home
October 1980 - Dreamer
October 1982 - It's Raining Again
February 1983 - My Kind of Lady
June 1985 - Cannonball

You know, 103.7 The Band can be a very educational station. For example, were you aware that Supertramp's only hit was Goodbye Stranger? Uh huh. Something I did not know. I, being ignorant before but not now, had previously thought Supertramp had a string of very popular songs during the 70s and 80s. My mistake. I know better now, thanks to 103.7 The Band!

What have you learned from listening?
I agree. I always thought their song THE LOGICAL SONG was a hit? Guess I was wrong.

Logical Song was THE hit. It's the only one that tested well enough to be played on classic rock and some gold based ACs as well. This seems to be an attempt to prove that they're playing deep cuts.

I alway thought" Take The Long Way Home" was the huge Supertramp hit.

Hmmm... guess I managed to miss every one of those classic rock and AC stations that tested "The Logical Song". Most of the other **HITS** including "The Logical Song" were actually played on our stations.

Just checked, and in 1995, Big 98.1 played the Logical Song, Give A Little Bit, & Goodbye Stranger. They were rolling a library of 595 songs at the time (not counting Disco Saturday Night, which had it's own 180 song library.)

Was in a friend's office earlier this afternoon...guess it was in the 1:00 o'clock hour somewhere and heard a radio in an adjacent cubicle playing Supertramp 'Take the Long Way Home'. Made me think back to our posts yesterday...the person playing the radio said they were listening to "103/7 The Band".

Wow...seems like a small library for classic hits (for that time). Was that the format at Big 98.1 at the time? Still trying to catch up on Bay Area radio history..I am a transplant from the Northeast. I moved here 6 years ago as of November 2003. Thanks for the info!

I would say classic hits. The tag line originally was "the biggest hits of the 70's all the time." This later became "the biggest hits of the 70s & 80's."
