I'm not sure how you came to the conclusion that CHR is disappearing. If you look at the format's ratings in markets around the country, you'll see it's doing great.

Contemporary Hits Radio, as a pre-packaged, preservative filled, flavor-enhanced canned product to be slopped onto the airwaves is still chugging along. But the key component of "Contemporary Hits Radio" is the "Contemporary Hits". And those are an endangered species. The days when in any given week there were 40 "hits" that were popular across the nation with most demographics enjoying them are fast drawing to a close.

Check iPod download stats sometime. Back in the olden days when the suits at the record company would pick a song to push as a single off of an album, that song was the one that had a shot at becoming a hit. Now, people can sample snippets of all the songs off an album and decide for themselves which ones they'll buy. How do you determine the "hit" if most of the songs off of a new album have a similar number of downloads.

What about the song from the top local band that has been downloaded from MySpace a few thousand times? Is any local radio station suit going to pay any attention to that?

Finally, remember that "doing great" in the ratings doesn't mean that you're good. It only means that the other stations on the air are even worse.

The other side of the iTunes, etc. coin is that now you DON'T have to have a whole album to get your song out there--just like the old days. You don't have to have one or two good songs/hits and another 8 POS that you charge $9.98 for at Turtle's.

This isn't about being good. You made a statement that CHR is disappearing, which is not the case. And I'll add that "good" is in the eyes of the beholder. I happen to like the sound of CHR radio.

It's been years and years since what you described was true, when top-40 stations appealed to really broad demos. Things have changed with the proliferation of all kinds of music and of radio stations. Today CHR targets young females. But this is not something that's just started happening. It's been that way since the early 70's.

Ok, so I've been listening to The Groove trying to convince myself it really couldn't be that bad in Atlanta. I've heard four songs play so far. Only ONE of those songs were current. I'm about to tune in to Q100 and see what it's like. It's quite sad that after this, I'll be out of options. It sounds less like a rhythmic top 40 than it looks on yes dot com

It's a shame there is no station like http://www.yes.com/#KYLD?chart that can play the hits in that style and fashion. I'd even settle for http://www.yes.com/#KZZP?chart ..

I'm SERIOUSLY hoping that by the time final travel arrangements are made, SOMETHING changes or some sort of miracle happens in Atlanta radio. Either that, or... I don't know. Internet and Mp3 player or doing my own mixes where I can play all the rhythmic hits and electro dance I want are nice sometimes, but sometimes it's nice to turn on the radio and just hear what you like. There's something about radio that's unlike other forms of media or music players, including Satellite radio or HD or out of state internet streams. There's a connection you feel when you know that hundreds of people are also all listening to exactly what you like.... It's not like I'm even asking for anything too out of the ordinary. JUST RHYTHMIC OR RHYTHMIC TOP 40 HITS on the radio! I am thankful, though, for Saturday Night Q. THAT at least is even something where I can actually hear a lot of what I want to hear. It's just funny how so much of the stuff on there SOUNDS underground when in reality, much of the stuff played on there is normal rhythmic material in other places of the U.S.

Yes, I know I used to be "The King" of making jokes about Atl radio, but... it's so funny how that all changes when you know what was once not really your problem will eventually affect you and become part of your life. I'm going to pray hard that something happens between now and the time I get there, whenever that will be, because this is ridiculous. From both a radio and a listener point of view, I must say that the things that have happened over the years there are absurd in regards to Atl hit music.

However, you live somewhere where you ONLY have frisbee, basketball, badminton, golf, female baseball & some female football at night, tug of war, T-Ball, boxing, tennis, table tennis, volley ball, and ping pong. Well, take this analogy and apply it to radio and then you'll understand why this is a big deal to me. Within the time I spent writing this, I've heard "I'll be missing you" by Puff Daddy and Family on BOTH Q100 and The Groove! Oh, and by the way, the Q I'm hearing now sounds like a modern version of the Star*94 I listened to in the 90's! While not all that bad, there should at least be other options for those who don't always want to hear pop rock as every other song!

Or, imagine that the two sports you really love that you personally think are the greatest sports around, and very few people share your enthusiasm. There is nothing wrong with being someone out of his time, someone who would have been happier living in a different era. I went to the yes.com links, and spot checked some of the songs I wasn't familiar with. I did recognize a very few. One thing that most of them had in common was that they weren't very good. Back in the days of yesteryear, the high school kids that Top 40 was created for placed more importance on "new" than on "good". Most kids grew out of that. Not all. Most. In some parts of the country, there are still large enough pockets of such listeners to support a station that plays mostly current, throwaway pop hits that CHR stations are a viable option. Apparently, no one who owns a radio station in Atlanta believes there is a sufficient sized niche to make that a viable format here.

Don't feel bad. When I moved here, I discovered that there is no classic rock station in town. The River, with its truncated "classic hits" format comes close, but still misses the mark. So I feel your pain about wanting to have a radio station that is your particular personal favorite. But for crying out loud, you've been going on and on and on about wanting a CHR station in Atlanta for what seems like forever. It ain't gonna happen. Man-up and accept it and move on.

Here's an idea stop dominating the Atlanta boards with your concerns for the stations here when you live out west. Your constant criticism and ugugestion we should be more like the great hotbed of raio creativity that is Phoenix is boring. Since you stream this station stop being so concerned about it and pick one of the other thousands of stations that are streaming. Then you can spend your day with more productive issues then 500 word essays on the lack of CHR music in a city you do not live in?

Ok I'm beginning to believe you have some skewed, somewhat unrealistic, view of what's going on in CHR nationally because almost everywhere you go on these boards, including Atl, you'll see that people know that the Atlanta style of top 40 (and anything similar) is what's extraordinary, not vice versa. ... unless this is one of those cases where "Atl. is normal and everyone else is crazy".

Also, I think I have a right to speak about station in a place (where I've announce numerous times) that I'm most likely going to be living in again soon. The fact that Atlanta radio may have nothing at all to do with me is no longer the case... And... like I've mentioned, there are times when I do / will not want to have to listen to other forms of media players to hear a traditional rhythmic or top 40 sound.


...And getting back to the "Traditional CHR is unpopular" thing; Lets go ahead and say that today's traditional rhythmic and top 40 (that just happens to be popping up all over the U.S. massively) is a thing of the past and compare it to classic rock. REGARDLESS OF HOW ANYONE PUTS IT, the fact still remains that... something is not right in Atl's top 40 and rhythmic world. Yet, we know based on past experience that a traditional top 40 CAN work in Atl - AND will beat out a non-traditional one, especially when done correctly. I would probably consider accepting that I may be the crazy one - if I didn't go to various parts of the boards (AND EVEN YOUTUBE!!!) and see people saying the exact same things about Atl radio.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but there's an Alabama broadcaster who's faked his way into Montgomery & Selma for years with two full power stations (WKXN, WKXK) and one of several Montgomery-area translators (currently W274BG).

MUCH Better, and based on what I'm hearing right now alone, I can already tell which direction the station is headed a little further down the road (And seldomly am I ever wrong with things like this...). No one really had to change up Friday nights or even provide anything at all to liven up Friday nights, but I knew the station would start becoming more fun, live, and fresh with the right people / person there to make it happen.

The passion can be felt.... even through the smallest details. To those who don't care for the format or the sound, it's no biggie. But for people like me, I am loving it, and it's a sign of things to come.

100% Correct 

Same thing happened to me when the old KPTY Party Station and Newstalk 1010 flipped a while back.

But unfortunately, this is what happens when there's a lack of rhythmic (and even top 40) radio history for about a decade or so, then some genius comes along and thinks "maybe we should put in a Rhythmic AC" expecting native ATL'iens to magically just know those songs they (didn't) grow up with. Adult AC probably would've been smarter... Combine this with the fact that Rhythmic AC as a whole wasn't even successful in the U.S. in the first place! I know at surface level it doesn't make sense that the Rhythmic AC sound wouldn't work or be successful on a national level, but... that's just the way it is. Look at Jazz and Dance... Well, who knows. If Groove does well and operates as a "normal" rhythmic, then when our kids (or native ATL kids growing up today who like the rhythmic pop sound) grow up, they'll be familiar enough with the hits to the point where maybe a Rhythmic AC would be suitable for them in their mid ages..

What's cool about KDM and his family is that they seem to shatter any misconceptions the general public may have about what black folks like to listen to. KDM listens to everything from Modern Rock to Dance, Pop, Retro, R&B, and Hip Hop. Looks like his brother is big on Rock.
At the same time KDM, give Atlantans more credit than you tend to give them. A Rhythmic A/C can work in a market that had sustained a Rhythmic CHR these past few years, or one that plays a lot of mass appeal Rhythmic hits from the past couple of decades that get played out at a lot of the mainstream clubs. Add to that people that grew up on V-103 and Hot 107.9, or all the transplants, and you do see a lot of potential for the format in the ATL. The problem is that Groove's programming was executed rather poorly this past year. It sounds much better now as a recurrent-friendly Rhythmic CHR. In fact, this is what Rhythmic CHR sounded like in Boston and Denver for a long time (to great success I might add). You always bring up L.A., San Francisco, and Phoenix, but there's plenty of other markets out there, and let's face it - Atlanta is vastly different from the West Coast markets.

But yes, true story(ies), and.. amazingly enough, have also been true for some years now. My sister listens to V strictly for the R&B (I assume... or maybe she's one of those "late teen/early 20 somethings I don't listen to the radio" people). I just know she likes R&B. I'm strictly the odd one who listens to odd things like La Kalle or News Talk or KVBE, but my first cd ever was Gin Blossoms..

Really, I don't mean to beat up on Atlanta, but just wanted to focus more light on certain things (hoping the "right person/people" see it and maybe act on it). After all, someone did see opportunity in the recent past and acted on it (which is why Q100 exists). I'm sure I've probably directed more attention towards this situation on the two days I've dedicated to it than all the other months of posts combined. Maybe someone sitting in a room somewhere is thinking "hmmmm...." and something good may happen as a result.... then there would be nothing but praise for B98.5, Q100, and The Groove on these boards... and then maybe 102.5's ratings might go up even higher.

Are they all the same person, and he just comes up with some new thing to spam the board about? Or is it like a succession of village idiots who trade off taking turns from each other.

Caller 10 is not in the same class as the other "village idiots" as his B98 post are supposed to make you laugh with him and not at him. The others sadly are not the same people. There is also the Christmas guy who should be appearing on these boards with in 30 days announcing the countdown is on. AtlantaChristmas is it? There was the GST obsessed guy, Firebird or something like that.
