104-3 Jack FM

Lets see:

Processing: EXACT SAME as Nine FM.

Automation: idk if computers get pissed, but JMK's sure seems mad. Lots of dead air and songs stopping and restarting.

Nine FM: IF that is IF they flip, oldies will most likely be the format. Newsweb ran oldies on WAIT and WCSN and the music sounded pretty good. They seem to have the library and now that there is a void, its probably on its way.

I do not mind Jack FM. I really like what they are playing on there, but did id HAVE to be WJMK? WJMK spent 20 years playing great oldies music. They didn't have to kill it.
______________

Also, killed CBS-FM in New York.

Didn't Winston just sign a new contract? What is the status on Biondi?

Jeremy, how long do you think the had to flip this? Staff did not find out til last min. Too much to lose if this leaked out to widespread. They are taking the risk of engineering failure to the risk of Bonneville flipping 100.3 Jack.

Not IF, matter of WHEN.

I agree. But, it is Infinity's way of "advancing" the oldies format. I guess doing the segue to the 70s and beyond was not an option.
______________

Biondi was just signed too.

Man oh man, good talent in that building.

Brown, Winston, Biondi.

Of 'course flipping 'CKG would just be too much common sense on Infinity's part.

MORONS...MORONS...MORONS!!

Hello, Z. Busy day today? Even though I speculated WJMK might
be a candidate for a hi-JACK-ing a few months ago, the flip today
is a shocker. This was all done to pre-empt the marketplace and
give INFINITY a leg up on the "JACK" bandwagon.

Why `JMK and not `CKG? Because the Infinity honchos all drank
from the same Kool-Aid. What`s in the potion? The noxious notion
that you can`t sell anything to the over 50 demo, your ad dollars are
a waste of resources. It`s not BS, if everyone in power believes it.

It`s now 5:15. For the last two minutes, everything on 104.3 is
inaudible. Good job, guys, that`s a sure way to grab an audience.

Maybe this is the way all Jack's launch, look at NINE. LOL!

I agree 100% on the Kool-Aid drinking sheep method you used. Excellent analagy. I guess WGN and WBBM should begin to prepare to dump formats soon too.

Maybe they can use JACK YOUR BODY, JACK THE GROOVE, JACK ME TIL I SCREAM and DON'T MAKE ME JACK as music beds over there. Wouldn't that be cool? UGHHHHH!

The stupidity of radio never ends.

Of course but (in their eyes):

A) CKG is billing (for now)
B) JMK cost more to run and was billing less.
C) Jack can be run on the cheap.
D) JMK's choices past few years are questionable. They are in the 70's, out of the 70's, back in but the 70s cuts were AC at the end. They changed their slogan and moniker so many times. Bad decisions.
E) Finally it is easier to do this than morph the Oldies format thru the 70s and out of the 60s. The simple point is, one day the 60s would have to be eliminated. The population is aging forward. BUT, radio sees the 70's as the end of pop music because it diversified so much. (not true, but go tell research that)
______________

Pip,

I agree with you on the CKG theory. See lower down on the thread here WHY they would make a choice like this. I can't believe this. Brutal.
______________

Its exact to WKIE. Actually, a bit worse then WKIE. More like WXLC Waukegan without all the swishy noise. Its not that bad (Could be MUCH worse) but its complete s**t compared to how it was before.

You're right about the old audio. It was bangin'

The FMQB article says that the oldies formats at WJMK and New York's WCBS-FM will continue to be streamed online. Makes me wonder if oldies as an HD Radio oldies subchannel is in these stations' futures.

ML II, do we assume all `JMK airstaff has been terminated? Biondi &
Winston are unlikely, but weekenders like Connie Szerszen and Lisa
Greene may be at home with the 80s/90s?

Let`s put aside your problems with NewsWeb Radio Group, should
NINE seek to fill the void of FM-oldies? We know from the fill-in
programming on WCPT before AirAmerica that NewsWeb has a
pretty extensive oldies library?

I wouldn't assume much but with what they like to spend on Jacking and what it costs for them? I'd say too bad, they're gone. What a shame.

If she comes cheap.

I don't have a problem with them, I have a huge problem with the lack of professionalism, execution and manner in which they launched, relaunched, re-relaunched and wrecked a great signal's opportunity. Oldies? Sure, why not? Great dial location. It's a decent biller. I wouldn't look for Biondi or Fred to work for peanuts so I don't know if they'd make the transfer.

As far as having an extensive oldies library, I have about 4100 tracks in mine that are considered oldies, the trick is to having the proper ones when doing an oldies format. I also think that giving air america a shot is probably in Newsweb's head at this point now that NINE will become even less important as 104.3 gobbles up all the 2.0 share possibility LOL.

I believe the best thing to do is a Jammin' Oldies that grows and breathes, a dance format with an emphasis on 90s dance hits and today's product ala KTU or now, an oldies format would make sense but a STABLE ENVIRONMENT WITHIN THE FORMAT, not like 104.3 was doing, it was all over the place in the last year or so. Too much thinking going on over there made them do silly things, now look what all that brainpower got them - JACKED.

Who cares! WJMK will have a 1 share in 6 months! They lost the franchise!

Sounds like deja vu: In Baltimore Steve Rouse signed a 3-year deal to continue his morning show at Infinity's WQSR---which went "JACK" in May. And yes Rouse was pink slipped the same day it flipped[May 4th].

104-3 Jack FM 1st Impressions

Well I will admit it, very surprised to see this format change out of all days on my birthday! So far they do look like they are playing everything. I heard No Doubt and Tone Loc in the last 1/2 hour. Hopefully the variety will be there and it could very well work.

One idea that I will send to them is to take advantage of the 80s Chicago House. That could steal some older GCI, V 103, and Power 92 listeners while protecting its heritage station B 96. Maybe even flashback mixes on the weekend as well. If they decide to program it especially for Chicago, it could be successful. Comments??
