105.3 sold to Radio One

Urban and/or hip-hop would be the best bet for 105.3 and try to take on Power 98 for real. In know they tried it in the early 2000's with 'Hot 92.7' but the signal just couldn't compete. With 105.3 they might have a fighting chance. Could they do a format swap with 92.7 or 100.9? Possibly, but those 2 signals are much more concentrated on Charlotte than 105.3. As for too many urban-type formats in Charlotte? I highly doubt it. I thought that demographic had been underserved until the last decade. 2 urban/hip-hops, 2 urban AC's and 1 gospel is a perfect compliment for the market. A smooth jazz would be nice, but that's wishful thinking these days.

105.3 to become Urban Mainstream would give POWER 98 some much needed competition. Not only would 105.3 take on POWER 98, but also 107.3 JAMZ out of Greenville, SC.

96.5/98.3 have been running the HD-2 which is a Charlotte version of the "His Radio" network out of WLFJ in Greenville, SC. I believe WLFJ's owners own the translators. They will probably find another HD-2 to rent if Radio One doesn't want to continue.
This explains my difficulty listening to classic country music on the way home when I couldn't hear anything else.

I think this development is a shame because people who speak Spanish don't have a station north or west of Charlotte. Plus before WZTK, this station was shopwing up in Greensboro's ratings.

Where am I going to hear tuba music now? :(

WPEG needs the competition. They're not exactly cutting edge. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. And they sound bad enough when I'm trying to listen to classic country music on 98.1.

There are a lot of potential Urban listeners in the Spartanburg, SC area which is (locally) just served by JAMZ. Back when the ratings were published from out-of-market stations, WPEG and WBAV always showed up in the GSP ratings. I'd imagine most of those listeners were in the Spartanburg area where the signals were better.

Side note, Shawty, I still can't believe Greenville-Spartanburg just has one Urban-based station, especially with those numbers.

Cox Greenville has been getting away with 107.3 JAMZ being the only Urban format in Upstate SC for years, decades?????? That area has a major void for Hip-Hop with 107.3JAMZ being Urban AC and HOT 98.1 being Rhythmic. From what I saw on Radio Locator, WNOW-FM covers a good portion of Upstate SC.

It's been around 20 years, I think. Why nobody challenges them is beyond me. A 10+ share 12+ is ripe for the picking! A Hip Hop station from a competing company could maybe hurt JAMZ a little and likely take Hot 98.1 (at least as a Rhythmic CHR) out entirely. Rhythmic CHR's aren't extremely popular in midsized southern markets; I think Hot does decently because of the Hip Hop void. From my understanding, JAMZ isn't even a good Urban AC.

107.3 Jamz is more of an Urban AC/Urban Mainstream hybrid....almost all R&B. I'd rather hear the R&B than that garbage they call today's hip-hop.

Radio One can't compete with Power 98 (or V101.9), even with a larger signal.

That doesn't mean they won't try. It will be more of the same, while there is a large audience that currently has no radio station to listen to.

Radio One Charlotte will try to create a combo like here in ATL. CBS owns Urban powerhouse V103 here and has and still is #1. The recent ratings have shown Radio One's Urban MAJIC 107.5/97.5 creeping upwards. It'll take a while, but Radio One vs CBS shall be fun to watch just like it has been here in ATL and Washington,DC. Since Radio One couldn't sell off Charlotte, I think they'll invest more than ever in the market. Any ideas on the new station name??? HOT has been used already. The Box? Jamz?

Radio One tends to whip a dead horse, my guess is they'll bring the Hot name back. There may be some changes, since Radio One just fired their long time GM a couple weeks ago, and they haven't had a program director in months. We'll see how it plays out.

I hope Charlotte doesn't become like Atlanta. Kiss 104 & Majic 107.5/97.5 both sound the same, too conservative, boring and lifeless. Hopefully nothing really changes with V101.9, they're not perfect, but they are very progressive and community involved. I am looking forward to Rickey Smiley's morning show....but another garbage station, who cares? I can only take Power 98 in small doses, and while there's some r&b on there I like, it's mainly for the community.

WGIV isn't serious competition. Highest ratings I've seen was a 0.7. They can't compete on a translator or as unfocused and unprofessional as WGIV is run. They've been begging listeners to 'buy your own radio show on WGIV...a chance to brand yourself and grow your business is a once in a lifetime opportunity'. They forgot to mention they don't have any listeners, so nobody will be exposed to your 'brand'.

Agreed. WPEG is one of the worst sounding hip-hop stations I've heard in a market the size of Charlotte.  Of course I've heard much worse but they are usually small market stations.  A mainstream urban station would definitely give WPEG some much needed competition.  Power 98 actually sounded better back when 96.1 was "The Beat" and was competing against them and they played more hip-hop back then vs since they have focused mostly on R&B except during their Friday night mix show.  I know a lot of people who liked hip-hop during its '90s heyday can't stand modern hip-hop, but its still a pretty popular genre.

What the new station should NOT do is try to be a mirror image of Power 98 like Channel 96.1 did with Kiss 95.1. They should lean hip-hop and that would take a huge chunk of Power 98's listeners as R&B fans have two other stations in addition to WPEG they can listen to.

Currently (early moring 8-27) theres construction sounds (saw, hammer, welding, etc)
airing on 105.3 with a loop in english & spanish:
"we're building a brand new radio station on 105.3...Please return at 5 PM today to hear our new format."

I guess the new format will debut later today...can't wait. :D

I have a feeling none of us on this forum will be really thrilled with whatever noise emits from this frequency this afternoon. My prediction, more of the same.

Watch it end up being country or another AC.

We can't have that. Unless it's a classic version of one or the other. We do have classic country on two AM frequencies which are daytime-only for all practical purposes.
