BUt RATM and Bob Marley are good

Bob Marley is one of these totally-out-of-the-format artists who somehow are played on these alternative stations. 104.5 isn't the only alternative station that plays Bob Marley. Another one is the Beastie Boys. I think the simple answer with those is, they test well with the people who say they listen to alternative stations.

Both Bob Marley and the Beastie Boys have been played on Alt-Rock radio since the inception of the format in the '80s.

The alternative station in my town (before they flipped) would play Johnny Cash on occasion.

It had to be the cover of NIN's Hurt, RFF gives it a spin now and again..it does show the variety of Alternative stations and for RFF....but with RATM, bands with their views should be banned from Alternative, the people/culture they are supporting and demonstrating for, could care less about their music....same with Bon Jovi and U2, the people they are helping cant stand their music, their main audiance and people who support them are not who they are trying to help....LOL go figure..

they play too much Police. But beyond that, it's a commercial alternative. Juke box.
and doing quite well ratings-wise. Y-100 was hardly a cutting edge alternative station.
About as commercial and pop driven as it gets.

Y100 was very pop-ish before the demise of WDRE Jenkintown but I thought they were better with the addition of DRE's people. Yes commercial alternative( a contradiction in terms?) sucks but its better than commercial Classic or Active to Alternative fans. I've heard Johnny Cash on Phillys actual Alternative/Indie station several times and also on MD's WRNR. It wasn't "Hurt" or "Rusty Cage" either. Johnny was original alternative thanks to Country musics refusal to sign him. RATM- being of both Native American and European heritage I'm torn on it LOL. Beasties- I've been fighting for my right since I was in high school when they first hit the airwaves...I considered them marginally alternative before I knew of the term alternative. Look Philly people just be glad you can even have a watered down Alt station...CC flipped Baltimores only alternative and without HD radio or Internet access we are stuck with ALOT more Creed,Pickleneck,Muddle of Pudd not to mention AC/DC,Metallicker,Van Hagar etc, ad infinitum nauseus, whatever....

remember in 1999 when y100 sounded very popish for a while ???

then in 2000 they started the y loves the 90s weekends

fun times

Creed and Nickelback do not fit the alternative format as has been generally stated in these posts. Plus, they are irrelevant. I agree with an earlier post from SoulCrusher that it is time for 104.5 to become more diverse - it is 2009!!!!

As demonstrated on sites likes itunes and emusic, there is so much great alternative music out there, but somehow it does not wind up on mainstream radio.

104.5 should play more from the following acts:

Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs
Rilo Kiley
Army, Navy
Camera Obscura
Cat Power
The Decemberists
Metric
The Ting Tings
The xx
Fountains of Wayne
The Raveonettes

And more new stuff from:

Fiona Apple
The Cardigans (yes, they have more than 1 great song).

I loved Y100 as much as the next alternative fan and attended the Fez shows. However, it is time to move away from that playlist or you will start to sound like MMR right before grunge music was allowed on that station.

funny you put it that way. I was working the other night and as usual had my MP3 blasting along and the thought hit me: My playlist has become stale with mostly 90s music on it. The reason I loved Y100 and HFS,and DRE when I could get it, was the new music every day. With both my favorite stations being on HD2 or online I don't get exposed to new stuff as much anymore. I really wish Y-Rock was on analog FM fulltime they are MUCH more diverse now than Y100 was. I hate to say it but RFF should 'cheat' and listen to Y-Rock for ideas of a real Alt/Indie station. I don't understand why,in 2009,with new technologies, many more bands and the ease in which to hear them that FM radio has to be dying a nasty slow death. Real DJs perform a labor of love in bringing exciting new material to the listener, why must clueless execs stifle the creativity?

There is something that is supposed to be inherently cutting-edge about the Alternative format. You should be going deeper with your music catalog than other stations. In general, fans of the format listen longer and tend to be a lot more dedicated and loyal.

Radio 104.5 isn't an Alternative station. They're Classic Rock for the under 40 crowd, with liberal doses of slick bubblegum pop (i.e. Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Paramore) to lure in the younger audience. They mostly ignore the '80s, with the exception of the safest titles from the biggest arena rock acts of the era (i.e. Police, U2). I see a heck of a lot of irrelevant lightweights on their playlist, like Fuel, Finger Eleven, and Puddle Of Mudd. They mix in plenty of non-Alternative acts like Stones wannabes The Black Crowes, latter-day Bon Jovi sound-alike Goo Goo Dolls, and dreadful soft-rock dullards The Fray. And in their eyes, there isn't a single song that has become worn out. You name the most played rock song of the last 20 years, and they're playing it as much today as many stations played it 10 years ago - perhaps even more than that. But perhaps most frustrating about the station is what they won't play. I have never heard them play anything from R.E.M.'s first four albums, anything from Depeche Mode other than "People Are People" or the Violator album, anything from Jane's Addiction other than "Jane Says" and "Been Caught Stealing", anything from Blind Melon other than "No Rain", anything from James other than "Laid" ... and the list can go on and on.

Perhaps most baffling about this station is that the music is supposed to be the only hook. Bland station IDs and advertising, repeatedly boasting about how little talk they have (isn't that branding we're more accustomed to from Adult Contemporary stations?), and often little to no DJ presence at the station ... I know for a fact that Cheap Channel runs a few shifts with "Otto Mation" manning the boards.

Radio 104.5 is doing well now, but it won't last. The music will become very stale, and the station will have to evolve in some way. My advice would be to have personalities at the station 24/7 and let them talk (that doesn't mean they need to have a "dude talk" morning show), find a way to become more listener-interactive (how about a Retro Lunch and All-Request Saturday Nights?), and for Pete's sake - open up the playlist a little bit! Why do they think that alternative rock fans want to hear the same songs day in and day out? 20-25 Currents and continuing to work over the early '90s Seattle sound with little else to offer will bore the audience, and it will happen soon. But it's Clone Channel at the helm, so I won't hold my breath for any positive change. They don't have any passion for the format, and they put people in charge that would be more at home programming Top 40 or Hot AC.

very well said Soul Crusher. I'm 45 and I was sick and tired of Classic Rock hits when they were new in the 70s. Same goes for anything played more than twice in a broadcast day whether it be Grunge or Indie. I guess I don't listen to RFF enough to get fed up since I don;t work up that way now.I was home all day yesterday and listened to Y-Rock and heard only ONE song played twice between 8AM and 6PM. And they were all over the map which is the way I like it. Wake UP CC!!!!! and umm.....evolve......

Y-Rock is very well programmed. I recommend it to anyone who's bored with 104.5's play it safe format.

You all should try WSTW-HD-2...great music, jocks, info and more....

I really like graffiti radio, but the HD signal cuts out too much, even though WSTW has a crystal clear signal in Levittown and the surrounding areas, I guess it's true that HD signals don't have a big signal. I've listens online quite a few times, and enjoyed the programming, but I prefer listening to it through the actual radio, I like WSTW HD1 too, it's probably my #1 Top-40 station, I just wish they'd kill kings of leon

For what its worth, WSTW-HD-2 has the best HD signal around, I am in Philly and they are crystal clear... for a smaller tower than the big boys in the Antenna Farm...pound for pound they have a great signal....they seem to be committed to their HD-2, not like most of the Philly signals..

I still do not have an HD radio which is why I listened to Radio1045 and Channel1043. No internet access at work either but at home I listen to Y-Rock,HFS2 and Grafitti Radio online. Way heavy on the Y-rock. I love radio and wish FM was getting more respect as a platform these days. If I were to hit the lotto I'd own a 50 thousand watt MP3 player with live DJs and people could listen for free on FM radios ::) Maybe call it WLSD lol
