103.9 - Pratt - Consultant Confused

Radioresearcher said:
John - you are exactly right. And there are some inherent flaws in any methodology. Uh, and yes, I don't think it's fair to compare 103.9 to a South Mountain signal so that was a silly statement...

John, Clearly, I tossed random call letters out of my butt for exaggeration sake to make a point out re: profitability. You are correct, it's not a fair apples-to-apples comparison to make. KFNX has a huge signal, too, and it's profitable enough to enjoy disregard of PPM's and market shares. I thought the purpose of a commercial AM/FM is to make money and give a good return to the shareholders, no? I'm pretty sure a bunch of old white guys (the ones who are ultimately paying for the consultant) who are gathered in a conference room or conference call for quarterly results are more concerned with what ROI they're getting. With post-flip 103.9, it won't be much - that's my point. I'm very skeptical. Mark your calendar for another 103.9 flip in 2013.

RadioResearcher, Have you even heard Bieber's new album (which, check Billboard next week, will in fact debut at #1)? Once "Beauty and a Beat" gets released as a single, it's a shoo-in for Hot AC. That's aside from some of his Christmas songs that routinely get played on AC every year. Crossover to AC "at some point"? "At some point"? As in, next week or next month? He's not One Direction, and his handlers have made a concerted effort to sex him up like what happened to Zac Efron. Bieber already has mass appeal to WOMEN (not just to 7-year-old girls.)

Gotta say, the Bieber mostly only appeals to the 13 and under crowd. NEVER had a request from ANYONE over the age of 13 for this dude. I do a lot of family events and that is my take on the Bieber. However, I'm getting mega requests for 'Boyfriend' from the 13 and under girls.

And you probably never WILL get a Bieber request from an adult - ever - because:
(1.) Adults don't call in music stations to make requests when they can download their musical selections from iTunes in the privacy of their home, and
(2.) No sane adult will ever admit to liking a Bieber song. (Who do you think gives those 13 year old girls the money to buy the CD with? That's right. Their moms.)

There's no asterik attached to "mass appeal." Either a track has it (and a for-profit business should be programming it to stay competitive), or it doesn't. ;D ;D ;D

Trust me, adults asks for JB. He will crossover in time. As much as I dislike it, I have had huge reactions in bars with no minors

DJPerry, Your post really made my day. He already has crossed over, AFAIC. I wish I knew why post-flip 103.9 won't play the Bieb when he's got the same level of "mass appeal" of other tracks they (and dozens of others) are also playing. Have a good rest of the weekend. :)

You're picking one song by one artist. Bieber is making an attempt to broaden his appeal and it's very likely the next single will be played more in depth at Hot AC. Not one song makes a station.

There's plenty of Usher, Rihanna, One Direction, and Carly Rae Jepsen on the air.

"One song by one artist"? If he's got Christmas albums that get played on KEZ and can sell out football stadiums, I'm confident saying the Bieb's marketability and broadened appeal on a commercial AM/FM is a non-issue for anyone but the most naive. I never said one song makes a station, but I am saying multiple conspicuous omissions can break a station. Tell me I'm wrong when 103.9 flips again. I triple-dog dare you. :)

Question has been on my mind for a few days now, so I might as well ask:
Justin Bieber on an Adult Top 40 or Hot AC? Is this normal?

Pop stations played Billy Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart for about fifteen minutes back in the day. It didn't mean they believed in the record.

If a label really wants airplay, they'll find ways to get it.

With the ratings figure of MY103.9 now at 1.0, would this mean that whole concept is a complete failure & they should go back to being the EDGE??

Nope, at least not until the Bieb's here in September to kick off his world tour, because flipping then would be a terrible business decision. As we all know, times have changed and the PPM's don't support alt-format in this market anymore. Besides, it's oh-so-more profitable to have a dozen AM/FM's with nearly-identically programming logs. There are better odds of "KUKQ" migrating offline and back onto an AM frequency or someone ponying up the money for a specialty indie-music program on KFNX.

Bring back Arizona's Party Station.

They might as well just simulcast KKFR then...

As for young males and radio, are they abandoning radio completely or just moving to spoken-word formats like all-sports? Something's got to explain the sudden drop at KUPD.

Did the panel turn over recently?

I don't know. But, from a listener's standpoint, I've been flipping between Mike & Mike on 620 and whoever the Yahoo Sports host is (Steve Czaba?) in the morning on 1060 instead of Holmberg. I'm starting to wonder if their claim of "Arizona's #1 morning show" on their billboards is still true. Sometimes shticks run their course.
