105.1

I see GM as having one sole advantage in that they'll be using a proven local talent in Afternoon Drive. Drew Clark will draw a built in audience who will cause people to check out the station.

Really though, they'll have a hard time attracting a big audience without the rights to broadcast any of the local sports teams. I see their cume dropping to the low to mid 2's after the first month. I see an impact of about 1-1.5 points of cume on The Ticket.

Clear Channel is the big winner. WNIC will get a big bump and own the AC market in Detroit.

How long before Clear Channel gives up on WDFN? Pretty bad when your rating, even with local talk ,is the same as an AM sports station that has no local sports talk (1270).

I think they keep it because it's cheap to run and provides them an outlet to clear FSR in a major market.

A key decision point regarding that frequency will come when (if?) Cumulus drops Premiere's talkers. CC will then have to decide whether or not to flip 106.7 to a Talk format, when that station is starting to show some life, or put their two stars on an AM with a mediocre signal.

Currently semi-stunting with "sporty" songs (Eye of the Tiger, All Star, ect.). Imaging is still Today's 105.1, hence why it is a semi-stunt.

"Bye Bye Bye" by N-Sync seems to be the dying song. ("Just another player in your game for two!" ;D)

Before that, they played "Big Shot" by Billy Joel.

We shall see if GREATER MEDIA can pull this off..CBS is a monster in Detroit

I mentioned to a friend that the new logo is full of Honolulu Blue and Silver. Are they going to make a run at the Lions?

Radio One didn't give it enough of a chance in Cincinnati but, they'll attest to the fact that this is a tough format to
do if you don't have any play by play.

R O should have given this a better run. I don't think that they have the staying power to wait and the dry powder to
bid on any of the play by play that may have become available. They could have snagged some college barter stuff, though.

In some ways, it's just easier to hook up with some syndicated music or just voice track a format.

The signal for 100.3 would've hurt their bid for major play-by-play rights. A Class-A 3,100 watt signal isn't gonna cut it. And a couple teams had already re-upped with WLW and Clear Channel until 2017 (the Reds and Xavier Musketeers).

They have two logos that I've seen, the one you mentioned and one in Detroit Tigers colors.

I thought I read WXYT had the flagship rights for the Tigers, Lions, and Red Wings through 2015. Not sure about the Pistons.

If the Tigers make it to the World Series, can 105.1 air it or would the ESPN broadcast be subject to blackout?

Yes, ESPN has the rights to playoff baseball, and no blackouts apply for the postseason. ESPN has its own crew of broadcasters and that's what would appear on any ESPN station.

When the World Series rolls around, ESPN has exclusive rights, so even your local station must carry at least the ESPN commercials. The local broadcasters would be allowed to do their play-by-play ONLY on the flagship station of the Tigers network. All other network stations must carry the ESPN feed. This is known affectionately in the Philly market as the Harry Kalas rule. It came about when revered Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas was tossed aside for network announcers in the 1980, 1983, and 1993 World Series. Eventually, they worked it out to the arrangement I listed above and Harry got to call the games of the 2008 World Series, but only on the flagship WPHT in Philadelphia.

Thanks for that info. I do believe 1090 carried it last year, but I wasn't sure.

If this comes to pass, it would provide 105.1 with the ability to seriously challenge The Ticket in the ratings and may explain, at least in part, why GM was so anxious to get this format established before the MLB Playoffs.
