1030 WBZ

Is anyone able to receive 1030 WBZ in Boston during the day in Canada with fairly decent signal? I know it does reach parts of some of the Atlantic provinces but just curious where you can or have heard it either in the car or on a good portable radio. Can it be heard in Quebec or Ontario up to Montreal or Ottawa?

Sometimes in Kingston, Ont. Wintertime 1030 WBZ has a OK signal only at night and nothing daytime. it dose fade in and out most of the time now. It seemed to be stronger 10 or 20 years ago. I remember as a child staying up late in bed tuning in to WBZ.

Back in the mid-60's WBZ was a regular in Vancouver at nights during the winter months. That all changed in the late 60's when KTWO in Casper, Wyoming moved to 1030 and dominated the frequency in the western half of North America (as they still do today).

Somewhere between Toronto and Ottawa I'm sure I've picked up that station on the Via train, but you really need a window seat, and it's no cheap walkman! (it has the ability to record off radio onto casette.)

As far as daytime reception goes, in December and January, WBZ can be heard in Ottawa all day, signal strength varies. Around Christmas time, I have had no problem hearing it at all on any radio. I don't think it is as easy in Montreal with a local at 1040 especially during the day. At night, it's one of the loudest stations on the dial, and it may as well be a local.

I'll second that. I'm in eastern Canada 2-3 times a year on business trips (including next week). I usually drive Toronto-Montreal-Ottawa. In the winter months, WBZ is typically audible all day in a car radio anywhere along the drive with minimal fading.

Hi Tincap....

Actually I'll be going through Brockville Wednesday. I have two early morning appointments in Montreal west Island, then I have to be in T-O for an after-work cocktail with a vendor. So I won't be able to stop. Although I'll be rolling through Brockville around lunchtime, so I may hit the Harvey's at that main exit off the 401 for a little "grab and go".

I'll be through again....and probably not on such a tight schedule, so maybe we can catch up then. It'd be great fun. This time, however, it looks like my main concern will be avoiding the OPP guys! ;D

Just as well, with the 'grab and go' unfortunately (good choice though, Harveys ;D) , as I'll be teaching up in Ottawa at the time. Keep me posted and an eye out for the OPP...especially since they're using all sorts of 'brown wrappers' these days!

When I came through at around 2pm this afternoon, there was something on 1030, very faint, sounded like non-music of some sort, but I couldn't identify it. I did get a couple of skywaves however. WWKB was listenable on 1520, and WQEW (or whatever it calls itself) was even better....strong....on 1560.

And yes, my trip to Canada is complete....got my Harvey's fix in Cornwall, and last night (Tues), I had a Creemore draft at the Jack Astor's in Ottawa (actually Kenata).

I can go home now! ;D

Does it compare to any other burger place? I DO love Harvey's, but If I could, I'd gladly trade a few locations for a Jack in the Box or a White Castle! (never been to those places, only hear they're great!)

Apologies for the continuing hijack of the thread...

I'd compare the Harvey's product as being closest to In-And-Out Burger in California.    By that I mean truly "flavorful". Although I think Harvey's burgers are frozen, while In And Out is fresh. In-And-Out has a MUCH simpler menu.  Anything you want as long as what you want is a burger and fries.  Harvey's has more offerings, but you can still customize your "basic" burger to your own personal taste from a fresh...or at least "somewhat fresh"...bar.  Harvey's also has the best fries of any fast food place.  I'm not a fan of the sliders at White Castle, and while Jack's puts out a pretty good product, I personally can take or leave it.  But Harvey's....I won't go out of my way, but I'll make it a point to stop.

Unfortunately, I've heard that the parent company is de-emphasizing the brand to concentrate on Swiss Chalet and Kelsey's.  I hope that's not true.  I'm not a fan of Swiss Chalet at all.  And while Kelsey's is a fun, relaxing place, the food strikes me as average at best.

(And when I found myself in another "grab & go" situation today...I had another Harvey's burger for lunch!)

EX- Canadian here..............

Never had a Harveys (as weird as that sounds) but will usually do Swiss Chalet when visiting the relatives on the Canuck side. It's a bit of welcome diversity when compared to Boston Market. ;D ---

Cara foods (SP?) is doing just that, but look for more Harveys/Swiss Chalet (express) locations sharing the same building.

HEY? We should pull together and buy the staff at WBZ a bunch of Harveys burgers and let them tell us what a good burger is! :D

If you are in a decent location for AM in Upstate NY, and its during the fall or winter it is possible to bring in the NYC 50kw'ers and WBZ during the day. I find I can do this in my car but you have to turn it up pretty loud and there is a lot of static. With the short days during the winter it can be possible to get skywave enhancement during the afternoon and morning. During the dead of winter, December, January I find it the best time to get Boston and NY on AM during the day where I am which is near Canada.

I had WBZ via daytime skywave upstate NY last week, and also on previous trips, so I can vouch for the accuracy of that.

As for the Harvey's/Swiss Chalet combo operations in the same building....

At least at the location in Grimsby (exit 74 off the Queensway), the setup seems to lend itself to grabbing a beer to go with your burger. Never tried it myself because I've always been "on duty"....and besides, I'm not sure if that's exactly legal. Also, as much as I like Harvey's....I'm not a fan of Swiss Chalet.

Doesn't the same outfit also own Kelsey's?

In New York's Capital District, WBZ is a regular, day & night, anytime of the year. Don't know where Cyber was (in upstate) but BZ has no trouble. NYC is also no daily stranger. 660 WFAN, 770 WABC, 880 WCBS, 1010 WINS, are also pertty much regulars... as long as you don't mind the static they bring with them.

Between Albany and Rochester on the Thruway. Afternoon (daylight) October 7. 'BZ was there just about every time I checked.
