I won't miss Beach Bob, either. KC Carson, Lee Alexander, Bill Love, and Howard Hudson are all great talent that have been in the area for ages. Earth FM is not corporate radio, it's being operated by local people (I think Bob Nations is running the show, and he has been around for ages, as once-owner of WROQ).

Powell, it translates WOLI 910 Spartanburg. Translator is on the same tower. Ted McCall owns it and leases it out.

GA/SCRadio, CraigD is on here some, and could probably say for sure on the Furman Sports. I suspect it would stay, and the Wofford would stay on 910/105.7. I think both colleges are buying the time.

Not sure, but translator's can have original programming like Chuck FM on 97.7 and X98.5. These are leased by Cox (soon to be bought out and presumably re-leased by Summit Media, a bunch of ex-Cox managers which from my understanding do not intend to change programming at this time), but I've read that they are actually owned by Tower Above Media LLC.Don't know about this one.

As I have said before, EARTH is a sign that things are changing in the market, and we should all hope that they suceed! Yes, Non-Corp, Consultant free Radio...Sheeeeeesh, What-a Concept! Also this correction: Bob Nations once owned around 15% of Carolina Broadcasting, that owned WAIM-AM & WCAC-FM(originally). He also held GM, until his ankling, in October of 1986. The FM call letters would change several times, eventually landing as WCKN-FM. The stations were sold to ABS Communications in 1989. I changed the calls to WROQ, Live on the air, in September of 1991.

Chuck and X98.5 are - I'm fairly certain - each relaying a full power FM's HD-2 (or 3) channel, so both Chuck and X are legal translators. Someone can chime as to which FM's HD channel is being "translated" here - I believe 107.3 WJMZ's HD-2 channel is one.

YOU were the One that Changed WCKN's Call Letters to match the Call Letters that were historic (and meant something) to Charlotte, N.C.??????

Yes WROQ call letters were acquired from the former 95Q classic rock station in Charlotte that was home of Murphy in the Morning show. Now known as Kiss 95.1, WNKS, also former home of Ace and TJ. 2 big mistakes in the history of that station, dropping the ROQ calls and losing Ace and TJ. Now competing with Channel 96.1 for hit music format. But WROQ are great call letters for a rock format station and was a good move for Rock 101 in Greenville.

101.1 FM History: When ABS purchased Rock 101, WCKN-FM, we wanted to turn things up a few notches. ABS, (Lee)Abrams, (Ken)Brown, and (Jon)Sinton, were not in the buisness to just float! Though I (still)concider Abrams a brilliant man, he had left the fold, before the purchase;...so, I guess it was just..."B.S.". Both moving "Everything" to Greenville, and changing the Calls, were just two of the items of forwardness. The move put it all on the 3rd floor of the Park Central building on Pleasantburg Drive; now Strayer University. We had applied for the WROQ calls, and the FCC gave us the release, via Certified Letter; (9/91). On The Mike & Scooter Radio Show, we promoted a "Big change"(coming to Rock 101) on Monday morning, coming Thursday morning at 7:25am. A drum roll, and...
I would like to say that we had something going then; both Ratings & Revenue. Today, I, Personally, don't feel that the station is worthy of those calls. Such a pale reflection of correct-ness. We started (12/87) with 3200+ songs. Today, all they offer to the listener is a Short, Shallow, Burnt, Alledgedly Auditorium Tested, Consultant Approved, playlist of 400 or so. I'm not the only one that see it...

Back then, us "Nunbskulls" netted #3 A25-54, 3-tenths of a point behind #2. Back then, us "Numbskulls" billed no less than $237,000 per month. Back the, our Sales staff of "Numbskulls" were transformed into "Order Takers"! All of that due to a full (24/7) Grade-A Air Staff, Monster Promotions, and 3200+ Killer Rock songs. Rock 101 is frequently #3 or better 25-54 now, in a market with several more signals than back in The Day of the Scooter. The problem with 3200 songs is that after the first 400 - 600 - 800 that are universally popular, the next 2000+ are just personal picks from guys like Scooter. And very few people want to be subjected to that.

On this, I agree with Scooter. I listened to WCKN when it was in the Hot Hits format and when it switched to rock and finally when it switched to WROQ. Now, as a die hard WROQ-Charlotte fan, I wasn't thrilled when 95.1 lost those calls at 400 Radio Road but the early version of 101.1 WROQ (still have my bumper sticker, speaking of awesome promotions) was great. I listened then, I don't listen now. In my area, WSMW 98.7 Simon does wonderful with a very large playlist. Yes, it is not rock but people listen precisely because of the music. I get into the GSP radio market about twice a month. The only station I listen to regularly when I am there is the X. It sounds good, fresh, and modern.

I have said it before and I will say it again: Imaging, Quality local airstaff, promotions, and programming to your market. Local stations that do this do well. Two in WNC that come to mind are WKVS in the Catawba Valley or WIFM in Elkin.

Bill Drake on 910/105.7 makes a lot of sense. The show is focused on Spartanburg anyway, and renting time on WOLI ought to cost less. Not sure what else they will put on during the day. I assume the Wofford and Spartanburg HS sports will stay.

AM 910 was the Radio Freq that Bill Drake was original on before Davidson Media Purchase 910 from Entercom Communcation. AM 910 used to be home to WORD Radio before Encom Communcation switch WSPA AM 950 with WORD AM 910 then When Davidson Media Purchase WOLI/WOLT and WSPA AM 910 they had to change the WSPA AM 910 call Letter since it was in the contract when WSPA AM and WSPA FM was purchase from Spartan Radiocasting the owner of WSPA TV/AM/FM at the time. if either station was sold to another company the call letters had to be changed then he was offer to purchase some time on WOLT 103.3 FM so has been on am 950 then am 910 & FM 103.3 and soon back to AM 910/105.7 FM

I Seen in Spartanburg Hearld-Journal Newspaper this morning Where Later this year Earth Broadcasting will be Purchase THE WOLT-FM 103.3 Later this year until then they have a Local Market Agreement with Davidson Media Group.
