104.9 The Horn Will be No More

Yea, they seems to be indicating other formats, at least 2 are coming.

“Along with our existing Austin station: La Raza 95.1 K236AY-FM/1530 KZNX-AM, these additional frequencies will allow us to serve and embrace the vast and ever-growing multicultural radio audience in Austin.” said Norberto Sanchez, Norsan Media’s CEO.

The format of the station has yet to be released, and the company’s current station: La Raza 95.1 FM/1530 AM will continue to air in Austin. ”

Regional Mexica "La Raza" seems to be their primary brand. I would expect that to land on 104.9 as it is easily the best signal out of 95.1, 104.9, and 105.3. The hint in Lance's article about the other signal will end up with a Spanish CHR would imply their "Latina" brand, which would be confusing if on the Austin FM dial there is a "Latino" and a "Latina". I would imagine that a launch of a new brand so similar would likely incur a C&D.

One of Norsan's other brands is "Z", which interestingly Waterloo is also already using on 107.1.

The real question in my mind though, is what happens with 1530/95.1. Will they acquire both or just the FM and then feed it with KTXX HD? Or are they heading to another buyer which is why they made a deal to acquire the 104.9 and 105.3.

Either way 1530 might not be long for this world.

Acquired for an undisclosed price

No Bucky? How long before 1260s folds? 102.7ESPN with Jeff Ward and Ed Clements is a throwback and more interesting. Kind of feel sad for the Horn. Between 1300the Zone, and ESPN, I afraid its not long for this world?

Any word where Bucky or Hodge will land?

Does that mean Craig Way will be going back to 1300? The Horn is unaffiliated, what national syndicated shows can they bring in? Jim Rome?

Here’s a rundown of Norsan’s existing stations: RADIO - Norsan Media

Curious if they plan further expansion into Texas. Perhaps a future owner of the Estrella Media stations in DFW and Houston? Perhaps they lack the money, but worth keeping an eye on.

Did the staff of the Horn go work with Orangebloods.com, or are doing both? I see Chad Hastings on OrangeBloods Youtube channel and Rod Bavers too.

May have a better shot at picking the bones of whatever is left at KLAT, KFZO, and KFLC after LMN drives all 3 firmly into the earth's core. That is, if they would even be looking to enter HOU or DFW. I would imagine they'd be looking at SA for any future expansion.

Not that the strategy might not change, but Norsan has never been a large market company. If anything, it seems like it might be a smaller company than it used to be. I want to say it bought a handful of stations from Davidson Media, but the only market it would seem to still have from that deal is Greenville/Spartanburg.

Norsan seems to be a scrappy (and I mean that in a good way) upstart operator who prefers LMAs to get established. They may well be buying KTXX and 105.3, but if they leased them for a while I wouldn't be surprised.

You missed my post above, they are buying KTXX

I actually didn't miss it. I too saw the announcement in the trades that they are "acquiring it"... and maybe they in fact are, but so far no paperwork with the FCC has been filed.

They sent out press releases saying they are "acquiring it" but maybe they really meant leasing it.

Zoom back to November 2020 in the link below where Norsan also announced they are "acquiring" KZNX/K236AY. Nearly three years later and no assignment application has ever been filed, yet they are still operating those stations and seemingly doing well enough to add more signals to their local cluster.

They could at least turn off the RDS so it might not confuse some people that still reads the horn. Top message on HD still reads Sports Austin.

I’m curious what text field your radio shows. I know the standard artist/title field hasn’t shown any text on HD1, HD3, or HD4

At home I'm using the old Sangean HDT-1X, Both here and in Lavaca county. My car doesn't show that field though just song title and HD 1 2 3 and call letters.
